The Schoolhouse is one of our favorite restaurants! The food is fantastic and if you leave hungry, then you have no one to blame but yourself. The fried chicken is the staple and is never a mistake. BUT, if you manage to resist that and order something else, you wont be disappointed. The sides are down-home and just keep coming! I could probably just eat the mashed potatoes and the green beans and be happy. If you can manage a little room after dinner, the fritters are ridiculous. You also cant go wrong with their cobbler (get it a la mode obviously). The atmosphere here is great as well. The Schoolhouse is a bit of a time machine. Youre literally in the old classroom, blackboard and all. You find yourself surrounded by knick-knacks from decades past, including old maps, teaching tools, etc. The blackboard serves as the menu and is written out in that old familiar cursive script that every elementary school teacher seems to have mastered. In addition to all of that, the staff at the Schoolhouse go above and beyond at every turn. I can honestly say that they couldnt be friendlier or more accommodating if they tried. My husband and I had our wedding rehearsal dinner in the upstairs space (the old school stage) and all of our guests loved the food and the experience. We worked closely with Matt at the Schoolhouse and he made the entire planning experience a breeze. I recommend the upstairs space for any kind of private party. If you havent been to the Schoolhouse, do yourself a favor and go (and go hungry). If you have been, Im sure you already know all of the above and are already planning your next trip!

I was really looking forward to this place. My all-time favorite restaurants are historic building, family-style places, so this place seemed perfect. The facilities are very cool. Literally a one-room schoolhouse, the place delivers exactly as described. Menu is written on the chalkboard to boot. Great eclectic restaurant environment. Staff was for the most part very nice- our waitress was a little coarse, especially with the kids. Made us all feel a little uncomfortable. The food was somewhat disappointing. Ill start with the good. The cole slaw, cornbread and homemade dressing was great. The mashed potatoes, exactly as billed, very tasty- but way too smooth for me to think they are actually homemade. The rest of our meal left me disappointed. The much-hyped fried chicken was crispy and hot, and very flat in flavor. The Colonel offers 23 herbs and spices. One or two would have helped here. Tender and juicy, but flavorless. The roast beef was also tender and juicy, but again, had no pop of flavor. Ive had the same tasting roast beef at K&W, and it didnt cost $16. The only meat at our table with any flavor was the ham, which was good, but underwhelming. Im sorry to post such a negative, I REALLY wanted to like this place. I was really hoping this would end up as our go-to Sunday brunch/dinner place, especially when out-of-town guest visit, but it just wasnt there. We will go back, but will experiment with other entrees in a second chance attempt. With the experience we had, and the prices charged, it wont be soon or often.

I really wanted to like this restaurant because of the good reviews. However, our experience was very mixed. The salad was great, the corn fritters are amazing. The rest of the food not so much. We ordered the fried chicken and a special of baked chicken with alfredo pasta. Both meals were barely warm. The chicken with the pasta was dry and almost cold in the center. The fried chicken clearly sat around after being cooked. Not what I call great for two meals costing $15 each. In addition, we were practically pushed through our meal. We were told there were large parties coming and things were going to be very crowded. Wasnt really concerned about it until we were offered take home boxes about 10 minutes after we got our entrees????? We overheard discussions from the staff about available seating and they pointed at our table and said "two places there". This was about the same time we received the take out bags. The check came shortly thereafter with a comment: "No dessert, right" as opposed to "Did you want dessert?" Obviously they wanted us gone. I got the impression that this is a restaurant with a regular crowd and they just simply do not care if new people come in. Well, not to worry, I will not become a regular or even a repeat customer. What a waste of $60.

Twenty dollars per person for fried chicken that even Colonel Sanders would be embarrassed to serve. Overcooked and my party showed up right at five. Green beans, corn and mashed potatoes were all canned (or instant, for the latter), though some added pork products doctored up the beans. Gravy was canned, or at least tasted bad enough that it shouldve been, had anyone actually expended effort making it. The salad was nothing special and they have the gall to sell the mediocre dressing for $5 a bottle, which is fitting for a place that wants to charge $1 each for something as banal as corn fritters. This was something like my sixth or seventh visit over the years and my last. The chicken was never that great, but it was decent, especially for such a poor restaurant town as Cincinnati, albeit overpriced. I can deal with overpriced, if the food is at least good and the portions adequate. Portion size was adequate, but the food woefully inadequate. I also recall there having been more starters than lettuce salad with French dressing and coleslaw that went through a wood pulper. I havent been to the Schoolhouse since the fire and I wonder if the ownership changed, because that would explain why someone dropped the ball so miserably.

Made the trek from Colerain out to the Schoolhouse in Camp Dennison and it was sooo worth it! My boyfriend and I decided to stop in last night for a little dinner date. This place has such a quaint atmosphere and friendly service. We had some questions about the menu and our server, Mary, answered everything we wanted to know and even gave us some suggestions. The taste and the quantity of the food was well worth the price. There was so much southern home cooking to go around. Not only did we get our entrees, but we also got mashed potatoes/gravy, two vegetables, and cornbread with the meal, and even slaw and salad before the meal. They even refill your potatoes, salad, and veggies if you run out and want more. My boyfriend has a big appetite and he left feeling extremely satisfied, even with left overs! One thing I wish we would have gotten was the homemade desserts. They looked so yummy! This place is great for a date or even dinner with the family. They even have a little consignment shop in the back. You MUST check them out! :)

Huge let down. Complementary salad and dressing was basic but perfectly fine. Coleslaw was great, but I question if it was homemade. I say that because the green beans, corn, and mashed potatoes obviously were not. The fried chicken was good, but largely indistinguishable from KFC, which I like on occasion. Fish was fine, but nothing I couldnt do myself at home. The legendary corn fritters were basically hush puppies - sweet fried dough. I liked them, but they were very heavy and couldnt stand to eat more than one, especially on top of every thing else. Cherry cobbler was awful - canned cherries or entirely pre-made. The "Conutry Store": was an amateurish joke. I love the building, but when I want KFC, Ill go to KFC. The did serve gourmet soda, which I wish more places did. But they need serve some actual recipes before I will go back - and thats a shame because I would prefer to patronize local businesses.
