Well, that would be 2 strikes in a row now. 2 weeks ago it was Woodyards BBQ and I thought there was no possible way we could experience anything that bad again in Kansas City. Well, thanks to Rosedale BBQ, I was sadly mistaken. What the hell is going on in Kansas City?!! How are some of these places still open?!!! That was a terrible experience!!! From the moment we stepped through the door. The logistics of how the food is ordered and distributed was the first problem. We literally waited in a line that didnt move for about 7 mins. So after about a 10-15 minute wait in line, they bring out my plate and it looked like it had some hope. I sit down to dive into my burnt end basket which had sauce mopped all over it. That should have been my first clue to what was about to ensue. Those arent burnt ends!!! Nothing but some pot roast with bbq sauce poured on top. The texture was dry, but not only that, there was absolutely no smoke flavor at all!!! At all!!! Nothing but chunks of meat in some sauce. That is not BBQ! And then to drench the meat in that bland, horrible sauce....I was just very, very dissappointed. But it didnt stop there. Since we are on a BBQ tour trying out as many BBQ joints we can in the KC area, I decided to try the ribs too. What a mistake, because when I opened the box, Ill be dam if they hadnt drenched the ribs in that nasty azz sauce!! I got 5 bones from the long end and the first one you could tell was overdone, but I finished it off. I just so happened to pick up the opposite side of the cut they gave me and what I proceeded to find was unbelievable. How the cook had the nerve to cut that slab up and put that portion of ribs in my box.....he should be fired. I am not exaggerating when I say this, when I picked up the 3 ribs on the end they could have been no bigger than 5/8 inch thick with burned up, dried up meat and some silver skin. I couldnt believe it. So I took my box up to the front and they tried to make it right by giving me a half of chicken and some additional burnt ends (which you know by now I am not a fan of). By this point, I just wanted to leave the place so I took a bite of chicken and that was it for me. Appetite was gone. My two buddies were just as dissappointed as I was. Bottom line, dont waste your time here unless you like bland, smokeless, rubless bbq. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

Before Oklahoma (now Kansas City) Joe, or Q39 even dreamt of daning white suburbanites with its trendy interpretation of Rosedales and the now closed Quicks, white, and Hispanic auto workers and jobbers from the plants nearby would flood these places at lunch. Before BBQ became an art, when it was still just food, Rosedales and Quicks offered the working man a solid, hearty meal for $3 - $4 including a can of generic pop. But that was then. During the nineties and early 2000s, white BBQ struggled in Kansas City. Staple eateries which had been open for 50 years or more struggled and eventually shuttered, while the bohemouth of Gates, and smaller LCs and Bryants, thrived. Truly white BBQ was never intended to be gourmet. If you had told me in 1992 that people would line up and pay $25 for a plate of it, Id if thrown my emty can of RC at you and told you were crazy. The white BBQ places used to complete with who had the cheapest slabs. Quicks and Rosedales often would go down to $7, or even $6 on slow nights. But just 25 years later, Rosedales is still the ONLY original representation of what Smoke Stack, Jack Stack, Q39, and Kansas City Joes tries to be. The extensive menu is highlighted by monster sized ribs and smoked birds. The fries are good too. Steer clear of the beans. At one time a half bird, fries, and an RC cola represented about 75% of their orders. Thats still the best way to go. The sauce is made daily and the freshness creates a natural heat, which makes the spices very, very paletable. Make no mistake, Kansas City style BBQ is black BBQ. Rosedales is really Oklahoma, or Arkansas style. Big and juicy like Texas, but all pork and more heat.

Goal - eat at all the BBQ joints in KC. Theory - if theyve been in business for several years, its so competitive in KC, theyve got to be doing something right. Ive eaten here a handful of times. The last time I was there I had their ribs. I think I got a bad cut of meat. Dont get me wrong they were tender, fell off the bone, but they were super fatty, super greasy. I ordered the corn nuggets, because the gal answered that they were really good, when I asked her what side I should get. These were amazing! Like fried corn soaked in milk and sugar. That may sound bad, but put one in your mouth and youll think, Im not sharing these." The times I went before, back in the 90s, I had sandwiches and it seems to me they were very good, but didnt use as much meat as other BBQ joints. These guys do a lot of lunch business. Lines from both sides, but they move pretty quickly. The decor is plain joint with well worn chairs tables and booths. Im not a huge fan of their sauce, it seems a little thin. Since Ive only been there once recently and I know lots of people who love this place, they deserve another try, so Ill be back, if for nothing other than the corn nuggets. That good!

Have been eating here for years. I always have the chicken dinner, one of my favorites in town, until tonight! My chicken, fries and beans, as well as my partners pulled chicken sandwich were SOOOOO spicy hot, it brought tears to your eyes! this has never been the case before. My partners sandwich also came with a nice long black hair attached. Then we have to mention the counter person, what a gem she was! NOT!!!!! I could have dealt with the rude as hell counter person if the food hadnt been gross. And when my partner took his food up to show her, her response was " yeah, Ill let em know. Me thinks that a good house cleaning of employees might be in order, or maybe seeing a proctologist to have the sticks removed from their asses. That being said, wont EVER go back, and will be leaving this review on every blog I can find. Thanks for the memories Rosedale, cause thats all that is left.

My son requested a trip to Rosedale Barbecue before he left for college. I had never been there before. I will say, for the price it was decent food. The 4 of us ate for about half the price of Q39 just a little down the road. Rosedale is in no way fancy or trendy. Order before you sit down, come pick up your food when they holler from the bar. Bus your own trash. Everyone was friendly and relaxed. Now for the food : the sauce is the feature. Its got an unusual combination of flavors. Also a spicy version, which I did not try as the regular had a kick. The sausage was the best of everything I tried. I got the sliders- 1 with burnt ends (not like any burnt ends Ive ever had) not my fave. 1 with chicken which was very dry & 1 with beef which was passable. I would buy the sauce but I would not go back probably.
