An authentic Izakaya. You must try the Kaki Fry! Good sized portions. Affordable. But the Ramen was, although made with decent ingredients, disappointing in terms of soup flavor and small noodle portion. Even that is not normal in Honshu where the owner comes from. Theyve got all the expected standards and are decently done. Service was barely adequate, but they got the job done. Sushi was quite good but the rice was under par and too large. Somewhat amateurish. Well, it is not a top sushi joint after all. It is an Izakaya in its truest form, imperfections and all! Although filled with an interesting but disconnected collection of Japanese travel memorabilia, the mood is somewhat somber and the owner barely communicates unless prodded. I suppose its good that he concentrate on the Sushi, but the front of the house mood is somewhat lackluster. It feels like hes been doing it for 40-50 years, which is probably true.

I very rarely write reviews. But I have to for this place because it is phenomenally good for the price. Where else in Portland are you going to get good Japanese food, prepared in the traditional style? Nowhere, I believe me, Ive tried! The bento is a great deal. If youre very hungry, itll only make one meal, but usually I can have enough leftover for a good snack later. The owner is the only good waitress Ive had, but she probably hires friends who dont have the experience that many other waitresses have in other restaurants. The bento price went from last year, now I think its $13-14. You get at least 3 traditional side dishes, an entree, 2 other med sized sides, and rice. Thats seven things, not mentioning the miso and tea! It is the best traditional Japanese food in the Northwest. Sushi PDX has great deals on sushi rolls. This place is getting a bit pricier for the sashimi. Try the bento.

The decor is very lovely and cute ! The sushi great! Was very disappointed with the wait for my "meat ball curry " it was very bland , had to ask for undon chilly pepper spice and the meatballs were flavorless and tasted possibly swanson dinner microwaved ;( Im a hugeeee curry fan and my fathers chicken katsu curry wasnt much better because of the flavor. They also dont serve Japanese style curry with the pickled red radishes which shocked me when I asked if they had it. The udon my boyfriend was served was bland and had little to no seaweed or onions or seasoning like we are used to. The place looks amazing ... food just wasnt quite so. Maybe their sushi is their forte ? Perhaps Ill try again ... maybe my family and I came in on a off day ??

Great Japanese Cuisine and Sushi find in SW Portland/Beaverton! When we moved away from our favorite Japanese haunt, Sambi was recommended by a coworker who spent a few years living in Japan. She raved about it, so I gave it a try. What a find! The food is wonderful and the staff are so courteous and attentive. The prices are amazing for the quality of food, and the sushi is wonderful. Weve since been back several times and have never been disappointed. Try the soba soups, or the yakisoba with chicken, or just a plate of sushi. I love this restaurant!

From reading the reviews on this place, tonights food must have been a fluke. The sushi was not the quality I was expecting out of a restaurant with 4.5 stars. I frequently have the spider (fried soft-shell crab) roll and it was not as good here as I have had in the past at other sushi places. The menu is a bit difficult to read as it is all text and no photos so its difficult to understand what youre ordering. That being said, this was only about the sushi and I have not sampled anything else here. But I have to say I will not be back.

My family and I have been eating this restaurant for eleven years. The service is outstanding and the food, delicious. In my opinion, the owners serve the freshest, most delicious Japanese cuisine and sushi in the Portland area. I enjoy the quiet, quaint ambiance, the Japanese music playing softly in the background and definitely, the desire of the owners to make each dining experience a special one. I will continue looking forward to the opportunities I have to dine at Sambi.

Just Amazing. This place has the most authentic Japanese food Ive tried in a long time. Ive been here numerous times and they never let me down. Everything Ive tried here is a decent price with amazing quality. From sushi to noodles, I havent had a bad meal yet. Great service too, the last time I went here, the waitress was wearing a real kimono! I highly recommend everyone to try this place at least once to learn what real Japanese food is like.

Great prices (Miso Soup $1.50, 2pc Tuna Nigiri $4, 5pc Shrimp Tempura $6, $4 Cali roll, etc), Great quality, Service is strange and digs are unimpressive. They arent out to impress you with location or cool vibes. Just great food at great prices. You can afford to eat your sushi a once a week here without breaking the bank. Dont like sushi? They have a deep menu - bento boxes, ramen, etc. Try it, you wont be disappointed.

Sushi were great and certainly from the freshest ingredients. As mentioned in other comments, they have some issues with service, but not because they are rude or arrogant. So... If you want perfect service, dont go there. If reasonable service and top quality food do the job, this is probably a place to go. All the cons considered, still five stars

Ate here for the first time today (June 13, 2013), and really loved it. It was a small quiet hole in the wall. The sushi was deliciously fresh, the plating was great, and the service was attentive without being intrusive. It is a bit more expensive than I usually go for, but it was better quality sushi than I usually settle for. Im going back!

Nice little hole in the wall, first thank you for the atmosphere. I am bothered with many Japanese restaurants playing pop music too loud. This is a calm clean authentic spot for simple delicious dishes that take me back to Okinawa. No "flair" just a tasty peaceful meal that takes the stress out of my days. Thanks!!

Service was slow and inattentive. Lukewarm greeting and cold overall. Food quality was good for the price. For a Thursday the place was not busy. Food was delivered without chopsticks or napkins. Had to ask for both. Not a good first impression. Place seemed to be on autopilot, waiting for the day to end!

Good sushi. (Lol) when we arrived to an empty restaurant the only server says "you sit in back". And points to a side room. I respond with "can we sit at the bar, please?" She says "um, no- you sit in back". So my mom and I sat in back. Meh. Weird service, good sushi.

Wonderful. Not at all what youd expect for a little restaurant in a strip mall near an ice rink. The service is attentive and polite, the food is excellent (and I mean excellent, we enjoyed everything, especially the sushi) and the decor is cute. You want to go here.

Like many Japanese places in Portland Sambi is a hole in the wall in a strip mall that doesnt look like much. Unlike many others the food here is fantastic and affordable, everything from the takoyaki to the ramen to the sushi was excellent and served with charm.
