I like this restaurant because it seems authentic. I dont have anything to compare it to except this place on westheimer that was super not authentic. At this place you could tell the food was going to be good becausd everyone seemed to have indian ancestory. While i dont doubt other chefs in learning the complexities of indian cuisine the visual is definitely comforting. Let me do a side note here to say i love india, indians and the culture. So i feel cheated when i walk in to other places and it looks like nothing like india. I orderee the butter chicken, garlic naan and white rice. It was phenomenal. It cost me about 13 $....but i also had ebough food to warm up seconds the next night. Realistically one could probably make this even 3 meals so 13 was definitely fair for the portion i received. The staff seemed busy the day i came however i was served inmediately and my food was prepared in an acceptable amount of time. There were a few large groups there so i was not the center of anyones attention. Pros: Good food Good prices Authentic Cons: I didnt feel the pride from the male staff. Front of house could use some coffee ha!

Living in Houston I never thought I would come across a South Indian Sri Lankan restaurant until I found out about Yaal Tiffins. When we walked in, it was too quiet. We werent sure whether to whisper or not say anything at all. We sat down and ordered some food. They didnt have anything to keep my 19 month old busy like crayons and paper or something! We ordered Kottu roti Mild but it wasnt mild at all. It was a little spicy. It was full of flavor but wish it was mild as they say it would. My husband ordered palak paneer and chicken curry. It was not bad. I think they can do a better job with serving people. Those that were serving did not have a smile in their faces at all. They looked tired and every time one of them came to our table, we didnt hear any words. The TV screen music was too loud. I ordered plain dosai (crepe) to go. When I got home and opened the foil, the dosai did not look like a dosai at all. It was all crumbled up. Overall I was a little disappointed with the service. If you want people to come to your restaurant then please do a better job serving with a smile.

So I found out about this place a few months ago while looking for a Sri Lankan restaurant. After reading the reviews and the menu I decided to give it a try. We drove almost an hour to get there and waited outside until they opened fit dinner hours. The place is small unlike other indian restaurants and the service is modest nothing too fancy. However, the food is the star of this place, the menu is extensive and the staff will go over it answering any questions you may have as it may be a bit confusing. I decided to order the personal buffet which comes with rice, naan, rice pudding and many other samples. Everything was exquisite, tasty and full of flavors. Chicken tikka masala was delicious too. Authentic honestyle cuisine to its best. Their portions are generous and the staff is very attentive. Without a doubt this had become a new favorite restaurant for me and my family. I Wish more people would come, the place is tiny and almost empty and I dont understand why. This restaurant deserves the attention of Houstonians.

I had a bad experience with one of the waiters at Yaal once (to be clear, this had nothing to do with the quality of food). Instead of writing a review about it, I decided to have a chat with some one responsible. When I called them later that day, I could talk to Kumar, the owner of Yaal. Not only did Mr. Kumar apologize for the misbehavior of one of his employees, he asked me to meet with him the next time we were there. When we visited Yaal a few weeks later, I could meet him in person. He talked in length about his passion for food and cooking and I was totally impressed. Now for the food. Yaal is the closest I can get to home made here in Houston which is surprising because Yaal serves Sri Lankan cuisine but I am not from Sri Lanka. The quality of food is very high and I would recommend trying out there sit-in buffets on Saturday and Sunday. Its a really fulfilling experience. Overall highly recommended.

Food was good but we were never offered a second serving of any of the curries or the appetizer. we had to repeatedly ask for items. For eg. they served us a scoop of yogurt rice but no pickle. We had to remind them to give us the pickle. Could see the server serving the next table with multiple servings of appetizer and other items but nothing came our way! Their ladle sizes are so small like an ice-cream scoop. They dont give you more than a scoop of anything and this was supposed to be an unlimited buffet that is served at your table. For the amount of food that was served their buffet is way overpriced. It looked as if they dont want you to eat your moneys worth and they really ration the portion. Not very courteous or hospitable staff. Maybe we should only order a-la-carte here.

Its the closest to Home you can get. The dishes and their flavour , bring back sweet memories of my home . Have been regularly visiting Yaal. Can recommend the Sri Lankan / South Indian banana leaf buffet lunch on Weekends .. Otherwise if you are planning a la carte , then you can check out Koththu varieties like Koththu idiyappam or the Koththu parotta ... paruppu vadai is something that you cannot miss .. I have been in the US for a long time and feel that this is the place where you can get the best paruppu vadai. Their Sri Lankan kathirikkai ( Egg plant) kulambu is also very good. Will recommend Yaal to anyone who wants to experience authentic South Indian / Sri Lankan dishes .. Its a small simple little eatery but with a very big heart !

I am generally not the biggest fan of Indian food. I tend to blow up the bathroom the following day, as the food is very heavy and taxing on the digestive system. But when I went to Yaal Tiffins, my opinions on Indian food completely changed. Their food is very "digestion-friendly" - light, healthy, and not drenched in butter. I always get their dosas. I would recommend you do the same. During their lunch specials, you can eat as many of them as you want. I usually eat like 20. I want to eat some now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Yaal Go Yaal Goooooooooooooooo Yaal Tiffins!

Here for the Sunday sit down buffet and Im not quite ready to move my full belly yet. Simply divine, Allison Cook was so right to include this out of the way gem in her top 100 for this year. The service is perfect, they are necessarily coming to and from all the table all the time but theres no chaos to the scene at all as I had fully expected. The pumpkin curry is a 5 star taste and the manager and staff are all very friendly. I will bring the wifey all the way back out here, probably next Sunday.
