The food here is great, IMO one of the best in W-S as far as food is concerned. Their pancakes are excellent. However, Inconsistency would be a great word to describe the service. My wife and I both have been there a few times and every time something different. A couple if times we had to wait a while to be served. Today we sat for over 10 minutes and nothing, it wasnt even that busy, if so I would have understood this whole debacle. Several people walked right by us and I made eye contact with every one, still nothing. Had to be 5 or more people. Finally had to flag down waitress. When I told her in a normal tone how long we were waiting for only drinks, she looked at me very angrily, took drink order and left abruptly. By then we already knew what we wanted. To top it off, after another 10, the hostess had to finally be the one to take order. We didnt even get the cornbread starter that we so frequently seen the guys bringing out, and normally give you while you wait. Had to ask for that as well. It was more like we were being TOLERATED rather than served. For a place that prides itself on everyone being your server, it didnt work out very well for us. It wasnt the waitresses fault. I think there should be a shift leader to make sure everyone is good to go, for some CONSISTENCY. If they were there today they were definitely M.I.A. (missing in action).

Stopped in for breakfast for a change from Marys (which is a stones throw away). The prices are similar, however The Toastery has hollandaise available *every* day...not gonna lie, this is a menu item that will typically win my patronage. Ordered a mimosa, an SMG omelette (spinach, mushroom and Gruyere) with hashbrowns, rye toast and a side of hollandaise. The hashbrowns are actually garlicky papas - chunky red potatoes - so if youre looking for sliced or shredded, seek an alternative. Name aside, theyre fantastic. My omlette was scale-free and properly cooked, but the filling was extremely bland. Im pretty sure the veg filling wasnt seasoned, and was a bit overcooked to sliminess. Mimosas were nice, very tasty. Id give this a 3 1/2, I was really unimpressed by the veritable gaggle of staff (6! at one point) standing around the podium and the service, while polite, was pretty indifferent despite the emptiness of the place and the "all waitresses are your waitress!" credo I was informed they operate under. Oddly empty on a Friday morning, which...in the arts district...? Hm. Will give another go someday. Still better than most heart attack-inducing breakfast places in W-S.

My boyfriend & I arrived at around 8:30 Sunday morning, so they werent busy at all. We each ordered coffee & water. Our water was brought first, then the waitress went back to get the coffees, then she left again to go retrieve the creamer. She easily couldve brought it all at once as to not keep us waiting so long just to get served our beverages. She was friendly and the coffee was good. We each ordered French toast with sausage. The French toast was cold & the sausage patties perfectly round, flat, & rubbery. They were identical to the sausage served at McDonalds. Yuck. When our meals were delivered, the server had to go back for syrup. Again, an unneeded extra step causing us to wait before we could eat what was already in front of us. The French toast breakfast plates were $10 each..kind of a lot for cold bread & rubbery, prepackaged sausage patties. We had a different server every time something was brought to us & nobody ever came to check on us. Less than mediocre food & undesireable service. We wont be back. But hey, the coffee was good.

The manager refused to allow me to bring my service animal. She told me i had to have "special paperwork" and made me leave him tied outside in February cold while my family ate inside in direct violation of federal law. Quote from ada.gov: Q: My county health department has told me that only a guide dog has to be admitted. If I follow those regulations, am I violating the ADA? A: Yes, if you refuse to admit any other type of service animal on the basis of local health department regulations or other state or local laws. The ADA provides greater protection for individuals with disabilities and so it takes priority over the local or state laws or regulations.

This place has improved since we have been going here. We actually used to go to Marys and occasionally here. Now we come here and sometimes go to Marys. Why? The servers ARE very attentive. Its the everyone is your server concept which sometimes in other places turns into no one is your server concept but NOT here. I miss the old manager because she was awesome but the place seems even better. The food comes out fresh and hot and if they mess up, they make it right or "over right". We really have great and consistent experiences here. The food is good and I love the specials. The quiche is the best in town.

We have gone a few times because they offer gluten free breakfast items and two in our family have Celiac. My food came out cold the first time and the second time they just couldnt get our order right after multiple tries. It has great patio seating which we love but the helpers to the servers were not helpful or kind. We might try again because its hard to find gluten free breakfast in the triad, but it kind of ruins the experience when your watching everyone else eat while they try to fix your order - on both visits. I really want to love this place but they are not making it easy.

The saying is, "You get what you pay for" but with the Famous Toastery Winston-Salem... "You get a whole lot more than what you pay for"! All of the positive feedback, comments and ratings are accurate! This is the kind of place you want to share with friends and build good memories around. I lucked up when I dropped by on my way to Chicago from Jacksonville, NC. I was hungry and I had a two hour layover and this fine dining experience was only blocks away from the Greyhound Station! PERFECT TREAT FOR ME!

Waiting in line at Marys? Wondering if their brunch could be worth the 1.5 hour wait? It isnt. Walk the 15 ft over the Famous Toastery and enjoy excellent breakfast options (and brunch and lunch) thats cheaper, has better service, is less ridiculously cramped, has outdoor seating, and is absolutely delicious. Dont get the same thing twice, then you wont get to try all the other awesome stuff. Complaints: It was hot 2 of the times I went. Why cant the toastery change the weather?

Great place, glad I found it. Its hard to find a good breakfast/brunch place in Winston. Marys is pretty good, but Ive always felt it was overrated, especially for the price. That cheap bottled orange juice? Come on. Take breakfast seriously if thats the theme of your restaurant. Anyway, I dont know about the orange juice at this place, and if its the same Id be disappointed, but the sandwich and pasta I had were excellent. Very friendly staff as well. Ill certainly be coming back.

I have time to write this review because I am at this restaurant sitting at a table ignored now for almost half an hour. 7 out of the 8 people at my table have empty drinks, no staff to be found, and none of the items we earlier asked for brought to the table. The tables around us are only half filled. Their is ZERO reason for this type of poor service. I will never be back, to many good places to eat close by. If you want at least mediocre service, go somewhere else.
