We came to El Tejas to eat this past weekend, skeptical because of the location, but encouraged by the positive reviews. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted quickly by a tall bearded young man who encouraged us to find a seat and a server would be right over. (It appeared there may have been a staff meal going on at the table in front of the host stand. I dont mind staff eating, but I think it might look better to have them eat out of view of the guests.) After we found a table, we were greeted fairly quickly, given menus, and had our drink order taken. Our server was a redheaded young man, and he was friendly and capable. We needed time with the menu, and he obliged. He didnt offer any help on the menu, and we didnt ask any questions. We ordered, and waited on our food. The food took quite a while to arrive, with our server commenting that he, "had to go back there and make it himself." We ordered the Fajitaladas and the Tacos al Carbon, which although grilled, shouldnt have taken what felt close to half an hour. Ill admit, I didnt time the meal, but it felt longer than expected, for sure. The food did not look appetizing. The beans looked canned, and had a thick skin on top. The rice had very little flavor, and my tacos were mostly cold. The beef had an oily sheen and an odd texture. Everything appeared to have been made well in advance and reheated. I had to force down what I could, as I was very hungry, but the appearance of the food wasnt appealing at all. My friend ate her rice and a couple bites of cheese enchilada, but not much else. Her beans and chicken looked off as well. Aside from the disappointing food, the place doesnt appear complete or put together. The decor is lacking, and although they had original art made (and I enjoyed the odd little gremlins) its scattered throughout the restaurant in odd places and not well highlighted (other than the large piece near the restrooms). The walls are mostly bare, and the place is dimly lit, even in the middle of the day when we arrived. The Restaurant did not exude a feeling of cleanliness. Our server was cool. He was about the only thing we liked about the experience (other than the salsa, which was delicious and spicy). Everything else was disappointing. This place needs to step it up, or they wont last long. There are plenty of better places to get Mexican food, and for what we got, Id have rather gone to Taco Cabana.

Arrived at 6:00 Saturday morning. Promptly greeted by friendly waitress. Could smell the bacon cooking! Ordered coffee & water. Good coffe. Menu is typical breakfast fare for a Mexican Restaurant, and does offer a traditional bacon & eggs option. I ordered the traditional 2 eggs over medium, bacon, grits, and toast. The order came in about 5 minutes. The eggs were spot on over medium, and the bacon (2 pieces) was good cause it was freshly cooked. The toast was thicker than the wimpy stuff, and was toasted just right. The grits, however, is another story altogether. They were awful, being runny and not cooked. At 6:00 a.m., they were obviously thrown together and zapped in the microwave. They had a vinegar twang, too. The waitress was apologetic, and offered to comp the coffee. I have eaten here on two previous occasions, at breakfast and dinner. Both times, the food was good. We did get, however, the flan for dessert, and was somewhat disappointed. We were expecting traditional flan with caramel sauce. The flan came with a sweetish pecan-type sauce, and was nothing like traditional flan. The service at dinner is prompt, but it will take a while to receive the food. Overall, the food is pretty solid, predictible and consistent. Its not meant to be a trendy gourmet place, but does works well for traditional food.

The Molcajete was sub-par. The shrimp were extremely overcooked. The boiling sauce at the bottom of the bowl was overpowering, and it did not taste very good at all. The meats in the bowl had no seasoning/flavoring (sad). This was $29, and I would never order it again. It was enough for 2 hungry or 3 almost hungry people though. In our party of 5, the other 3 people (our kids) enjoyed their "pick 2" tex-mex plates. My wife and I wish we wouldve ordered the Fajitas or the Fajitaladas, but the server looked at me like he didnt know what the Fajitaladas even were when I asked him about them. He had to check with someone else and then told me it was a new menu item. My wife was a restaurant manager, and she told me that she would always hold a full staff meeting to have each person try the new menu item(s) before they rolled it out.

One of my top 5 favorites. This is my 5th visit and it is consistently great! The staff are friendly and not intrusive. The food is surprisingly excellent for the price. I almost dont want to leave a good review because it is so darn hard to find a good yet uncrowded place for breakfast in the morning. However the staff confirmed that there will be another El Tejas opening in Haltom City at the old Oscars on Denton Highway so hopefully I will still get a good table on Sunday mornings.

I ordered a cup of queso that taste just like cheese from a can that they sell at a ballpark. The meat that came out on my nachos was spoiled. I slept it as soon as I picked one up, I tried it thinking it could be ok and it was not. When I told the waiter it was old meat the manager came over and said he tried it and it wasnt old and its whatever. Would not recommend!!!
