Petit Robert Bistro – Needham, MA – 6/9/2016 What was anticipated to be a great meal unfortunately turned out to be a not-so-good experience… Average at best… mind you at this point in the day I look forward to an exceptional meal… Somewhere… I can safely cross this one off my list. My server was nice enough but I had to ask if they did bread here as it was not offered. One of the things I love about French food is the bread. Here it was just ok… Served room temperature, nicely plated and all but lacking the kind of rich flavour I have enjoyed at other French restaurants… This one was more on the bland side… For the salad, which actually came out before the bread, I had the Petit Salades… Mixed field greens, Panko-crusted goat cheese dressed in a shallot vinaigrette. My description of the salad was actually better than the salad was… Then theres the $4.00 up charge for the goat cheese… Really?! Why not just charge more for the salad and include it… Kinda cheapens the experience. At the manager’s recommendation I had the Saumon Poché… Poached dill salmon, mashed potatoes, arugula and tarragon cream sauce… Again, below what I was expecting… This was a rare occurrence because typically when I dine in French restaurants the cuisine is generally really good. At this point in the meal I contemplate my dessert and cappuccino but after a rather awkward conversation with the owner, decided to ask for the check instead and leave… Ill chalk it up to maybe he was in a bad mood because it thats the level of engagement he exhibits with all of his patrons, like me, many wont be coming back… Extremely disappointed…

Petit Robert Bistro on 45 Chapel Street in Needham is a terrible restaurant run by a horrible man named Jay Spencer who has no clue about customer service. I made a reservation at this restaurant for Valentine’s Day and when we got there (on time) we were led to a table that was practically in front of the kitchen. There were a few other open tables at the restaurant in a better location so we asked to be seated at one of them but we were told by Mr. Spencer that they were reserved… Well, I made the point that I also had a reservation and this wise guy (again, the OWNER) said that we need to have a party of four to sit at one of these tables. We chose to accept the crappy table he offered us but then a few minutes later another couple came in and were seated at the exact table that we were told was reserved for four. I called Mr. Spencer to protest this and he gave me an attitude as if he has the right to decide who seats were at his restaurant and he then said that if I don’t like it I can go eat elsewhere… So we walked out of the restaurant and went to eat elsewhere. What a jerk, as if he owns the last restaurant in the Boston area. As far as I’m concerned I am never going to set a foot at that restaurant again and will go out of my way to make sure that others won’t either.

I ate early evening with friends. The food was terrific, the service was awful. We had the slowest service I think I have ever received in a supposedly good restaurant. In spite of the lack of a sense of urgency on the part of our waitress, I lay our mediocre experience at the feet of management. There did not seem to be sufficient wait staff. Also, on a hot night the crowding of too many tables in a fairly small space was especially outrageous. The idea is great, but the execution needs some work. With fewer tables and better training of wait staff, this place could be a real gem. For now, I do not plan to return.

Meringue dessert was light and delicious. Sweetbread dinner was good with some of the best mashed potatoes Ive ever had! The friseé salad was perfectly dressed with crispy, salty lardons. Our server was okay, but it was the man who I believe was the owner who pushed our experience over the top. He made great wine pairings, an excellent dessert suggestion, and was incredibly kind to our table. Thank you for making our evening and experience wonderful!

I was a little surprised by the other reviews here-- I have been to this place several times and it has become my favorite Boston Area restaurant. The food is just that extra little bit better than you usually get, and its like home cooking-- you dont get that usual post-restaurant-meal stomach upset that is so common for me. Its just really good food, feels like going to France, and has charming waitstaff.

WOW. I had been meaning to go back to Petit Robert Bistro for a year of so. After hearing that I knew owner/chef took over I figured now was the time. Absolutely the most beautiful presentation of food I had ever seen and the taste was up there just as high. I had the Spinach Eggs Benedict.

As French native, we feel like home when we go to Petit Robert Bistro! Food is very good, with great quality of products (smoked salmon, cheeses, charcuterie...) and the French Kiss cocktail is awesome. Highly recommend this warm and delightful place!

They pride themselves on reasonable prices, and we were not disappointed by that. One of us got a fish dish, and it was under-seasoned, but other than that the food was great. Some of the decor is dated. The service was excellent.

There a couple of times. Can be ok if not busy. Small wine list. Flank steak was not good. Pates and cheses are pretty good. Sometimes the staff has a bit of the Newbury St. attitude that doesnt work in Needham

Owner goes out of his way to meet customers and help them choose some great wines. Excellent choices of mussels , lamb & salmon! We eat here often & enjoy a quiet atmosphere. Very good table service.

Great outdoor seating but the uninspired menu and sluggish service have only gotten worse over time. Its probably why youll always be able to find a table here.

Prices are a little on the high side, but the food is wonderful. The short ribs are softer than fork tender, theyre pull apart soft.

Great food, friendly staff. Not too heavy. The space is a little bit small, but what they have they use very well.
