Worst Indian Restaurant Ever eaten!!! The reatsurant space is cramped up & couple of booths are there & only 2 people can sit in them. The restroom in this restaurant was more spacious compared to the restaurant space. Shame for the kind of food this restaurant prepares & calls it Indian food & worst customer service.... We ordered Vegetable Biriyani, Naan, Mattar Paneer, Malai Kofta,Onion Kulcha. Only 1 server/cashier, 1 greeter who cannot even speak English- so useless to be in such a position.Cannot answer anything when asked about menu. The one server was doing everything. I guess thats why he didnt even care when we said that we did not the Biriyani & he said thats how we make it here. What a kind of answer for developing business. Usually in any restaurant/Store here in US except this one when a customer says they are not satisfied with an item or product they do charge them & offer to provide a different product. Here they charged us & inspite of us telling that we do not want the Biriyani when they offered to remake it & order something. They brought it back with lots of oil & lots of chilli powder & charged us. The Biriyani rice did not look like it was made from Basmati rice(but apparently it was) as the rice was broken & looked like it was made from a Biriyani paste like the one we get in Indian groceries. Tasteless,Odorless which are not the qualities of a good Biriyani. They have decorations of Moghuls & Biriyani is from the Moghuls... Shame on you guys..... The raita was so sour. I think they must have made it in the morning & left it out for the buffet & brought the same thing back as they did not want to eat themselves & did not want to throw it away & wanted to make money on it. The naan was cold so not so soft ,onion kulcha & mattar paneer were average & malai kofta was below average as kofta did not tast like kofta but like bonda, the gravy wasnt that tasteful.... BTW, the server brought a rice pudding saying that it was on them for the Biriyani issue which was also tasteless & odorless as it was old one too.. We should have stepped out when we saw very less crowd. Never ever are we going to step into this restaurant again... And we would not recommend to anyone this restaurant even if there no Indian restaurant other this one. No wonder that being one of the oldest restaurants (as they claim) in austin , it does not the food critics say that it is the best. Clay pit is far better than this one....

PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE, IF YOU CARE FOR SELF RESPECT AND CLEAN GOOD QUALITY FOOD; THERE IS NO SCARCITY OF GOOD INDIAN PLACES IN AUSTIN. I work as a mental health counselor who stopped by to grab a something to go from Taj Palace. I am writing this review to report how terrible their food was in the buffet today. In addition, its apparent that these kind of Indian owners are what gives us Indians a bad name through not only bad customer service but also disrespectful, lacking any social intelligence. I have been to places with poor customer service but their work was good, food was good, and once you are nice to them and give them a break, they are doing the best they can working around the clock shift. So I am not a frequent complainer or regularly write reviews. However today, the experience was negatively mind blowing; how the owner literally treated me like a child and disgraced/disrespected me. She suggested I buy the buffet to go since everything else would take more than 15 minutes to prepare. After I payed, she handed me a tiny tiny little box with very small compartments; which apparently cant hold much food at all. I am not a big eater and this was very small. I did not want to be rude so I asked if I could get a container without compartments so I can at least put everything separately on top of my rice. She stated "sorry thats all we have because people like to keep things separate". So I continued to go take my food. I could barely put anything in there besides 2-3 things, and that too just a few tablespoons of each. I requested the lady to help me resolve this situation so I dont have to put all different curries in one small compartment. She stated in front of all the other people, "youre not suppose to get all the dishes here in the buffet". She smiled and walked away. I humbly thanked her, took the little I could and left. Respect for others is something you have, it can not be learnt. I will never return to this place and will be sending out a mass email to everyone I know in Austin to never go there. And believe me, I have been in Austin since 1995; I know 100s of people. And there is no lack of good Indian food in Austin.

Taj Palace in my opinion has the best curries in Austin. You choose your meat (or veg) your type of curry and a huge dinner plate will come out to about $10-12 arriving with hot, handmade naan. Personally I have a weakness for lamb, but you can get em with beef, chicken and shrimp as well. They also have delicious samosa, various lassi, desserts and an expansive buffet (which is a good deal but do it early as it sits out during the day). The inside is utterly charming with its funky Indian hole-in-the-wall-ish flair and the TVs always tuned to Bollywood glory or some random guy playing a sitar. And they are open until 11PM (actually they will gladly stay open later if you make it in the door before then) and are right around the corner from the ever-ghetto-fabulous Highland 10 movie theatre. For those who may be skeptical upon arriving that they may get knifed in the parking lot, take heart - it may feel like you are going to be brutally murdered but I have had so many delicious meals here that it is completely worth the risk (also; you wont). The owners and servers are friendly and in my experience, truly lovely folks.

I still cannot believe how ridiculous of an experience I had interacting with the owners of this restaurant. I ordered the plain curry dish and explained about my severe allergy to tree nuts. The woman reassured me there are no nuts in it. She will make sure to emphasize this to the chef and she deals with food allergies all the time. After I started eating my dinner, I began having an allergic reaction, needed my epi-pen, went to the hospital, whole 9 yards. Well, I called them the next day and spoke to the owner. He said he would make a note of it and if it happens more in the future, then he will look into it but that people with food allergies come in all the time and that there must have been "something in the air" that caused me to the have the allergic reaction. "SOMETHING IN THE AIR!" Bottom line, you cannot trust them or their food.

By far the worst Indian buffet Ive been to. Options are very limited. Food was almost over when we went at 1:40 pm. Asked for more chicken tandoori and the batch they made was raw. When we told the lady (I think shes the manager), she gave us excuses saying "they must have just made this one piece," "probably there was another piece on top." She did ask whether we needed another piece-- however a simple apology would have sufficed. The desert section is pathetic as well. Just cantaloupe and no Indian sweets. The desert section was in front of the restrooms and there was a small fly on the fruit! Plus they charge gratuity for a buffet and theres even a tip section thereafter. The only thing I enjoyed is the water (haha) asked for warm water and it was the perfect warm. Save yourselves a trip and look for another place.
