Waited with 2 children for 1/2 hour while 2 booths sat empty. I asked if we could sit there. "No, those are for groups of 4". There were so many people waiting to sit (in groups of 2 & 3) that the waiting area was full and spilling out into the streets. While waiting we walked through a part of the kitchen to get to the restrooms. Neither the restrooms nor the kitchen looked particularly clean. After we were finally seated in a booth that was too small for me, we discovered there are no childrens menus, and the waitress said they would not prepare a small version of an adult entree. So we left. She had brought our drinks already and i didnt notice that my grandson took his with him when we left, so I feel like I owe them $2.50 or whatever they charge for an ADULT SIZED drink that they brought for my 5 year old. I have no idea if the food is good, but I can safely say, this place is NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY.

I have been going to this diner for over a year. I have nothing but the best service and I am always greeted by smiles and exuberance. I have only had trouble finding a table a couple times but I cant blame a place this good for that. I typically go in 2-3 times a week for breakfast and order a variety of things from the menu. My favorites include the Strawberry and Broad for a solid american diner style breakfast or a Breakfast Club which I was recently turned onto which is delicious. The best part about city diner is it is FAST! FAST! FAST! and the quality of the food is not compromised by this speed. Prices are fair and even better if you come in before 9AM. Give it a shot. I love it and will miss it when I move to California next week. Thanks City Diner for all those great meals. ~Peter

Went one time for breakfast yesterday. Service was excellent, so the staff is a big plus however I can only give them 3 stars because the food is very mediocre. All made exactly to order but with little kitchen knowledge of how to make breakfast attractive. To compare, i can spend 8.95 here for very mediocre country ham, eggs cooked to order nothing special, plain toast, and home fries that are not great or go down the street to the savory grain and spend 10 bucks on a 4 or 5 star quality breakfast of my choice. So great diner hole, but much better out there to choose. Will consider a second try at some point before deciding for good but it wont be for a while.

My brother and I went there yesterday and my brother bit into a pit of hair while eating his breakfast. The waitress was very apologist and threw the food away and requested the cooks make another plate. When we went to the check out line, I told the manger the situation and she just said a noise and she didnt apologize. We paid for our food and left. We was shocked that the manage did not offer to cover his food so I called back and she agreed to give him a credit, but when he went back, she was not pleasant and still never apologized. I work across the street and always enjoyed the food and service. Very disappointing.

Wow! What a gem. I cant believe I have never been here. Every bit of food that came out looked excellent. I had the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits was big and crusty on the outside and fluffy on the I side. The gravy was a bit floury, and could have used a spicier sausage. Other than that everything else was great. The waitresses are friendly, and awesome. The line gets the food out fast and hot. Even the burgers looked delicious! If youre looking to brunch for the food and not the mimosa/bloody special, give this place a try! It was full of old regulars of all ages!

Classic dinner fair with a down-to-earth atmosphere. The cooks, servers, greeters, waitresses and waiters are friendly, welcoming, patient, and overall amazing. The food is delicious and priced right. Everything is cooked perfectly. Be sure to check out the specials, some are truly special. If you have kids, this is a great place to stop prior to the opening of the childrens museum or science museum, both just down the road. Be prepared to wait if you arrive during rush hours-this place gets crowded! Youll see a line out the door...

It was my turn to pick the place for "date night". Instead I thought hey why not have a breakfast date? I looked up breakfast eateries on Google and this place had a pretty nice rating so we decided to try it out. There were a lot of people in there so we did have to wait, but I would give this place 6 stars if I could lol. The service was great, the food even better and it was definitely worth the wait; not to mention the prices were affordable. We cant wait to come again!

I consider myself a well-traveled diner goer and this was by far one, if not the best, diner Ive ever had breakfast at. I had their meats omelette with a biscuit and hash browns. The food was fresh, the omelette was picture and taste-bud perfect and my biscuit was just right. The hash browns were excellent; just the right amount of crunch without the soggy. This was my first experience with RVA sit-down breakfast/brunch and it was amazing! Thanks guys!

The food was phenomenal for such a little diner! You definitely get a full plate of food for a good price. The biscuit was perfectly flaky and full of buttery goodness. Service was okay... Think the waitress was having a bad day. Only reason it wasnt five stars was because the waitresses did get into an argument in front of the diner which to me is unprofessional. Other than that I will be back!

City Diner is one of the great lunch and breakfast haunts. It consistently serves excellent southern food and breakfasts quickly and well-prepared. They serve daily specials as well. The food prices are very reasonable with the daily specials usually not topping $8 per plate. The service is quick and efficient. Expect to wait in line once the weekend breakfast clientele shows up.

I f#%king love this place. From the tattooed, pleasantly snarky yet attentive waitstaff to the cooks that get it all done at a quick pace. This isnt like a 3 am shift at a waffle house with a froggy voiced waitress asking you, " Whatll it be sweehawd?" with a Virginia slim between her lips. This place is good. Even better hungover.

I took an older friend of mine here. She tends to be very picky about things like the way her eggs are cooked. The diner didnt disappoint. The food was perfectly prepared and fast. The menu is offers plenty of diner basics but with a few items for the more adventurous palette. I had the chipped beef and was very pleased.

One of my favorite places to get breakfast. The wait staff is amazing, the food is simple but delicious, and it just has that cozy feel you want to a diner. Also I love their small outdoor patio area you can eat at when the weather is nice. Even though its in the city, it feels like it takes you away from the chaos.

This place is awesome! they are really fast getting people seated and served even when they are SLAMMED, and they are always nice and good at remembering names, totally recommended, food is great! Honestly, one of the few places in richmond i would recommend for consistent good service and bang for your buck
