I used to get giddy when I knew I had something to do at the Gaylord, because of this place! In the past a couple of times I spent $20 just to park and go to eat their soup and Guac and chips. The soup was so good I spent years figuring out how to recreate it. Rich and flavorful chicken stock poured over a half of an ear of corn, chicken, avocado, potatoes, & tomatoes! The table side guac was made to your tastes and was always fabulous and they had a top shelf margarita so good it made you want another one!! So imagine my delight when I have another occasion to be at the Gaylord!! It had been a couple of years, so I was PUMPED! Well, changes have occurred. New head chef = new menu. No more of my precious soup. No more table side guac. No more incredible margarita. I decided I would give the new menu a chance. Basically, I could have had the same outcome if I threw $35 in the trash. I ordered the tortilla soup and paid the upcharge for the added pulled chicken. It tasted like enchilda sauce that housed two small pieces of avocado, one chunk and three shreds of chicken...and all of that thick enchilada sauce, instead of broth. Blech. My margarita was a skinny margarita, but for some reason was carbonated. ? Carbonated. Yes, I said the $13 margarita was carbonated. And finally, the guac. There was no amount of salt and lime to dress up that mess. What they did to those avocados was a shame and it was obvious the quality of fruit with which they started was poor. Never again will I recommend this place. I blush with embarrassment thinking of how many people Ive told to go here when I heard that someone was going to the Gaylord. Never again.

The setting is nice & open along the riverwalk in the Gaylord Texan Resort. Lots of great views, but noisy as you would expect under the Atrium. I ordered the Halibut off the days menu, but they did not have it, so I had the Ribeye steak. It was very good steak, very tender. It came with potato fingers, but I asked to substitute for roasted new potatoes. The waitress said that would be done, but it came with very thinly sliced finger potatoes, buried under the steak. Did the chef think I wouldnt notice, or did my request get lost in translation? I did ask for a small side salad, which was included at no extra cost. But then, I would expect so with a $36 price tag! Because of the inconvenience with the menu, I was offered a free desert, a slice of 3 layer slice cake with whipped cream between & a hint of strawberry with the cream on top. I would have loved it if it had included some nice slices of strawberries, in a suitable amount. The staff was courteous & tried to be helpful, but I struggled with the Spanish accent. I confess that I felt more like I was in Mexico than in the US. Although the staff was pleasant, they seemed to expect me to understand their language, weaving Spanish words with English, then translating only if asked. Overall a good meal, but definitely not worth the price tag!

To start with I ordered the bland soup with bleached out dry chicken that was not only tough to chew it, there was a VERY small amount of it. Add to that one small over ripe avacado sliver, then Non cooked freezer burn corn cob slices. That was my soup. My wifes nachos seemed to be a good deal. My sons 10 shrimp was nearly 20 Bucks! the rice was hard and undercooked. My son in law and daughter ordered the Fajita plates for nearly 22 dollars, about 12 dollars higher than most mexican places for the quality and amount of food they got. My other daughter ordered a salad, one type of lettuce and 2 toppings with salad dressing, hardly worth the 13 bucks I paid. My wifes red wine was about $7 per half glass, thats roughly double. Then to top it off Brian (Great server) got a MANDATORY $27 tip! 27 BUCKS? Then they had the GALL to ask for another tip on the receipt slip! We were there for @35 minutes before we left in regret. So The Riverwalk Cantina Expects wait staff to make @$50 per hour? Brian did a great Job, but I needed a shoe shine or something to offset that cost! The 10 ish grand the Riverwalk Cantina spent on the Christmas light show was enjoyable, I should have walked around for free and tried the steak house maybe. The Riverwalk Cantina is a 2 star restaurant in a 4 star loacation.

Gave it a one star only because it wouldnt let me give no stars. The menu was way over priced. The quality of the food was horrible. Not mexican food at all. I eat better at taco bell. Not that taco bell is mexican either. Our waiter was a good guy. No complaints there. But the girl that showed us to our table ( Margaret ) not so nice. We asked for a table and she led us to one. But seeing where she wanted to seat us, we asked if we could sit next to the little river. She immediately made a disapproving face and rolled her eyes. She sat us next the little river. Then, I could see that when she got back to the other girls at the front kiosk, she started talking to them about us. Probably not anything good either because they all started turning around to look at us. You know what? If you dont like your job or cant do it right, thats not my fault. Find a job where you dont have to talk or deal with people. It bothered me the whole time I was there trying to eat. We paid close $150 and I was very very unsatisfied. I will not recommend this place to anyone, nor will I ever return.

Texas Burrito: 3 out of 5 burps: So I guess we can mark off the Riverwalk Cantina as being anything Id like to enjoy again. While the food isnt terrible, its just not what I expected. There were two versions of this, one with beef and the other with chicken. I got the chicken version since thats what I enjoy. However after tasting Jessies Kobe beef fajitas, I feel that I should have gone that route instead. Again, Im not one for beef but that Kobe stuff was good! The beans were pretty good which was really the only thing that I enjoyed on my plate. The chicken wasnt all that great. Seemed that the chickens flavor came from everything that was wrapped in the burrito instead of whatever it was cooked with and the rice was just blah. I miss the real San Antonio...

Waited an hour to be seated. Wasnt told it was a buffet until we were seated. Neither of us wanted a buffet, but the Gaylord was extremely busy and anywhere else would have us waiting too, so we went with it. Despite the long wait there were empty tables everywhere, and this is at a buffet. All the waiters and waitresses were doing as getting drinks, and standing around talking. The food was fine, but I didnt each much since I wasnt that hungry. Ive never been to a nicer restaurant that was buffet only for dinner. Normally its buffet, or the menu. Upon receiving the bill, I was welcomed to a nice automatic gratuity for a party of two. Why should I tip 18% for someone who brought my guest and I two glasses of water? Ridiculous. No need to go back here.
