My first experiences of this place were so awesome! I love that you can get a cup of coffee, tea, soup, or dessert. You can also read, bring in a laptop and work, or at certain times listen local artists perform. Sometimes my friends/family and I will bring in a card or board game while we drink some tea or wine, and listen to the artists. It has changed quite a bit in the last few years. They now have a restaurant and the food is decent, although I miss the soups they used to have, the selection is not quite what it used to be. They had a change in staff and for a while I did not want to come back because the experience was not so wonderful. However, I have recently went back and although some staff are definitely better than others, the atmosphere is quite lovely and I would recommend you try it out, you just never know what the experience will be like. Most of the time, it is quite nice... They just need to work on their friendliness and realize that people need a little smile from them once in a while so you feel like you are welcome! All in all, not too bad!

Very impressed. Have eaten at Sakurai, Samurai, Tokyo, and Benihanas. This place is better. They did a birthday song for us that was way above expectations, better than the typical 30 second drum chant. The bento box had the normal stuff plus senbei, asparagus tempura, and a salad with kale mixed in. The $9 dinner teriyaki chicken dang near had a family salad included with a large portion of chicken. The hibachi veggies included a variety of yellow zucchini, red peppers, broccoli, onions, carrots. Way better than the tasteless zucchini and sprouts everyone says no thanks to at other places. We were a group of 12 and they worked hard to accommodate us on a busy night with only 15 minutes notice and the chef was good with the kids of our group! Great night. Be warned, small parking lot but residential streets are empty enough on the block.

We ordered breakfast on a Saturday morning. The food? Okay. We did like the windows and visual things around the room. Had kinda negative experience with the single restroom though. Some woman was using it as her "phone room" so she could talk on her cell. Didnt lock the door and took forever to get out of there. This isnt the restaurants fault other than they should have more than one restroom. Course, maybe they could screen people at the door and keep the loons out. Overall, we put it down as like it and will come back. Friendly kinda place, seems like good options beyond breakfast, and plenty of coffeehouse features for working or studying. Even had a few kids sitting on parents laps, so a step up from Starbucks but a step down from a full service restaurant.

I told my daughter to pick what ever place she wanted to go to for her 21st birthday & she chose Mandolin Sushi & Steak House. I did not think much of this, but it is her day so we went. Well I have to say she could not have chosen a better place! Our Hibachi chef was fantastic! Loved the onion volcano! All the food was fresh & really the best Japanese food I have ever eaten! They went out of their way to make sure everything was wonderful & it was! I have never eaten in this style of restaurant & would never have chosen to do so on my own.(I am a corner booth dweller ;) ) So I owe my daughter a big thank you. My daughter was delighted with the song & drums they performed for her! Have I said how fantastic & wonderful it is?! =) Happy birthday baby girl!

Food was excellent, best General Tso Ive ever had, full sushi bar with authentic chefs hammering out fresh, Killer sushi (WORLDS BETTER THAN TRAPPERS) Owner walks around helping bus tables and doing quality control as well as singing and playing a drum for birthdays. Hibachi chefs were skilled and engaging, throwing a cooking show in front of you. Alternative, more quiet seating available as well. Food also came out incredibly fast even though there was alot of people. Will return! Friendly Fast! Good environment with darker light Authentic tasting Fun Tasty However its not Japanese or Mandolin... Owners are Korean and sing birthday songs in Korean. Still awesome.

I cant deny that the Mandolin Cafe has an amazing atmosphere.... However, the staff are so rude and unfriendly that the cafes atmosphere fails to compensate. For example, the other day I went to the Cafe to do some internet work and little did I know, their internet was down. Unfortunately, I didnt find this information out until after I ordered my drink. I hadnt even touched my coffee when I asked for a refund, as the internet was required for the work I came to do, and the best that the staff rudely offered me was a to-go cup for the drink. Talk about an unsatisfied customer.

I been to pretty much every sushi place in Tacoma area, and a few in federal way and gig harbor, and this place is by far the best place Ive been to! I only tired their sushi, and had to come back the next day for seconds :) It is a clean place, staff is very friendly and food tastes fresh. Its a bit pricier than other places, but I rather pay a couple dollars more and get fresh food and good service, rather than going to a cheap place and get food poisoning. also, meals come with soup and green beans, so I would say that your getting your moneys-worth.

I travel to Tacoma several times per year to visit my daughter & we always go to the Madoline Cafe. I loved going there as the coffee was very good & I just felt very relaxed there. Then last August, I stopped in for a cup of coffee on a Friday nite as I was exhausted from my flight. As I walked to the counter, the most rude man (the owner) not only put his hand on my body to stop me from going in but started to hassle me about paying money for a music performance. I told him I just want a cup of coffee. The owner is a complete jerk.

We go to Mandolin for every special occasion. If you dont make a reservation on a busy night you might wait about 20 minutes. The staff and atmosphere are truly genuine. They even gave us a complementary cake when we told the staff we where there for an anniversary. Eating for rwo, at the entertainment tables with steak and lobster might cost you about $80 but the food is absolutely delicious and we always have more to take home. One of the best hibatchis weve ever been to (and weve been to multiple ones in different states)

Love this place! This place is great for special occasions or if you just want an extra special night with friends or that special someone. Mandolin has both hibachi and sushi. There is a seating area for the hibachi (which you should make reservations for the weekend because this place is pretty popular) but also a section where you can sit if you just want some sushi. Mandolin has become one of my go to places when I want an extra special meal. It is a little pricey but it is definitely worth it.
