By far THE BEST Japanese Ive tasted in the Mason area! Absolutely love this place. This is how Id rate the items Ive ordered there over my past 3 visits: Miso soup - excellent!! (very flavorful, not too much seaweed). salad - a little simple/plain but still good. You seem to get miso & salad with anything you order. sushi - very good, huuuge variety. tempura - very good (a bit heavy and crispy for tempura breading, but otherwise fine. I really like the taro & sweet potato tempura they give you with the shrimp.) fried rice - yuuummy! hot tea - very good (I usually need sugar with tea, but I liked the taste of their tea so much I didnt even sweeten it). mochi ice cream - EXCELLENT! I tried mochi ice cream at Soho Bistro and hated it... gave it another shot here, and loved it! Glad to see at least this place knows how to do mochi! So the food is great, the price is very reasonable, how about the service? It was a little... much. The servers were extremely attentive, always in the room (its just one dining area), whisking away plates as soon as we finished them and constantly asking if we wanted drink refills. I wont give them any points off for this because the servers are dears, I know they mean well, and fast is great!! Just keep this in mind if youre looking for a quiet, slow-paced, relaxing meal... might not be the right place. Probably better for lunch and take-out. They are kind of on the casual side. Anyway, still love the place and will be back!

Very disappointing experience. Ordered the standard sushi (2 shrimp, 1 california roll) plus 2 pieces of striped bass. Sushi was excellent. We also ordered the fish tempura. Oops! 1. The salad consisted of a few scraps of iceberg lettuce, crisp enough, but lettuce alone is not a salad. This came with a large dollop of hosreadishy dressing. (OK, just too much of it for the lettuce. 2. The tempura was coated in panko breadcrumbs, not the traditional tempura batter. Result was exceptionally large amount of coating relative to fish content, and all of it very greasy. They need to NOT DO THIS. Tempura is tempura. 3. Accompanying the fish were two large slices of thinly sliced potato (1 sweet, 1 white) which WERE coated in a more traditional batter, but like the fish were cooked at too low a temperature and were greasy. My wife had a small amount of seaweed salad instead of the normal salad, and she liked it. The pickled ginger that accompanied the sushi was very good quality, as was the Wasabi. Service was good but a little helter-skelter. We had green tea for me and a soft drink for my wife. Total bill was about $52.00 including tip. I feel this was very high for the quality of the food (sushi excepted). We wont be going back.

Took a co-worker here for lunch, my previous experiences with Kyoto had been satisfactory enough that I went back. I ordered sushi and my co-worker ordered fried rice. We assumed our waitress placed the order together & I was surprised that the fried rice came out before my sushi, but I assumed it was next in line & just waited. During this time our waitress decided it was time to take her own lunch break and proceded to sit down at the bar & eat within my line of sight. When I was finally able to grab the attention of another waitress I learned that the delay was caused because our original waitress forgot to turn in my sushi order. While they quickly filled my order the original waitress never came over to apologize and much to my & my co-workers amazement brought me a bill for the meal. It was the first time Id ever eaten somewhere & had the restaurant make a mistake & not offer some sort of compensation. It was also the first time I have ever felt compelled to not leave a tip. Be warned, if things are taking longer than youd expect its probably because your waitress is too busy eating her own meal to worry about whether or not shes turned in yours.

Simple no frills sushi. I ordered the sushi dinner which came with 12 pieces of nigiri and a special roll. Also came with salad and Miso soup. The Miso had an off taste and the salad was average. The sushi was not as cold as I like it, the slices where a little but thin, and lacked the normal wasabi between the fish and rice but it was fresh enough and tasted fine. The special roll was good and I expect most people would be happy with the selection and taste. Overall I was satisfied - slightly better than average sushi at a fair price. I think most people will like this place and I would come back if someone brought me here but would stick to the rolls instead of the sushi or sashimi.

I have been coming to this restaurant for years and have always had great service. If you dine in you get soup and salad with your meal. They offer a variety of box lunch/ dinners and sushi. I usually get sushi and it is always great food. The restaurant ambiance is okay, it looks slightly outdated but is always clean and kept up with. The food however is incredible. I have never got something I dont like and I have had most of what is on their menu when it comes to sushi. The rolls that they feature are always good I would recommend trying one of these. In addition to the rolls, the sashimi are big pieces and always very fresh. If you like sushi this is a must try.

Kyoto is unique among sushi restaurants. Many sushi places give you a whole lot of rice and a tiny bit of fish in the sushi rolls. Kyoto does the opposite... KYOTO GIVES LOTS OF FISH IN THEIR ROLLS thus making them much more flavorful and a superior value. The atomsphere is relaxed. Dress code is casual, but you sometimes see groups who are dressed up for special occassions. You often see regulars conversing accross tables at Kyoto. The sushi/sashimi arrangement and presentation is fantastic and plates often look like a work of art. It is not uncommon to hear, "Wow, what is that you ordered over there."

Ok, first of all: HOLY CRAP. This place has the BEST SUSHI I have ever had. Now, that being said, I am a serious sushi snob. None of that Kroger sushi for this girl. I discovered this place when I first moved here one year ago and I seriously go at least once every two weeks. My fiance is not a sushi fan, but thats ok because this place has a FANTASTIC menu with tons of other Japanese meals. He likes to get the teriyaki chicken ;) They also have these Bento Boxes that come with tons of food if you want to sample more than just one entree. Just writing this review makes me wanna go eat here!

Kyoto is one of the best places to go for Japanese cuisine. They have a large variety of foods to eat there, but their best food in my opinion is the sushi rolls. Everything in there is completely fresh and there are so many options to choose from, so you dont get tired of eating one identical roll. The fish thats in the rolls are top notch quality, and the taste of each piece makes you feel like youre in one of the best restaurants in the world! The waiting time varies, as the number of people and chefs affect the time. Definitely recommend it for family and friends!
