Upon first entering, the business is quaint, but the blend of all asian cultures takes away from the truly authentic Japanese feel. Service for lunch seemed rather lacking, as it was (I assume to be) a seat yourself diner. After the drinks were put in we were unsure of wether or not we were supposed to place the orders at the bar or wait for a waitress, as ours seemed to dissappear. When the food arrived, I was a little dissappointed. Everything was incredibly sweet. The rice seemed to be made with sugar, anything supposedly spicy was lacking a kick, and most rolls were covered with brown sauce (teriyake, maybe?) or stuffed full of cream cheese. The hibachi tables are something interesting that Palm Harbor lacks, so it definately gives Yama-Taiyos an edge. I can see this appealing to younger teenage crowds, but mature patrons seeking more flavor may look for something a little more sophisticated.

I was looking for a nice sushi place and figured I would give thus one a try. This is by far the first time in my life when I did not finish all my sushi and did not have any desire to take it home! I am used to fresh and creative sushi. This sushi tasted worse than buffet sushi. A few I put back after trying fearing that it wasnt fresh and that I would get sick. Maybe this place is OK for regular food, but I will not be back here for sushi and I do not recommend this place. Further for the quality that is served, the price is equivalent to top grade sushi. I wouldnt pay more than $2 per roll for what I received. And on top of it all the service is incredibly slow... And I was there on a Sat evening for early dinner before they were packed. 2 tables occupied and super slow! Go elsewhere.

This is the best Sushi in Pinellas County. Ive had Sushi all up and down the Eastern Seaboard and never had better. From the Tuna Tataki to Charashi Bowl - its all good. Go in once a week for a month and watch what happens. They know how to run a Sushi restaurant. The owner escaped from Communism to become an American citizen. He learned his craft the hard way, working his way up the ladder, eventually moving to Florida. He and his wife "Phon" work hard seven days per week to make sure its always great. We are lucky to have them here. Stop in a tell Xai (like "sigh") that Trey sent you - hell hook u up right!

Yama-Taiyo has recently become one of my favorite restaurants in the northern Pinellas county area. Their sushi is always fresh and flavorful! I definitely recommend going for their lunch specials. Their crab rangoon, miso soup, and dynamite rolls are the best! My only two concerns are the service and the tables! Some of the staff are very friendly and a few not so much... The younger waitress has no personality and never greets us in a welcoming manner. Also, the tables have low sides which makes it difficult to sit comfortably, especially for us tall folk.

This used to be one of the best sushi restaurants in Tampa Bay. It got sold a year ago or so. We went to visit it because old habits die hard. What horrible food! My salmon sushi was the worst I ever had priced at premium prices and my husbands Pad Thai was horrible. Even the chicken rice soup for my baby tasted awful. How can they mess up so bad? If you didnt know the ownership changed you wouldnt have understood what happened... Real shame. This used to be one of the greats for the area.

The best sushi place in Pinellas County by far! I have been going here for about 10 years, started going back when they were located where Publix is now. I used to eat here about once a week. I have since relocated, but I look forward to going here every time I return home! The service is amazing and the sushi is even better! The staff is very attentive and polite. I have not been able to find a Sushi place that even begins to compare to this place!

When the sushi chefs in the restaurant dont wear the traditional bandana or white hat, take that as a warning of sub-par sushi will be served. Like one reviewer described, it was "worse than buffet sushi". I would say it is line with buffet sushi, but fresher. If you tend to stay away from sashimi and favor the likes of California rolls, this restaurant is in your favor. The cooked food was okay. Pricey for the quality of food served.

I ate here last night for the second time, The food was good, The service and atmosphere I found a tiny bit lacking, but I like this place, and I will go again. We had a wide assortment of Sushi that our party split between ourselves. It was tasty and a good value for what we got. I recommend that you try it!

Fantastic sushi and food, go there every time I crave this sort of food and would and do recommend it to anyone I meet. Only issue is that the past couple times I have ordered for pick-up the wait time was a tad extraneous but no serious reason to go below 5 stars!

Ive been there several times and brought other people there and we all agree, this is some really great sushi. It is, without a doubt, the best sushi Ive had in Florida. I used to have my favorite sushi place but one stop here and this became my new favorite!

This is the best sushi in the area and the service is always great! My husband and I have been coming here for years, they always recognize our orders over the phone and when we come in they always ask us how our kids are and tell us to bring them next time!
