A couple years ago while the turnpike was undergoing that massive widening project and I was looking for a good way to get around the congestion I tried coming through Hightstown out to Rte 130 and while stuck in traffic going through town I noticed this what appeared to be a quaint little diner similar to ones I remember while growing up in South Jersey. I thought that if I ever had a chance to come through town when I wasnt pressed for time I would check them out and see how they were. I realized two weeks ago that I would have that opportunity on a return trip from Newark Airport however as I drove by there I realized that there was no where to park the bus other than along the road a half block away in the pouring rain. I decided that I would wait a little longer and was fortunate that it was only a bit more than a week later I was able to stop in. Upon arriving a little after 7:00 on a Sunday morning the parking lot was empty which had me concerned that they were not open yet but then I did see someone through the window so knew I was okay. Being empty was a good thing since it also meant they were not too busy to take care of me which they did with no complaints from me on the service and a praise also for having a decent size coffee cup and not one of those stupid tiny little cups that you have to refill 4 or 5 times before your meal is done. Speaking of the coffee it was better than many of the other diners I have been in so I do not think you will be disappointed if you order it. Not having ever been there before I had to peruse the menu a while before making my choice and decided that just as I do at other places I ordered a breakfast that had a little of everything, sausage, bacon, eggs, home fries, toast and pork roll which I have never liked but was glad when they were willing to change it for another slice of bacon. The bacon was cooked just the way I like it, a little soft but a little crispy as well and the sausage was also very good as it was the small breakfast links instead of the nasty fat sausage that other places use. Definitely worth stopping in though I dont know i I will again as I dont get the opportunity to go that way with extra time all that often.

If youre not from NJ or they dont have diners where you live, you could be excused for mistaking the Hightstown for a top-notch NJ diner. It is not. It caters to its regular locals-over-50 crowd (did the reviewer rave about the great "Early Bird Special"? Nuff said), and the food is equally as bland. Our pancakes came with margarine instead of butter, the mozzarella sticks were like breaded string beans (this is an NJ diner staple, I have never seen them this small), and the bacon was carbonized. Im not sure why it was featured on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" on the Food Network. The atmosphere was noisy, the wait staff was attentive and friendly, and the prices were comparable for the area. But there was nothing that would make me go out of my way to eat here again. If youre in the area then fine, otherwise you could definitely do better elsewhere. Once and done.

We always go to the diner and i always have a great experience. Great food great service. But today was exceptional! I have a son who has ASD and he is particular with his food. Before the food came out I was told that it was taking a bit longer because the first chicken tenders were too brown so when they did them again and the food came out they were still overcooked and too brown, my son was not happy. So i had to walk him out of the diner and calm him down. When I came back the owner was so amazing he took it upon himself to get chicken breast and make the chicken himself to make sure they were done the correct way. I was so shock and was so thankful to know there are people who care and not judge. They made my son so happy and to take the time to get fresh chicken and do it himself was so thoughtful..

My husband and I walked into the diner and there was a funny smell, but neither one of us said anything. We had water put on our table and my husband got coffee, the waitress took our order and we got luke warm soup, witch was OK, but we sat with our water and coffee for 2 hours till my husband finally got his breakfast order, but when I got my crab cakes after he was done eating, my crab cakes were cold in the middle and we had 3 different waitresss to bring us our meal. Then, someone started to clean up the floor with a pine oil smell while we were eating. I did not eat the crab cake meal and refused to pay for the crab cakes. Never have I ever been to a restaurant that was so disorganized, and the hostess argued with my husband that the food was freshly made that morning, not even a sorry!

Stopped here after the NJ Turnpike became a parking lot and were pleasantly surprised. The prices are excellent and the portions are huge. The ambiance is classic Americana and the service was attentive, helpful and prompt. The food was extremely good classic American fare. We got a chicken gyro and a California Cheeseburger, both of which were excellent. The french fries were top notch and the soups were first rate (we got beef barley and matzo ball). The bathroom was clean but a little drafty and there was no toilet paper but that was our only complaint. Take the time to jump off the highway and have a hearty lunch in the great spot!

Great service and friendly staff for the most part. The newer hostess seemed a bit stingy with seating people, and upset that we had several tables for our party (we were fine not sitting together, but they made a fuss as if we had asked and were told we could not). The food was great, but a bit pricey for the serving size and what it was. Solid "meh-quality" diner coffee which is (seriously) exactly what I like!

I would have givin this place a 5 star rating, BUT... tonight we were needed a place to park for another store we were going to and out of nowhere some guy comes over to us and RUDLY told us that unless we were eating there we can not park there. And for this reason I WILL NEVER EAT AT THE HEIGHTSTOWN DINER AGAIN!!! Just because of a lousy parking spot, you have lost me and family and friends!

The food was excellent I had cream chipped beef and a side of hash, the hash was delicious I would highly recommend. My only issue was with the seating arrangements. My chair was in a high traffic areas and I was constantly moved by passerbys. All in all it was a good meal and I would highly recommend. Thanks. All in all this experience took me to flavortown.
