17 October 2016 - This place has great sandwiches, BUT they really need to work on their signage. *This place is cash or check only!* There is no indication of this when waiting in the 10+ minute line. No mention of this when you start to order. There is only a small, taped-over sign flat on the counter that mentions this info. We lucked out and my wife had her checkbook. While we were waiting for our food we saw multiple other people turned away because they only had a credit/debit card. I doubt they came back either. The one couple was pretty frustrated for sure. I cant blame them. I wouldnt come back either when the line is so long. For the record Im totally fine with places not accepting cards. But you need to be very proactive and place a sign (multiple signs?) in a very obvious place, like on your front door. The cashier was even grumbling about people that didnt know. News flash, your signage sucks!! Its not the customers fault. Not a good first impression, even with great sandwiches.

We stopped in during a family vacation and just figured we would look at some local cheese. Then I noticed the amazing sandwich board. Everyone in my family could NOT stop raving about how good theirs was, we all were exchanging bites. Everything was fresh and perfectly made and *very* reasonable at $5 My favorite was the Carp River on the pretzel bread(Chicken Breast, Cucumber, Lettuce, Tomato, Leelanau Peppercorn Formage Blanc, and Pesto-Mayo) my only complaint is that I didnt live 5 hours away so I could stop by once a week!

Not only is the cheese itself amazing but they make some of the best sandwiches I have ever had! My favorite is the North Shore sandwich, I prefer it on the pretzel bread but once when I went they were out of it and I tried it on a baguette which was also pretty amazing! They have many unique sandwiches to choose from! The cookies are really good too! Yummy! It is fun walking around, view the water & visit the shops of Leland, "Fishtown" as well so plan to walk around a little too!

Great sandwiches. My wife and I ordered a "bagged" lunch which includes sandwhich, a drink, chips, pickle and a cookie. For two orders it was $19 even. The ingredients are fresh and bread is really good. The downside is we know how long the wait can be so we ordered while we were still in Traverse City (40 min wait), they were out of pretzel bread once again. Lastly they only accept cash or check. Spring for a square register!

Roast beef on pretzel bread -- its delicious. Village Cheese Shanty has the best sandwiches in Leland. Its great if youre looking for a quick bite while walking around Leland or if you want to pack a lunch to eat later while driving or hiking around. The latter is my favorite approach -- getting a sandwich and then heading to one of the Manitou Islands for a day of exploring with a Cheese Shanty sandwich for lunch!

The Zingermans of Leelanau... or all of Northern lower Michigan, actually it easily rivaled Zingermans for quality and flavor, and was great value. HUGE sandwiches with tasty ingredients, the line moved fast and we enjoyed our meal out on the tables by the fishing boats. Didnt partake but theyll sell you a beer with your lunch.

What yummy sandwiches! Id say that most people can share one sandwich--but then youll want leftovers, so dont share. I ordered the Fishtown Pretzel Bread Sandwich, and I highly recommend it. We were asked to pay with cash, and that was a little inconvenient. However, the place was incredibly cute and I hope to go again.

Crazy busy during the lunch rush, especially on weekends. Call ahead to jump the line. The pretzel buns are delicious, but a lot of bread. I got the South Shore, which is really messy, but the pesto mayo is great! As its a cheese place, they are very generous with the cheese on your sandwich.

Best sandwich shop in Michigan! I have never had anything I did not like. Their pretzel buns are amazing and the cheese is spectacular. I recommend getting the brown bag lunch complete with beer and chips. Take your lunch to the next door beach and bask in the glory of Lake Michigan.

Took a while to get through the line but food came out quickly once the order was placed. The sandwiches were excellent and fairly priced. Get the bag lunch... sandwich, drink, chips or slaw, and a cookie for $8.50! 8 people in our group ate there and everyone loved it.

A great and simple sandwich. I had a ham, Gouda on pretzel bun. The flavor was great but there was a bit too much bun. I would defiantly come back for another when I return to the area. Expect the shop to be crowded but the service will be quick.

Absolutely worth the stop. I have been going since I was little and still make sure we get at least one sandwich every trip. I dream of these sandwiches. You cant go wrong with anything on the menu. Cash only, so be prepared! Love this place.

A favorite place for locals and tourists alike. The sandwiches are the best, and at a really good price. The pretzel bread sells out by mid-day in the summer so make sure that you go early. Can be hour long waits. Totally worth it though.

Very nice people and great selection we got there at the close of day and they only had sourdough or wraps and I chose sourdough and mine broke in half in my first bite so I wish I would have chose a wrap. But sandwich was pretty good.

Best sandwiches in town! Anything on the pretzel bread is amazing, and they let you swap out the cheese on any sandwich; my personal favorite is the jalapeno havarti. Their beer and wine selection is impressive, too.

Hands down...best sandwich I have ever had. My family and friends spend 1 week on North Manitou Island each year and always make sure to stop here before and after for cheese, beer and sandwiches. M22! A+
