My boyfriend and I went sushi bar-hopping one night in Pasadena. The first place was out of the special fish by 8:30, the second place had a small selection, and the third place was very "spendy." We shouldve just gone to Tokoro, which is within walking distance of our aparment. We love it there! Sit down at the sushi bar and let the sushi chef make suggestions. That is how I came to try their live sweet shrimp, monkfish liver, spanish mackerel, and giant clam; dishes I wouldnt normally select on my own. They were amazing. Even when it comes to the dishes I get at every other sushi bar (spicy scallop hand roll, toro, miso soup, etc.), Tokoro does them very well. It is not overly fancy (like Sushi Roku), or kitchy (like Afloat Sushi). Plus, the staff is very friendly. If I was pressed to come up with one thing I didnt like about this place, its that the oyster shooters come in wine glasses, so that makes them hard to swallow (but you get more shooter, which is never a bad thing).

BEWARE Of Tokoro restaurant! I went here on March 26 - Sunday for lunch. I paid with my credit card and, as I always do, I checked my account online and everything was fine with the charge still pending. On Thursday, I saw double of the original amount to my credit card - shocked! I called their manager and he told me that "I" made a mistake on the tip. I wrote $3.00dlrs ( I NEVER GIVE MORE THAN 3 AND 5 DLRS TIP ON A $20DLR BILL) and their waiter named ADMIN altered to $31.00 dlrs. I also called my credit card and asked them to put a dispute on the charge. Beware of fraud and always keep your receipts. I will never go back here. BE CAUTIOUS. THIS PLACE IS A DISHONEST BUSINESS, NEVER MIND THE FOOD, YOU DONT BUILD A RESPECTED BUSINESS ON MONEY BUT ON RELATIONSHIP/CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THAT IS AN IMPORTANT INGREDIENT. SHAME! I locked my credicard today and ordered a replacement.

Small portions. Normally I prefer small portions, but only if the food is fantastic. The food was just okay. Semi creative rolls. The sake was stunningly awesome. The regular house hot sake. Wow. Order this and you wont be disappointed. Seriously saved the night. Eugene was our sushi chef. The guy was really nice and attentive. I would pick him to sit in front of again. The restaurant is cozy and welcoming. I would go again, but I would try different rolls or maybe a soup.

The service from the ladies were superb. They are kind and prompt. I only order same 3-5 choices from the menu every time. They know what I would order and welcome me sincerely. I like the Yellowtail collar and spice tunas. their combination boxes are more than enough for a person. The price of the food is also very reasonable for a Japanese restaurant.

I have now been here three times. Its pretty good. Today we arrived @330pm so lunch specials over(they end @3pm no exceptions) That meant $13.95 for combo. I had beef short ribs w/salad, miso, 3 cal rolls & tempera of which only one was shrimp(& a little thin one at that) Pretty tasty. Service so so hard to get a refill on tasteless tea($1,50 more).

came here for lunch...not impressed hamachi sashimi - consistency was to tough. should be buttery and smooth spicy tuna - very bland. at least the seaweed was crunchy spider roll - best flavor, but put together poorly. each piece feel apart in my chop sticks not coming back
