I had called ahead and asked if, per the website, the two queen room was still $150.00. I was told no, its $160.00. So we went ahead and booked it (and, of course, they charge the full price that day). When we arrived the next week, we walked into a tiny room with one queen size bed. For four adults! We walked back across the street and told him there was a mix-up, we only had one bed. Plus, the room smelled like formaldehyde. I dont know what they cleaned it with, but it was disgusting. He told us we could fix it for the "two bed" price that came out to an additional $45.00. I said hed made a mistake, that wed reserved a two bed room. He asked us if wed read the confirmation email. We didnt have it with us and couldnt recall the details (big mistake...always bring it with you). I have worked in hotels, and my sister is also in the service industry, so she tried to reason with the man. He absolutely refused and stated hed made not mistake. Talk about NO service! Oh, and when my mother and I tried to explain our frustration, and woman came from the back room to ask that we not "both speak to him at the same time." What, he cant handle his own complaints? We found much better (and hardly any more money) accommodations at the cottages in the park itself and turned the keys in. When we got home and looked at the email...it only says "bedroom: queen"...not "one queen" or "two queen beds"...HELLO???? No wonder we werent alerted when wed first seen it. My mother is contesting the charge with her credit card company, and, hopefully with all this ammunition and the spate of bad reviews from others, we will get our money back. Ive never begged people not to stay somewhere, but Im begging you to not stay at this place. ANYWHERE IS BETTER!

Im only giving two stars because of how beautiful Big Sur is, and we got to sit outside. We were in a group of 10 for a wedding weekend..and had some of the worst customer service weve ever gotten. 1. One of our guests ordered a Med Rare filet that came out Well. He sent it back, and decided to go with an easier dish. 2. We were never asked for a second cocktail and all sat with empty glasses. We had to end up going to the bar, and then going to find another waiter to bring ours over. 3. An extra bowl of soup that was never delivered was on our bill. 4. After asking to separate, we were told they didnt do that. So, we just asked for a bill. The soup we never got and the steak that was sent back was still there. It took about 20 minutes for them to get back to us with our new bill, so eventually we had to go up to the front desk to find the manager. 5. I was very disappointed when I realized that the gratuity was automatic on our bio. Why WOULD our server give us great service? He was going to make money either way! I was very unhappy and talked to the manager and expressed how long we had sat, how we had no refills, how we got meals missed. And his only answer was oh, sorry Ill take off the meals. Nothing else was done. And he seemed irritated by us. Very bummed :(

I stayed here recently on a trip down highway 1 and I have to say that this is one of the nicest inns Ive stayed in. We had 5 people in our party and we got the cheapest room available and it fitted us all very comfortably. They were going for the modern cabin look and it worked really well. The washroom was a little small. My fiancee is average size and he had to do a bit of squeezing to manoeuvre around the shower to get stuff. The staff was very helpful, but they did forget the extra bed we needed in the room. When we reminded them, it was ready when we got back from dinner. Their breakfast portions are not small as we happily split a plate of California eggs between myself and my fiancee and it was really delicious. The offers of free coffee refills were very nice. They have a shallow stream nearby where you can relax with your feet in the water an drink beer as well. If you decide you dont want the restaurant for dinner, the Maiden Publick house has a great beer selection and I really recommend the garlic fries. 4.5/5 since google doesnt allow for decimals.

$400 + per night, mid-week, is super overpriced for what you get. I would do a day visit but will never stay here again. Pros Beautiful grounds, friendly staff, great breakfast Cons Forget internet connectivity. I was here mid-week and needed to get some work done but it took me 3 hours to send a large file. Noisy, not private as it appears online. We had rooms on both sides and above us and this place is not very soundproof. Its also right next to the road as are the bedrooms and it was super noisy all night. Water temp continuously changes while showering (hot to freezing). Tile racks in bathroom fell off the wall when I was simply hanging up a towel. No refrigerator in the room. Really, for this price, I expect these things to work. If youre a family with a couple of kids, this might be the place for you. Unfortunately its where I decided to stay for my anniversary and it was anything but romantic.

Restaurant great. Guest house bad. Booked online, 4 days over Thanksgiving 2 months in advance. Called to confirm booking same day. Confirmed two days before trip to find that only 2 days were booked. Spent hours trying to find alternative. Girl on reception was really unhelpful. Eventually manager gave us Monday in a nice room free, found another place for Tuesday and could go back for Wed/Thurs that was paid for. Got to the new room on Wed to find a wooden shed in a parking lot across the highway from the Motel and restaurant. Stank so badly of chemicals/cleaner and the sound of the road was so loud that we couldnt stay there. No other rooms in the area so we had to cut our stay in Big Sur short. If you book here make sure you are not in the parking lot across the road. Restaurant great though. Root beer awesome.

We didnt eat, we just wanted to grab a beer, we walked up the bar and asked would it be alright if we sat on the patio "well, its a little busy, but if I were you I would go drink my beer on the lawn." replied the friendly bartender. So we grabbed our lovely micro-brews and headed for the lawn... I cant begin to say how beautiful the lawn and river vista were. The lawn gently slopes down to the river where one can sit in any one of the giant wooden lawn chairs artfully scattered across the river. The river its self is surrounded by some of the largest trees I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. My brother and I reclined in the meandering afternoon light sipping beer, bare foot in the middle of the river... a perfect memory.
