I took my family to Family Secrets on the recommendation from a friend and based on online reviews. It was a decent soul food restaurant, not the best I’ve had, but also not the worst. My wife and I ordered the Wings & Fish combo, recommended by our waitress because that’s what they are known for. For a place named “Family” Secrets, there were not many children’s selections, only chicken tenders and shrimp. We ordered our food and received our cornbread and rolls first, which was nice, although I would have preferred to have it to eat with my meal as well. Approximately 20-25 minutes later, the entrees were brought out. I had 3 large fried chicken wings (2 dipped in buffalo sauce), 2 pieces of whiting, macaroni & cheese and greens. The buffalo dipped chicken was good, albeit, very messy with the thin sauce running off of it. The non dipped wing was not seasoned very well and didn’t have much flavor. The fish didn’t have very much flavor to it either. The macaroni was good and the greens weren’t bad. Overall, we found the food to be pretty average and while there may have been better options on the menu, we are not inclined to return.

We arrived at 12:05pm for lunch. The dining room was empty. We were seated and had placed our order from the lunch menu by 12:10pm. Our food arrived 35minutes later, at 12:45pm. No explanation was offered for the delay. In addition, one of the sides was not what we had ordered. Twice the waitress stopped at our table say that she had no idea why our order was taking so long. The food was only average, except the greens were too salty for our taste. During the first 15 minutes of our wait, a man, apparently the manager/chef, sat at the bar eating and giving instructions to the two staff members on duty in the dining room. He then went to the back and took another 20 minutes to prepare our order. During our wait another customer came in and waited 20 minutes for a carry out order which she had called in earlier. The management here apparently has zero consideration of the customers time or possible lunch schedule. We will not be back.

I saw all of the wonderful praise filled reviews and thought meh, okay Ill try it. I must say that the customer service (staff) were very attentive and friendly, this place is small but is also very inviting. I waited about 15 minutes just to pay for my food and then another 45 to actually get my food. I tipped the waiter who took my order as well as apologize continuously for such a long wait. I arrived home and well......... I was less than underwhelmed with my Meatloaf, mac & cheese, greens and cornbread. The meatloaf left an after taste and could only be described as minced meatloaf, but the sides were okay. The cornbread was just horrible! Over all it was a family secret they should have kept hidden. I cant say that I will try them ever again, but they have a large following of customers who swear by their food. This was my first and last time at this place.

Saw the mixed reviews had to try it for myself. I dont know whats so secret but the food there isnt. It was NOT made from scratch....my nephew ordered the jumbo hot wings and the sauce came out of the jug...the rolls came out of a pack they popped them in the microwave. The macaroni and cheese tasted like it had cream cheese in it and the greens came out of a can and tasted absolutely horrible. The only thing that was good was the fish....the fish was excellent.....my sister wanted a fried chicken breast and they said they didnt serve fried chicken breast...what kind of soul food restaurant doesnt have fried chicken breast. The waiter kept saying our drinks were on the way and then asked us our drink order again. Needless to say they should have kept this secret in the family. Will not be going back!

My mom and I first time visit on April 30,2017 and when we walked in I automatically thought of the place in Hampton called Soul Cafe so I figured we give this place a try. I didnt want a dinner so when I saw turkey burgers on the menu I was alright let me try it. I was not disappointed at all. It came with sweet potato fries which was a bonus. I truly enjoyed my meal. The best turkey burger Ive had. Yummy. My mom ordered yams, collard greens with baked chicken and she enjoyed her meal as well. We live in Hampton and Yorktown so hopefully when we come through Richmond again I will stop by. BTW I ended up ordering the turkey burger and sweet fries to go. I ate it for lunch today...... Scrumptious

4.3 out of 5. Laid back casual dining. Ive been there twice. Ordered baked chicken with cabbage and mac and cheese the first time. Second visit ordered pork chops with mashed potatoes and cabbage and a side of yams. Pork chops are amazing. Unlike other soul food places they dont overseason the food. I dont typically put salt on my food when I eat out but I did sprinkle a little bit on the Mac and cheese. Yams were amazing. Owner and staff are polite. Takes less than 25 minutes from being seated to being served food. I will return.

Excellent restaurant with great food. Ordered a Greek Salad and it had a ton of fresh ingredients and a lot of feta cheese. Josh was our server and he was excellent with checking on us regularly and making sure we were happy with everything. Mom had a great dinner also with greens, yams and all the fixings from her chicken dinner. I highly recommend this place for a great sit down environment or food to go in the Richmond Virginia.

Each and every time I stop by Family Secrets I have a great dining experience. The manager and staff are always very friendly! The manager/owner often stops by the table to greet you in a friendly manner. The food is great and the home made tartar sauce is very tasty!

I got the seafood platter and it was skimpy and over priced, the sides werent hot at all! My husband got a chicken & fish dinner, the chicken was hot and was pretty good, his fish was "ok". My visit was disappointing overall.
