Ok, first off- we were told to make reservations (why- I have NO idea- they were not booked at all) so after we came in, we were ushered to a table and given the menus... after we picked out what we wanted- we were told that they ran out of avocados and shrimp, so there was no guac or "the special"- which was shrimp seviche cocktail.... Uhm... how hard is it to run out to the store to get some avocados?! I can understand about the shrimp, but then dont list it as the special!???? Duh! Anyways- after we RE-picked our dinner, we were brought out the sweet potato soup, which was NOT sweet potato but butternut squash... having just HAD some butternut squash soup for lunch, it tasted and looked exactly the same (plus I know what the two taste and look like, and it was NOT sweet potato) but it was ok, so we ate it anyways (even after I asked the waiter of how sure he was that this was the right soup) OK- So I had the steak- it was good. My friend had the flounder and they served it with a little bowl of what looked like salsa- but it was Habanero salsa that scorched his tongue! He couldnt taste anything for a few minutes! They should have warned him about that! (Its not listed on the menu that it comes with habanero salsa). My husband had the roasted chicken and it was ok (not worth $16 but not terrible tasting, so whatever...). The churros were SOOO super greasy and cold.. .uhm... they are supposed to be HOT? Especially if they were made fresh? Their appetizer chips are greasy too- so much so that we didnt eat but 5 or 6 and then had to quit- they were just nasty.... IN CONCLUSION: The food is OK at best, but for the money they are NOT worth it- VERY overpriced.. and NOT MUCH of an atmosphere... it takes a while to get your food and well- we were not impressed! Wed rather go to Carrburritos (in Chapel Hill/Carboro) for some real Mexican thats NOT going to break the wallet.

I was passing through Durham the other day as was my friend, we decided to meet up for Margaritas and Googled the best Margaritas in Durham and Dos Perros came up. Sounds good. The place is very clean and kind of swanky, the bartender was super nice. Thats about all I can say positive about our visit. We started with a Sangria, it was very dry and very un-sangria like in flavor. Then we order the guacamole, another disappointment, it was very bland and pureed, so bland we questioned whether it was avocado or a powder mix, we asked for pico and immediately threw it in the small portion of guac, saved the day. Then we ordered up Durhams best Margarita....wow! Worst Margarita ever. Pre-made in a jug poured in a high ball glass, it was pretty much sour mix with a salted rim. As nice as the bartender was, his attention to our empty glasses was very slow. To top it off, the background music...elevator. I was so disappointed. Fortunately, my company was great, and we had some laughs. Maybe the food is better but, if you cant get the drinks and guac right, I doubt the food is very authentic.

I did not like their standard "salsa", and they have no traditional salsa as a substitute. I ordered the "Cuban sandwich". This is the farthest thing from a traditional Cuban sandwich I have ever had, not to mention it was not very good. It really bothers me when places put a "Cuban sandwich" on their menu without knowing what one is, and what is should taste like. Its pretty simple people; allow me to break it down for you: Roasted pork, ham, pickle, yellow mustard, swiss cheese, and Cuban bread (or at least something close) If you make a sandwich that has any other ingredients (extra or less), then it is NOT a Cuban, and dont false advertise it as one. At best call it: "The Cuban inspired sandwich that we thought we could make better but in fact couldnt" Sandwich. Even the wikipedia entry has the recipe, why deviate and mess it up? It doesnt make a restaurant hip, cool or cutting edge if they list a traditional product but serve you something else. I will not be returning.

I must be in some sort of parallel universe because I did not have the same experience most of the other customers had at all - except the service was great. The chile rellano I ordered was full of mushy mixed veggies, (why? of all the delicious things you can stuff in a poblano chile, mushy carrots would not be my first choice!), not at all tasty and the black bean sauce was cold. My sons barbacoa: shredded beef in sauce was overcooked and the sauce was too sweet and didnt have a single Mexican note. While I appreciated the freshly fried tortilla chips, they were too greasy, but the salsa was very good. I ws really looking forward to dining at Dod Perros because of the wonderful review it got recently. I LOVE Mexican food having lived both in Mexico and the Southwest for many years, and I was very dissapointed. Sorry.

Atmosphere is cozy and dim at night, so dark you can barely read the menu or see what you are eating. Our waitress was ot particularly charming and she messed up one order, drinks were a nightmare, and food was mediocre. 2 of our party ordered the habanero margarita, which was basically undrinkable due to how spicy it was. Weve had habanero margaritas at other restaurants which had a kick but were still drinkable. Its like the bartender has no taste buds and assumes other people dont either. The guacamole was decent, tortilla chips were ok but nothing to write home about. My shrimp dish (shrimp a la veracruzana I think) was a bit spicier than I expected. Nothing in the description led me to believe it would be so spicy. It also had some weird textures in it, like stuff that sticks to your throat. We wont be going back.

It seems to me that this resturant would do well to reconsider their management as nearly all enjoy the food but the few horrible experiences are over one glaring flaw- the manager. My husband and I arrived to eat lunch and were received with the back of the manager who let us stand for several minutes un-greeted. The other staff seemed friendly enough. The manager Finally showed us in after his bar staff welcomed us from across the entrance.. He said something under his breath as he awkwardly sat us to a table. While we waited for our food to arrive the manager had his lunch in front of the guests-- not sure if that is something normally done-- whatever.. He was obviously moody and inhospitable. Our food was good- hard to enjoy it more once we were already put off.

The experience was quite a letdown... We went there for Sat night dinner and ordered the Mole with Lamb and the Pastor dish. Both were bad. The lamb dish had dry beans and the mole was too bland and liquid, the balance of the ingredients was off, too sweet and not enough spices and hotness; not to mention the density of the mole. We also ordered the cheese appetizer which again showed the lack of flavor, the cheese was liquid and with no taste. To top it all off, the bad service just made the whole experience not worth it, particularly at the prices they charge for these dishes. And the final detail that just tells how mediocre the place was: They served tortillas cold! This fact alone shows the level of detail and attention and the restaurant attitude.
