Akanomi gets a bonus point for its location. Far from where you might reasonably expect to find decent sushi. The freshness and quality of the fish can be hit or miss. The texture is sometimes too soft, likely thanks to the thawing process (virtually all sashimi is frozen at some point during the shipping process - even the high grade tuna only available in Japan). However, the rolls can be interesting and they are beautifully presented. Drinks list is limited with only one Japanese beer (Sapporo) available in 2 sizes. They also have Tsingtao, a nod to the Chinese owners. A handful of sake is also available, including unfiltered nigori. Foodwise, the kani (crab) salad has a perfect mix of flavors and textures. The haru maki (fried spring rolls) is good too - peppery and Chinese like, but still tasty. Edamame, of course, are good - and a big potion for the price. Look for the Tengu up on the wall. In Japan, Tengu is a long nosed god with a red face, but the fun part is in how he came to be. Rural Japanese in south Japan came across a shipwrecked sailor living in the woods. His sun burned face and big European nose made them think he was a god and the legend of Tengu was born. Kampai!

I would highly recommend this new Japanese restaurant, a bit out of the way for people who live downtown, but worth a visit. I live closer to the area and have eaten at many Japanese restaurants in Albany, but this new place is a competitor. Has good-portioned, fresh, a bit less expensive sushi, and a very extensive menu, including approximately15 special rolls. I personally ordered take-out, and tried the Gyoza appetizer (5 for $4, large size in green wrap!), the Rainbow Caviar roll (8 pc. for $10, spicy salmon & avocado inside-out roll topped with 4 kinds of caviar), and the Hawaii roll (8pc. for $6, tuna or salmon and avocado inside-out roll tolled with black and regular sesame seeds with wasabi mayo and sweet chili sauce.) Excellent prices, good food, small restaurant, but friendly staff! I am a Sushi Tei lover, but this is definitely a must try..and I will definitely be revisiting!

4 stars for now, Ive only been there once so I cant give it a definitive 5 stars. Its a hole in the wall sushi place, a tad difficult to spot and definitely out of the way for those without cars. Despite all this, the interior is quite impressive (even the bathroom), and it can only be described as "cozy." Its small inside but the decor on the walls, placement of the seats and tables make it a good date spot. I went with a friend, and ordered something small so I cant say much about their food menu, but its moderately priced. Their sashimi is tasty, and it goes well with their fresh wasabi (per request). I would go there again, but its not someplace for someone with a tight budget to go to often.

My son and I go on our "date" here when daddy is working. Always greeted by warm smiles and welcome back. They remember my son is a vegetarian so no eel sauce on the sweet potato rolls. (Which are by far the best we have ever had.) very accommodating and delightful! We always leave smiling and satisfied. Wonderful food and people. A gem in Guilderland! And a reason to go to Guilderland!

Hands down the freshest sushi you can get in the area. Not only that but the taste is absolutely phenomenal. The staff are extremely attentive, kind and they are always putting true effort into their craft. You wont be getting sushi or sashimi anywhere else once youve dined here, trust me!

Amazing food at a reasonable price. Amazing sushi! Great green tea pot for a dollar! Very small restaurant so if you are eating in try off hours to get a table right away. If not the wait isnt usually more then 15 min. All of the employees are super friendly and very welcoming.

Id never expect to find such good sushi in this location. Its a bit far from downtown Albany, Schenectady, or Troy for some sushi, but totally worth the trip. Ive been here a half a dozen times over the last couple of years and have enjoyed every visit.

This is the best sushi in the capital region. If it wasnt so good, I would keep it a secret and to myself. Environmental is suitable for a date, but I prefer a relaxed lunch or an early dinner before heading elsewhere. Awesome staff.

They can do no wrong. I have had almost all of the specialty rolls at one point in time but the lobster tempura is my favorite. The kani ball is delicious and the service is unmatched. They are fast, curtious and reasonably priced.

This place is the tops in the Capital District. Sushi made the traditional way, not American Chinese goop. Try their kitchen, for cooked diners. Japanese food doesnt have to be raw fish, leave that for me!

A small, cozy Japanese restaurant with good sushi and attentative staff. The fresh wasabi was amazing, it was the first time I hate grated fresh wasabi, having only wasabi paste in the past.
