There are two kinds of sushi: Americanized Sushi, and traditional fish centered sushi. The Americanized Sushi is where you have a sushi covered with all kinds of sauces, flavoring, spices, etc, and rolled into a big rice roll. At this place you will have the opposite. When you order a certain fish, its just the fish wrap with a little bit of rice. Focusing on the original flavor. Example when ordering a spider roll, youre getting a soft shell crab with rice. Not a whole lot of fluff, or excessive flavoring distracting you from the original flavor of the crab. Likewise tuna, salmon, and any other fish. The rolls are smaller here, and the flavor is more simple, but more focused on the actual fish itself. Its smaller rolls of fish-focused rolls and not a giant roll of everything all together you cant tell which is which, or puffed up rolls with a mouthful of cream cheese. So if you want the more traditional and focused taste, eat here. If you want the lavish American style overly sauced in flavored distracted sushi rooll with cream cheese, go elsewhere. For reals. Try some sushi thats just about the fish, not about the fluff. Let your tongue actually taste fish, not sauces.

Freshness: 4 stars Presentation: 3 stars Value: 1 stars Hot House Sake: 5 stars This quaint sushi restaurant on 6th avenue has the feel of a remote sushi bar in rural Japan. A faint buzz of Japanese music plays in the background of an otherwise empty sushi house. Like a fancy french restaurant, the atmosphere is intimate. Unfortunately, also like a fancy french restaurant, their potions are minuscule. After three 8$ rolls (including their most bizarre roll, with pickled cactus), my girlfriend and I were still ravenous. The sushi is high-quality, fresh and prepared traditionally, but when a roll arrives at your table, you have to wonder where the other half of it is. Maybe the chef is taking a portion for himself? Possibly to make up for the pencil-thin sushi, Sushi Tama serves up EXCELLENT house hot sake. By far the best Ive ever had from the house at any sushi restaurant. I will try this place again based on the sake alone. Hopefully they have some rolls on the menu that arent for 18th century, Japanese-sized people.....Ill try to find them! Happy sushi-ing!

This restaurant has been there for 20+ years & I used to go there all the time. After not being there for a few years, we went there a couple weeks ago & wow- the place has really gone down hill... If it wasnt bad enough that the portions shrunk & the prices skyrocketed, there were ants all over the place! We counted 5 of them on my grandsons height chair & 2 on the table during the course of our meal. Then when it came time to pay the bill, she gave us a measly 15% discount. They should have given comped up our meal & begged us to come back when the infestation was remedied. I will have nothing but bad to speak of that place. Aside from the pest problem, the prices are way too high for the caliber of sushi theyre serving- & I KNOW MY SUSHI...

My wife and I have been going to Sushi Tama for almost twenty years now, and I cant remember a single time when we have been unhappy with the experience. We first wandered into Sushi Tama some few months after we were married. My wife, who had recently return to the States after working in Tokyo for eight years nearly burst into tears. The intimate, welcoming atmosphere of this small but homey restaurant so reminded her of the places she had loved in Tokyo that she instantly felt at home. The staff are not just pleasant and efficient, they are truly kind, warm and welcoming. Sit at the bar, drink cold beer, chat with the chef and enjoy the best traditional Japanese sushi you will find in western Washington.

So yummy! I had the "Jyo" which is a mixed plate of nigiri and sushi rolls. It was a big plate, for $18. Comes with salad and soup. They have smaller options if you want individual rolls for less $$. I loaded up with the big combo though, it was a very good price for all you get. They make the rolls and nigiri right in front of you if youre at the "bar", which is fun to watch. The waitress was very polite and attentive. She was surprised that I ate it all... Yep that much food. I highly recommend them.

Being this place is called "Sushi Tama" I expected a decent sushi selection. I generally go for maki and sometimes sashimi. Their maki selection was quite lacking (maybe 10 rolls total) and included about the same rolls you can get anywhere. The rolls themselves were full of lots of rice and not much fish/meat. Service was good and the food was good, despite the above. However, if youre looking for a good sushi place, Id look elsewhere.

Small restaurant with an authentic feel. Friendly, though very busy, small staff. The chef was able to accommodate a celiac diet (completely gluten free) and give recommendations. One downside was the wait from being seated to getting our food was fairly long, maybe over an hour, at 7:30 on a week night with two of us ordering at the bar. The space did not look like it could have accommodated large groups.

I was not impressed with the sushi. I figured with Sushi being part of the name of the restaurant the quality and selection would be greater in that category. When I left the restaurant my clothes smelled like deep fried food. I did not try the other food offered here, so I can not review it. I will not be eating sushi here again and would not recommend it to my friends.

This restaurant is a big disappointment. The Sushi is fresh but the portions are paper thin. Im not sure how they stay in business. Because there are place in Tacoma that have just as fresh Sushi but the portions are much more generous. Maybe they are having money issues or the chef is saving for his retirement! You can get a lot more for your money elsewhere.

I took my Japanese grandmother here for her birthday last month. I, having not eaten out alot in my lifetime, was easily impressed. For my grandma it was a blast from the past. She said "the chef here is a master. His sushi is the best Ive eaten from america or Japan." Im sure shes right. If you dont like the sushi here; you dont like sushi

Ive never liked sushi, and Ive tried it many times, mostly at Trappers, but this was a truly eye opening experience for me. I never knew it could taste so good! The atmosphere is very cozy and beautiful, and the staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. Will be back for much much more!

This is the best sushi in the Seattle Tacoma area. It is a real gem of a find, hidden in North Tacoma. Sushiyasan was trained by the best. The place is clean, friendly, and the fish is always fresh. It is small so the selection can be limited but what they have is absolutely world class!!

You wouldnt really think it from its appearance, but its actually a really great sushi restaurant...really, really well-made sushi, and it is absolutely delicious. The service is fast and very nice, and it definitely has a very authentic feel
