Sunday the 14th was a BAD EXPERIENCE AT GATES This summer we have taken our friends and family for Kansas City BBQ. We love Gates. We have visited Gates at 1325 Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard, Kansas City, MO five times this summer and Mrs. Jamrson has made us feel very welcome and we had a great experience. Sunday the fourteen however was a very different experience at Gates. We went for lunch and Mrs. Jemerson was not there. They were rude and really made it clear they did not want us there. The burnt ends were nothing be fat and inedible. It was terrible. A very bad experience. If we go back I will call first to see if Mrs. Jamerson is there, if she is not working we will go to some other BBQ places we enjoy. Mrs. Jamerson doesnt seem to care that we are white.

Two stars only for the ambiance. The food was overpriced and spicy. The burnt ends on the burnt ends sandwich were too chopped. The classic sauce was super spicy so if you do choose to eat here, ask for the sauce to be held and put the sweet and mild sauce on it at your own discretion. The pit potatoes had a great flavor, but my bowl had about of tablespoon of oil at the bottom. The restrooms were smoke filled from the kitchen. There was just one friendly older lady who worked there; the cashier seemed aloof and was unhelpful. The only thing that would possibly bring me back is the decorations. My next trip to Kansas City, Ill eat somewhere else.

I have always gone to the location on stateline. All of my experiences were unforgettable to say the least. Since I reside in Texas, Gates BBQ is usually one of destinations for great food in Kansas City. I think that the direct contact with customers and employees should be changed. This would at least allow new customers that do not understand the local menu verbage to take time to review the menu. The orders should be taken at the table and not the front counter. A patron that is trying out the restaurant for the first time will always have questions to ask. Why not allow them to enjoy the full experience of great food and great service.

Gates is one of those standards - you go whether its your favorite or not. Im not a huge fan of their original sauce, so I usually hold the sauce and get sweet and mild on the side. If youve never been, go with someone who has. Youll be terrified by the order process. The mixed plate is good, as are any of the sandwiches. The sausage tends to be on the spicy side. The last couple of years have been hard on burnt ends - its a lot of fat and gristle now. Ribs are usually good, but be specific about your sauce (heavy, light, on the side, etc.). Fries are standard cut steak fries, but no seasoning, so grab some extra sauce.

I used to really not like Gates very much, but the last few visits have changed my mind. I still do not care to be yelled at for my order. It is just a little obnoxious, especially when I am standing so far back in line as to not be able to even read the menu, and then be continually yelled out to give my order. I understand the need to stay caught up during busy times, but seriously? Otherwise, folks are always generally friendly and helpful, and the food has improved quite a bit in the last few years.... I still prefer Bryants on Brooklyn though ;)

I didnt like the sauce and Im so sad because I was in town from Texas to see the eclipse and wanted to try Kansas City BBQ. Highly anticipated! But just because the flavor wasnt for me doesnt mean it wasnt a nice experience. When you walk in, traffic is directed depending on if youre staying or going - so smart! Then you have 3 different types of meat and you can do a platter or a sammie. The fries are wedge and potato salad is like home. Theres also 3 different feeling rooms to enjoy the nomz in. A must try!

We had a relatively pleasant experience here. The first thing you notice is the unique decor and the streetcar serving as a bar. The staff behind the counter left a little to be desired as they kept pushing us to buy more food than we wanted or needed and they werent overly friendly. The food was excellent. The ribs were fall off the bone and had the perfect smoky flavor. The ham was tender with a perfect flavor. The sauce is excellent too. The sampler plate was enough for my husband and I to share for lunch.

This restaurant is RACIST! The food was what you would expect but you only got service if you were black. Everyone got extra plates, napkins, pitchers of beer or drink refills instantly brought to the table, and great conversation from the wait staff but (being white) we had to get everything, including our own water refills!! Ran into someone in the parking lot (latino) who had the same experience! If you are anything "non-black" save yourself the neglect and go somewhere your money will be appreciated!!!

The servers are disorganized and unhelpful. Three different people asked me if I wanted a drink, and they kept yelling loudly back to the kitchen about something, but no one got me the side of beans I ordered. Then they ran it through as two separate transactions instead of just adding the beans to the first one, and I had to pay cash because they couldnt get the card scanner to work. The food was nothing special either. Very fatty brisket on store bought buns.

Rude employees, wouldnt listen to orders kept yelling "Can I help you?" while walking away, ignoring me. Food had horrible presentation, sauce was everywhere over bun and fries, and had an extraordinary amount of meat on a bun seemily Jr size. Extremely hard to eat when theres meat hanging four inches off a baby bun. Gates had been recommended and highly anticipated but huge let down! I was dissatisfied, offended and regretful of wasting my money there.

Waited almost 15 minutes for my order despite only having two orders ahead of me. Was asked to repeat my order 3 times while waiting. Finally received my burnt end sandwich. First, its all chopped to bits -- NOT a burnt end anymore--a style I hate-- but worse than that was totally saturated in grease!! Inedible. Will be my last visit to Gates. Saw what they serve for a short end while there -- incredibly skimpy for almost $14.

There is not doubt. I lost weight when I moved from Kansas City. Having a Gates location within walking and biking distance was not a good thing for my thighs. I craved their amazing fish on Fridays and ungodly decadent burnt ends any other time. And each order would *always* include those big, chunky fries and one of their salads. I dont miss the weight I carried, but I do miss those delicious Gates moments.

Best BBQ I have had In years. What else can I say. I have lived in Missouri all my life but had never stopped in before. After eating there I had to look it up to see what other people had to say. So I friend them on face book and looked them up on google and youtube. The place is so good that a musician of the name Tech N9ne wrote a song named "O.G." with it as a central theme.
