YUZEN burst over my head like a revelation. I was driving north on 101, returning home to Seattle from a vacation that had taken me to and through the Humboldt County, California, redwoods and looked to my right, to see one of the weirdest combination of images of my entire trip: a giant Japanese man clad in some sort of gear (samurai?), holding out a bowl and grinning furiously, standing in front of what looked to me like a somewhat down-at-the-heels Bavarian-style building. Well. I set up my tent at the Seal Rock RV campground just down the road, and walked back to this odd-looking place to eat. At the time I felt that I had never eaten better food in my entire life. I thought later that maybe Id just arrived at that conclusion because Id been eating food prepared in the back seat of my car, taken from a cooler, for the week prior. So Ive gone back twice since then and, yes, it really IS great food. What made it particularly interesting the first time was that the person in charge of greeting people seemed to feel that disaster impended at every moment. I was seated near the cash register and heard her delivering dire predictions of doom to the wait staff repeatedly through the entire time that I feasted and gloried in the tastes and textures and balance of the meal, and the courteous service. Doom was averted! Everything from the tea through the soup and the teriyaki and the fruit was exquisite. I LOVE the place. I hope it never changes, right down to the weirdness of the exterior.

If you are a fan of sushi, look no further. The chef prepares variations to suit every taste. Not a fan of sushi? No problem. A varied menu of mouthwatering dishes awaits you. Though the building looks a bit incongruous at first, with a two-story full-color sushi chef image on what is obviously an Old World European style building, it makes sense when you know that the original business was a Bavarian restaurant. Yes, the stained glass windows each still hold the coat-of-arms of a Bavarian city. Nevertheless, Yuzen is 100% authentic Japanese sushi and cuisine! With an exceptional staff, reasonable prices, a good selection of Japanese beers and saki you will not be disappointed. This is our "go to" restaurant for Japanese food on the coast.

Well, we bought about $45 worth of sushi and left hungry. The nigiri was fine, but the maki (rolls) were the meagerest Ive ever seen, and really poorly cut- even with very little filling, they were falling apart. For $7.50- $8.00 per roll, pretty disappointing. Maybe we caught them on an "off" night? Or maybe its better not to order off the maki menu. Also, we waited for over 45 minutes for the sushi even though there was only one other couple in the whole place. That couples food looked alright though (they ordered the volcano roll). Probably wont try again.

Best Japanese cuisine, even better than what Ive had in Japan. Service is slow, but the food is worth almost any trouble. In over 16 years eating at least 12 meals a year, never a single disappointing meal. We drive over 3 hrs. round-trip each time we eat there, as we live in Corvallis, OR & drive over just to eat, even though we have several local Japanese resturants to chose from. Its our favorite resturant regardless of type. Do yourself a favor & give it a try!

The building and atmosphere were pretty cool. The food was tasteless and some of the worst sushi ever. The fish was not fresh and neither was the rice. But then again, its the only place in Seal Rock open past 7pm on a Saturday and the Oregon coast is known for having mediocre restaurants and food. Perhaps I have been ruined by living in a town that has great sushi and is known for fresh food and wonderful eateries.

Food was absolutely exceptional and the service is godawful. At the level of "Oh, I FORGOT about you," on a midweek mid-afternoon with almost no one there, and I dont mean slow just once, I mean chronically slow. Slow, slow, slow, every time Ive been there. But I have to give it five stars anyway because the food is just that good.
