So last night I took my mom out to xochis for her birthday dinner in Detroit, MI the heart of Mexican town and it was horrible. Needless to say it’s not the waitress’s fault the food there is crap. Folks this is not an authentic Mexican restaurant, trust me!!! Mexican culture and cuisine consists of the basic ingredients, onions, garlic, cilantro, jalapenos, beans and rice. Right off the bat being Hispanic myself I expected a traditional authentic meal and what I got was caned mush plopped on my plate. I asked if I could get cilantro on my tacos and the waitress said "I’m sorry we don’t have cilantro" my response was what kind of Mexican restaurant doesn’t have cilantro. She apologized but nodded for me to move on. I asked to get a horchata for my son. (Horchata is a popular Hispanic drink, like asking for sprite or a coke but its boiled rice milk, cinnamon and sugar; very good) they didn’t have that either. So my son got a Shirley temple instead. However, before we could even order the lighting in there was so bad we had to use our smart phone flash light application so we could see the menu. My mom liked her chimchangas but my husband and I ordered the same tacos, carne asada, yet the tacos were dripping in oil, you could tell that they were put in a pan and almost fried and not grilled. The oil made the tortilla soggy to the point that it was breaking open. My son had the traditional taco with hamburger meat and it was the equivalent to taco bell but with fewer flavors. He took one bite and that was it. He ended up eating my tacos instead. The waitress even noticed that my husband didn’t touch but one of his tacos and nothing of my son’s food and never asked if we liked it, of if we wanted something instead. My brother had the nachos which would have tasted better if we went to taco bell because the same watery caned hamburger was poured on top with some shredded cheese, Lett, tomato and sour cream. The chips were soggie before he even dug in. Our tab came to $74 and the only good thing about our night out was the margaritas, (at least the bar tender knew what he/she was doing)... Knowing it’s not the waitresss fault, (Im a waitress myself) I still tipped her accordingly. Remember it’s not the servers fault when food is disgusting she didn’t cook it, prep it, or even taste it before it came to you, she takes the order and serves it. It’s the cheep manager who orders D rated food to save money and turn a bigger profit because our meal was not even close to being worth $74. We will never go back there again. If you want a more authentic Mexican restaurant I would suggest Mi Pueblo, that’s 100 % better. I hope this helps.

Went here Sunday the 14th January after a play downtown. We should have stayed downtown!! I went with my girlfriend on her recommendation and was looking forward to going afterwards for dinner. It all started with being told they we would have to wait for awhile on my dinner selection because it was to be placed downstairs. (not sure why that makes a difference and neither did our waitress) as she had no idea as to how much longer it would take due to that. So we decided to order an appetizer to pass the time and Margaritas. Well the "mini chimis" were not available and we ordered the Flaming something or another to pass the time. well it came and was waterlogged to the point of soaking out burritos to where we had to cut them up on our plates to eat them. Well after starting with our appetizer and half a burrito into our stomachs our dinners came and sat them on our table! Really?? I mean it was supposed to take longer approximately a half hour longer we were told and it literally came within 5 MINUTES of the app! Our dinners were terrible and had no flavor or taste what so ever. If someone can tell me how u can dry out Cheese burritos i sure would like to know. As for my stuffed pepper with cheese, itb is one of my favs i order elseware at other mexican restaurants. It was bland and no flavor at all. Honestly im not looking for a freebie but when the waitress dont seem to want to be bothered well, maybe she should have gone home back to bed. NO EXCUSE for the food and the service from an establishment like this. I am from out of town and can tell u this, i have never had to wait for a glass of water refill especially after asking and being seen twice it was empty! To the management, u really need to have your cooks look over your dishes as i have never had a salad served to me with white tomatoes and no sour cream or guacamole on the side of it on any mexican dinner plate i have ever had in my life. Unfortunately it looks as if im not the only one with this problem with your establishment. I will be going elseware. Absolutely terrible.

The food was great. When we sat down I could tell there was something off about the waitress, she had an attitude. There was a group of 12 of us and we had two separate tables, and we wanted separate checks. She said they dont do that there but she would for all of us. At the end of the meal we had to wait 20 minutes for our checks. We asked another waiter if we could get our checks and then our waitress finally came over. The waitress said she did not appreciate us keep asking for our checks, we only asked once. She got an attitude and apparently started to say she was doing us a favor by doing this. Excuse me but you work for the restaurant. If youdont like working there then leave. The other table that was with us, she was nice too.as we were leaving she started talking about us to the other table. She asked the other table if we were friends or there related to us. First of that is non of your business. This girl pissed me off and when I told the manager all she said was sorry. Worst experience I have ever had, if it wasnt for my friends that were with me I would have caused that girl out.

In my opinion the best restaurant in Mexican Town. Rudy and his family have owned this restaurant for a long time and the food is just as good now as it was over 40 years ago. My go-to place when I want good Mexican anywhere in the Detroit area. Usually go with a combo platter. Chips are in house maid and served with two kinds of salsa. Chips are always hot too. Not like El Charros in Fraser where it seems like they pulled them out of a bag and threw them on the plate. I used to go to this place with my dad as a kid and wed have huevos rancheros on a Saturday morning for breakfast. Great service, great cocktails, excellent food! Love this place. Never a bad meal or a bad thing to say about it. And especially since Ive been going here since I was a kid and Im now 53. Not many places can stay in business that long and still keep the quality and quantity like this place has. And the prices are very good too.
