I have been going to Clear Springs for over 20 years and this was the worst experience that my family has had. We had a large party and were placed in the back area. That back room was HOT, at least 10-15 degrees hotter than the rest of the building. We asked to turn down the a/c multiple times (different waitresses)and were told "the a/c doesnt work very well in this area" (meaning, we arent going to even TRY to turn it down). we asked multiple times to have the ceiling fans turned up and were told "we are not sure how to turn them up higher, they are all linked together" (meaning, we arent going to turn up the fan speed). They DID put a floor fan at the other end of the room (against the wall) to try to churn up the air a bit (that only helps IF you are near the fan). Our children were so overheated, their faces turned red and they were dripping sweat off their heads. My mother and brothers were both drenched in sweat. our infant daughter was so overheated, my wife took her to the car to get cooled off (in the air conditioning). But, the food was good (as always) so i guess that makes up for it? I guess its my fault since i just didnt get up and walk out, i sat there and took the abuse (like an idiot), thinking my experience WILL get better, even after spending over $100 dollars ? Over 20 years of positive experiences eating there are now GONE forever. I wanted to be civil and understanding so I did write a letter of complaint to their website and was told "SORRY that you had a bad experience" and was told that i should have asked to speak to a manager about my heat problem. I guess the waitresses are not smart enough to pass on my complaint and /or THEY cant try to fix it ? Are they not TRAINED in customer service ? The larger party (next to us) also tried to move to another room (due to the heat) and were told that they cant move them (or put tables together) into the main room. This room (the hot room) was for larger parties. One of their kids ran to the restroom to throw up, but not sure if it was the heat or the food.... probably the heat, the food is always good. DONT even get me started on the how dirty the mens bathroom smelled and all the trash on the floor. Even though the food is fresh and tasty (over the 20+ years that i have gone there), this heat issue affected my extended family and more importantly, MY CHILDREN. I will not return to Clear Springs. The SAFETY of my family is better suited to any of the other local food places just down the street. I am sure that any number of other places will offer to turn down the a/c if we get hot (while eating there).

German immigrants settled Texas mostly coming into the US from the port at New Orleans. In my "hill country" hometown there are two kinds of names, German and Hispanic. Clear Springs, near the Guadalupe and Comal rivers, was the focus of immigration between 1836 and 1845. During this period Texas was a republic, a nation between the United States and Mexico. Most locals spoke some English but most certainly either German or Spanish. The land on which Clear Springs Restaurant now stands was originally surveyed by James Bowie, a hero of the Alamo, in 1825. The restaurant was built in 1873 for storing cotton then transformed later into a community center used for dances, parties, plays, school functions, and political rallies. The historical atmosphere of the structure and memory of the early German community has been preserved. When you mention Clear Springs back home we all understand (1) real country cooking, (2) fried catfish and (3) Lone Star beer. Sure, they have chicken fried steak because every restaurant in Texas has chicken friend steak. In fact, come to think of it, everything is hand breaded, spicy recipe, and fried. If you just must have something else try the blackened catfish or Cajun gumbo or grilled steaks. Order the locals favorite, "Texas Onion Rings" as an appetizer, to go with the first few beers. Pick up a "Lord of the Onion Rings" t-shirt when you stop by.

They said that they would not take reservations for less than 25. We get there with our party of 12 and they say no problem. We get taken to the upstairs and sat separately. Of course we do not want to sit separately so we ask if we can sit downstairs where they have many open tables that could be pushed together to easily accommodate us. We were told that all the tables that were already pushed together were reserved for that time so we could not sit there and that the tables downstairs could not be pushed together if they had different color table clothes because that is what separates sections?? um okay. This is the second time now that this restaurant has severely disappointed us. We were trying to give them a second chance but again...disappointed. When we were done eating and paying the 4 tables that were being saved for reservations had still not been sat and the best part of it all was the exact tables they said they could not push together to sit us was in fact pushed together for a table of 12. My family and the other families that we were with will never come back and will let everyone we know aware of the poor service.

Generally when we go to Clear Spings its awesome however today we went we were excited we didnt have to wait to be seated. Our waiter came and we placed our order, they were busy but not that busy. We had to wait for our food for 30 min. Everyone that came in after us were being served. Our waiter never came to check on us. When our food finally arrived the food my husband ordered was Luke warm, my salad had been sitting for some time the lettuce was warm and the grilled skewered shrimp were were cold limp and had a funny taste. To add insult to the fact our order was left sitting, when my husband comments his etoufee was Luke warm the waiter said no sir I had a new bowl served. I was afraid to eat the shrimp so we paid and did not leave a tip except for an upside down penny (which means bad service).as we walked out the waiter came up behind us and tried to give my husband the penny back said he didnt need it. First of all that was rude second He didnt even know what he had been told being left an upside down penny. Hopefully the next visit we dont have a bad experience, and I certainly hope our service is better.

Love the environment. Servers were great also. The 2 star rating is due to the unwillingness to acomodate my shell fish allergy. I am a big fan of fried cat fish. They advertise that their cat fish is the best. Excited about this so I order the catfish and mention my allergy. They state that they fry it with their shell fish and will not cook it separate. Truly disappointing only place I have ever been to that refused to help me. Though its not recommended I had to try a small piece to satisfy my urge and curiosity of this famous fried catfish. Sad to report it but there was nothing special about the fish or onion rings. Two hours north of here there is a little place that claims to be home of the "Big O". If you want good fish and onion rings head that way.
