The main complaint that you hear about Market Street is that they are over-priced. News flash: This is a seafood restaurant in SLC, UT...a land locked state. The fish is flown in daily by Delta airlines from around the world. Not exactly the cheapest way to acquire seafood. Its not going to be as cheap as coastal cities, obviously. Then, in the same breath, people complain that some of the fish is frozen. First of all, fish like salmon and halibut are fresh wild while in season, then they have to be frozen because they cant be fished year-round. Second, its the fish that are wild that are truly high priced. If thats a problem for you then dont eat seafood. Wild fish is more and more rare every year, and their prices continue to go up. Market St. just reflects that reality. Think the crab legs are expensive now? Check back in a year. The fishing quota for next year got cut in half. So while the legs went up around 60% in price this year, they will rise even more next year. That is the world we live in. The oceans are being ravaged. All we are left with is crummy farm raised fish which is horrible for you. The prices are not ever going down for wild seafood. And if you want cheap seafood, go to Red Lobster or Joes Crab Shack. If you want higher quality seafood at a higher price, then go to Market Street. Get the crab legs, the ahi tuna, or something that is fresh wild. Dont get the cheapest thing on the menu and you wont be disappointed. There are people on this site complaining about their bill being $20 a plate! If thats your attitude, go to Red Lobster, Market Street will certainly be a let down if you order the "Daily Specials". They are all frozen and sub-par. You can get that stuff anywhere. By the way, the steaks at Market Street are all Certified Angus Beef. Top of the line. As opposed to Ruths Chris where youll be paying the same price for a steak, a la carte, you get two sides and a chowder or salad at M.S. But, while the chowder does taste quite good, its pretty low on the clams. Its more of a potato soup with the occasional accidental clam. Bottom line, Market Street Grill is somewhat expensive to get anything worthwhile. And if you are a real diner then you may find the food simple and lacking creativity. But you must understand that this is a seafood restaurant that seeks to serve the masses of Utah, who are not exactly known for their adventurism regarding food. If you get the right thing, its high quality food served in a simple manner. Doesnt sound like your thing? Go to the New Yorker downstairs in the same building. That is fine dining. The Market Street Grill is casual dining at a slightly higher price.

Yesterday afternoon, my wife, a friend and I were walking down Market Street returning to our car. On our right was the construction zone for the new courthouse. As we were walking, I noticed a broken construction barrier laying across the sidewalk, serving no purpose whatsoever. After stating to my companions that someone could trip over it, I tossed it over the fence, into the deserted construction area. Just then, our friend realized she had forgotten her credit card at a restaurant. My wife and I waited for her to retrieve it. It was slightly cold, so we decided to walk across the street and have a drink at Market Street Grill. Once inside, we were greeted by the hostess and the manager, Robert. When I asked if we could sit in a bar area, he immediately refused to sell us alcohol. After my initial confusion as to what caused his rude behavior, he stated that "Im not serving you alcohol while you throw cones over the fence." I tried to remedy the situation by calmly explaining that we were just stopping in. He still refused, and continued to be extremely rude. Despite living in one of the most conservative states for all of my life, surprisingly, I have never really personally been treated with such judgment, prejudice and disrespect -- until yesterday. Frankly, it is the most offensive affront that I have ever experienced, and it upset my wife and me for the rest of the evening. For this poor excuse of a customer service representative, Robert, to leap to such a ridiculous conclusion about a glimpse of something he observed on the street is appalling. Furthermore, for the sake of Gastronomys business, I hope Robert treats other patrons more rationally. Despite Market Streets success and distinguished reputation, his elitist and irrational conduct is despicable. I will never set foot in any Gastronomy establishment again. UPDATE: After almost 6 months, and after attempting to call, email, and contact "Steve," I was never able to contact anyone from Market Street administration to explain the situation, or resolve this in any manner. The only outlet they decided to contact me through was various review sites, where they could defend their image without having to actually speak with me. Talk about "customer service".

I wonder what people expect from Market Street. You see the people below complain about the price. Do they understand that fresh wild seafood is a finite product? The price is determined by quotas that have nothing to do with Market Street. And fresh wild product is more in Utah than in places by the coast because...those places are by the coast. Why is this confusing? What is the transportation cost to fly fish in daily vs driving it from the coast to a nearby restaurant? Dont complain people, appreciate. As for those that tell you that the food is not dressed up enough, that is true for many. It is high quality food served simply for the masses. There are no fancy sauces or complicated serving styles. Its all pretty basic. But the food is high quality and as good as it gets for seafood in slc. For fine dining, visit the New Yorker below Market Street. As for the service, its the same as any place-some servers are great, others are not. Dont say that the service in Market Street is poor simply because you had a bad server. They do a good job of weeding out those servers who are problems so its likely youll never see them again. For entrees, get the Ahi Tuna, the Halibut Oscar, the crab cakes, the Filet (oscar), the Bone in Ribeye, the Sea Bass (when they have it), Wild Salmon (when fresh), cedar plank salmon, or the Dungenesse Crab Louie for a salad. For appetizers, get the mussels, oysters, stuffed mushrooms, or the crab cakes. For dessert, the Sabayon, Raspberry Almond Tort, or the Strawberry Shortcake.

We were traveling through town and decided to give the resturaunt a try. We were looking for a nice reasturant since it was our 37th anniversary. I ordered the 6 oz faletmeigon and lobster tail 78.00 and my husband ordered the New York Steak 50.00 we had the oyster sample platter and calamari. Our total bill for dinner was 175.00 that included two drinks. This is not a complaint about the price we expected it because we have eaten at other steak houses before. First off the atmasphore was disappointing for a upscale resturaunt I thought it gave off a diner feel to it. My lobster tail was tuff and my steak was tuff what are the odds of that happening : / I have had steak and lobster at a food chain resturaunt before and it was better. I only took two bites of my steak. I knew when my husband did not finish his meal including the steak he was thinking the samething I was. He ordered the clam chowder I ordered the garden salad. When the salad came it was iceberg lettuce 2 slices of cucumber and two cherry tomatoes. Ice berg lettuce I thought only diners serve ice berg lettuce. I could go on but i think you know by now we would not recommend this resturaunt to anyone it was that terrible. I have never been to Salt Lake City before and I do not know the quality of restaurant you have around town but for this resturaunt to serve the quality of food we ate last night where we live they would be out of business It was very disappointing.
