Gave this place a shot since I usually dine on the other side of the street in the main drag that is Mexican Town. I learned to stay there. Entered to a vacant dining area with the manager having casual conversation at the counter with two friends. Was not greeted or seated until the waitress got around to it. Had our choice of table and selected one against the windows. Table was found to be filthy upon later inspection, with salsa and stains basically becoming part of the grout between the tiles on the table, if not the grout itself. Placed our orders and waited while having small talk over chips and salsa... and waited...and waited some more. Not once did the waitress swing by to see if we needed more chips/salsa or any drink refills. Another customer came in to dine alone and stood at the counter for around 5 minutes before he was seated. This was odd because the manager was continuing her conversation just a few steps away the entire time he was at the counter. After about 20 minutes of waiting, we were served. Kind of a long wait time for being the only diners with a food order placed. The food cannot be compared to the other restaurants in the area, since it basically doesnt deserve to be comparable. Taco salad was a mix-up of beans and ground beef, with beans coming out the winner. No cheese on a taco salad either, basically just a mushy bean cluster of gross. Chimichangas were about the size of what you would get if you bought a taquito from 7-Eleven and served with a bland rice and bean combo on the side. Finished eating (some of) the food and just went to the counter to make my escape where the manager couldnt even figure out how to use a debit card as a form of payment. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this place... it doesnt deserve to be anywhere near the quality restaurants in the district.

It is hard to decide what was worse i.e. the decor or the food. The restaurant is located in a somewhat shady looking location in Mexican Town, Detroit. However, on a street comprised of unwelcoming looking places, it does stand out as being well built and looks somewhat new, with its own private parking lot. However, thats probably where the positives come to and end. The restaurant is subdivided into smoking and non-smoking. In the larger, non-smoking section, the stand out "feature" is the large wall behind a make-shift stage, that looks as if it is covered in a large garbage bag. The lighting is extraordinarily poor with a terrible glare coming off the windows. There is no evidence of temperature control, and the word "style" is nowhere in sight. The Mexican food is not bad, but one wonders if they hired a Guatemalan to cook for them. STAY AWAY from the Colombian food which is simply an embarrassment and leaves you feeling heavy and unwell afterward. There appears to be a number of mini-concerts and events that take place regularly here, and one gathers that they have a loyal following. This following may likely be made up of family members or people with no where else to go, as this place is pretty terrible otherwise. Overall, it is a disappointment and is probably only able to survive due to a lack of any serious competition.

Skip it. My husband was in the mood for a Mexican lunch the other day, and we were already downtown. Typically wed go to Los Galanes, but the last time we went there the quality of food had really gone down. So on a whim, we decided to try El Comal. My first impression was that the tables looked like they hadnt been cleaned in a decade. Then we noticed this incessant banging/crashing sound. It turned out someone was practicing drums upstairs. There was also a spanish music video channel blaring on the TV. It was a very unrelaxing atmosphere. The lunch buffet wasnt very impressive. I began to feel like we were on an episode of kitchen nightmares. The decor was kind of mix and match adobe, wagon wheels, plastic brass... and the ceiling tiles were water-stained. The food wasnt bad, but it wasnt any better than I could make at home. The service was average. We will not be returning.

I went to eat there and i was very dissapointed with the food and also while i was eating i saw a lot of Cockraches on the table and i talk with the owner Elda and she was just said that they were dead , she didnt apologized or nothing. Also the restaurant is very unsanitary VERY DIRTY. I also saw one waitress who was an old lady not sure why the owner has such old waitresses, well she was picking her nose and taking food out of her mouth with her hands and DIDNT WASHED HER HANDS!!!!

The service when I went to the restaurant was extremely poor. They messed up the same order twice and were not apologetic at all. Also, their mexican food is not as good as the surrounding restaurants. If youre looking for good mexican and good service, go down the street.

Authentic and delicious. The best pupusas and salsa ever. The nicest family. I live in Ann Arbor now and long for this place with fond memories from the early 1990s. Elda Castellanos salsa verde is pure heaven.
