We are Japanese food lovers and have sushi, sashimi and Japanese food regularly. Our dinner here cost $42 (inc tips) for two people. We ordered a pork tonkatsu bento box and a combination plate of beef sukiyaki and sashimi, and hot tea. The pork tonkatsu was a bit thin and meat color looked slightly on the dark side, not sure if it was a bit old or not cooked properly but it tasted and ate all right. The sukiyaki tasted great while the accompanied sashimi was not bad for this mid level restaurant. The place is run and operated by all Japanese staff, including the sushi chef. The service could a bit better and more friendly but we got all food in short time despite them being full that night. The sukiyaki combo plate is of great value while the tonkatsu, although cheaper, we give it a fair price considering the meat quality could have been better. We have no problem recommend this place to others with some words of caution, but it is hard to beat this price any where.

A friend and I went to Ichi-Rikki for dinner and each ordered a Bento Box with chicken and sashimi and a sushi appetizer. The food was not fresh, the sauces out of bottles and the chicken was old, even though the waitress insisted it was prepared today. Trust me, the chicken may have been cooked today but it was thawed out two weeks ago. We were so appalled, we only ate the soup and a piece of our appetizer when we returned our food to the server. She presented us with a bill for food that went virtually uneaten. I even spit out the chicken. It wasnt her fault the food was inedible. She got her $3 tip. I do not recommend this restaurant if you like fresh food. I was quite surprised to see a few tables actually eating their food. But that may have been the first clue- only a few tables at dinner time. This is a first for us. We have been to Ichi Rikki for over 25 years. Never have had this experience....will NEVER go back!

Ichi Riki is a nice family-style restaurant. When it comes to traditional Japanese food like miso soup, sukiyaki, nabeyaki udon, etc. this is the best place in Monterey. The sashimi (raw fish) is fresh and top quality. The selection of fresh fish is limited; maguro, hamachi, tako, giant clam -- the standards. They dont have fresh salmon but instead serve smoked salmon (not my favorite). No uni, no ika. Because they dont stock the fancy stuff, they can offer excellent fish at reasonable prices. All he food is fresh and tasty. If you stick to basics you wont regret a visit. And it wont empty your wallet, either.

I brought my wife and two kids here today. The sushi was unappetizing, not even close to the quality of Safeway takeout sushi. But the dealbreaker was the dead cockroach in the fried rice. We pointed it out (twin antennae and all) politely to the waitress, who tried to claim it was chicken or beef. She then brought it back to the kitchen, and came back several minutes later claiming it was ginger. At no point did the chef bother to come out and say anything to us. When we left, he looked the other way. Lame.

Its very obvious that if you are not a local you will not get good service. I had to order my wifes entree twice and still did not receive it. No offers to comp or even a apology, when I tried to complain it was direct back at me saying it was my fault and that he didnt understand. They understood enough to get the the rest of the order correct and understood enough of there friends conversations to ignore other customers. Topped off with barely acceptable sushi. Dont waste your time.

Oldest Japanese restaurant In the Monterey County! Still pwned by shizu little old Japanese lady. This place is authenic as you can get! Yes its in dire need of renovations but its a great looking place lots of Japanese decorations. Food is always good homemade Teriyaki sauce, fresh Grade A big RED fish tuna not pale pink color. I come here for their miso soup and sushi great chow mein and green tea! Please give this place a shot

Very nice, very Japanese, with the sushi-maker in the middle, the bar on the right. Table lamps that give a very comfortable atmosphere. Generous sushi servings, miso soup thats the best Ive ever had! The service is second to none, with a veteran staff. The staff have been there since Ive been in Seaside. Over 20 years. Each dish was delicious. I cant say enough good things about this place!

I passed by many times and wanted to try it, but I was extremely disappointed. Imagine boiled, unsalted, tofu, that was the taste -- of everything. The service was neither good nor bad. The atmosphere was pleasant, I can say that. I didnt dislike the place, but it was not good food. There are better options in the vicinity.

8pm on a Saturday and no one is there should give you a clue, dont know why we even went in; brain fart. Server seemed mad that we got there 50 minutes before closing. Food was not fresh nor very good. Take these reviews with a grain of salt because they are far from the mark, this place shouldnt even be on the radar

The atmosphere is great. Food is delicious. You can even request a enclosed room in the back where you sit on the floor. Its a $10 up charge for the room but well worth it.
