We decided to dine at Stagnaros Restaurant late this afternoon and I went online to read reviews....WOW, if we had decided to take what they said to heart, might have missed a great meal in a great restaurant with wonderful people all around enjoying their meals. We devowered the calamari appetizer...with the two (red/white) sauces....it was great, enough for three people to absolutely ruin their appetites, then ordered: Denise had the Fish/Chips w/coleslaw; Tom had salmon/baked potato and chowder and I had salad and Linguini w/clam sauce. Our waiter Cirilo was very helpful in assisting in our menu choices, then attentive without hovering; the hostess was a sight for sore eyes in a lovely striped dress, the bus boys were there when we needed water or to take used plates. The couple next to us with their grandson Rafferty were delightful, as was the beautiful child, as we entered there was a father leaving, carrying another beautiful child. Denise and I requested "to go" containers because of the appetizer and the generous portions. The meal was wonderful, my linguini was perfect, the right amount of clams, sauce was butter, garlic, wine, clam with a hint of creme...oh my god it is good; Tom was very happy with his salmon and chowder but sniveled about wanting cracked pepper in it....rather than waiting and requesting some, he used the pepper on the able and next time I looked, the chowder was gone; Denise was really happy with her Fish and Chips, the white fish was perfectly cooked and the fries were too, and both were extremely generous in portion. We arrived at 8:00 and were seated immediately at a window seat; and left at around 9:30. It has been a delightful evening and all we talked about on the way home is how much we love going to dinner at Stagnaros. We all have been enjoying meals there since the early 60s and will continue to chose this place in the future. The lousy reviews I read earlier make me think that those who wrote them are unhappy people who like to snivel...about anything. Thank you Stagnaro Family for maintaining a wonderful Santa Cruz restaurant of such fine quality. Keep up the tradition. We will be back...I hope soon!

I went to lunch this week as I have many many times at Stagnaros on the wharf. I ordered my usual shrimp louie with a dressing on the side. When I started eating the shrimp I noticed that they tasted old and rather fishy. I lost my appetite and couldnt eat the salad due to the bad tasting shrimp. I said nothing to the waitress because I didnt want to cause a fuss. When my lunching partner finished their meal the waitress came to take our plates and noticed that I had barely tasted my salad. She asked if the salad was okay and my partner told her that the shrimp tasted old and fishy. Neither my friend nor I asked for a refund or free meal. I guess the waitress mentioned it to the boss because what happened next was shocking and uncalled for. The female boss came out with an attitude toward me for daring to infer that their shrimp tasted less than fresh and basically called me a liar. She also said I wasnt being charged for my salad. I still didnt say much to her due to her hostile attitude With that bad attitude and treatment, I and my well heeled friends who are local and usually dine there at least once a week will go to another place for our seafood. There are plenty of fine seafood restaurants in Santa Cruz, Monterey and other places. Fresh seafood never has that fishy taste. I eat sashimi often and when you purchase fresh fish to use, there is never a fishy taste. Old fish and shrimp taste fishy if theyve been thawed and refrozen several times. Beware my fellow seafood lovers of old fish at Stagnaros. PS There is a fly issue also at Stagnaros. You have to brush them away when you eat, yeech!

My sister brought me to this restaurant on my 73 birthdayt. We arrived about 3:00 and were seated immediately in a window seat with a wonderful view. Our waitress came over, introduced herself and brought water; then 15 minutes later came over and introduced us to another lady who was just coming on shift as our waitress was theoretically leaving. I ordered a cup of chowder and clam fettuccine; my sis ordered shrimp louis w/oil/balalmic on the side. The food arrived soon and we began to dine. My sis asked me to taste the shrimp which I found to be slightly off and very salty, which is unusual here as I have never had a bad meal at Stagnaros...we usually come on birthdays and when no one wants to cook. I asked the waitress to bring me a to go box" and she looked at my sisters plate, which had three shrimp missing, the two she ate, and the one I ate. The Waitress looked at her plate again, and I volunteered that the shrimp was a bit off. WE DID NOT ASK FOR A FREE MEAL, A COMP OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. The reason I told the waitress was thinking she would want to know this information in case some of the "fresh" shrimp had turned, been left out a tad too long or something. Instead, this other woman came out of the kitchen and yelled at us saying "Our shrimp is the freshest and this is good....we will comp but this shrimp is good" Again, WE DID NOT ASK FOR A FREE MEAL, A COMP OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. for that woman to come out and yell at my sister and me on my birthday has soured me on Stagnaros restaurant. I do not know why she chose to yell at us.

Stagnaro Brothers offered delicious food and an amazing view with superior service. First off, I want to commend the staff. From the moment I walked in, the staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating. This carried through my entire visit. I opted to dine upstairs to take advantage of the view, looking toward the famous Steamer Lane surfing spot by Lighthouse Point, and the Happy Hour items. The moment I was seated a server provided a menu and the bartender took my drink order. I decided upon a pint of "Stagnaro Bros. IPA" which I found out was supplied by Red Hook. It was, as expected, tasty...both pints! The bartender pointed out the Happy Hour food menu and, upon his recommendation, I selected the Chili Lime Prawn tacos. My meal arrived promptly. What a plate full of beautiful food! Three soft tacos were plated with a garnish of lime and radish. Each taco was literally piled high with diced prawns and pickled cabbage. The prawns were seasoned and sautéed in a chili lime and cilantro sauce. Mozzarella cheese, shredded, completed the tacos. They were delicious all the way down to the last bite of the last taco. Yes, I devoured all three! Due to it being Happy Hour, my check totaled less than $20 for the tacos and 2 pints. What a deal! My only regret was that, due to my travel schedule, I couldnt have stocked up downstairs at their fresh seafood market. What a tantalizing selection. Do yourself a favor and head on down to Stagnaro Brothers towards the end of the Santa Cruz Wharf.

What a disappointment. We have had dinner at this location several times over the years and took my parents there because they were hungry for fish. Never did I think we would have the experience we had. It was a Wednesday late afternoon. Hardly anyone in the restaurant. Our waitress Carol was very attentive. I ordered grilled salmon, my father ordered calamari steak. When I got my food, there were so many bones in the salmon I couldnt be comfortable eating it. I told the waitress and she went to talk to the cook. He told her that was to be expected!!! That is so untrue - I watch a lot of cooking shows and it is unanimous that you do not serve customers fish with bones in them. She brought me sand dabs to replace the salmon and I found two bones in those. This ruined my entire meal. My father said the coating on his calamari was not good and it appeared to be the same coating they put on my sand dabs. At no time did the manager come to the table, nothing was offered to use for the bad fish. In addition we were told the appetizer and drinks we ordered werent eligible for the discount because we were in the dining room. We will not be going to Stagnaros again. There are too many other choices on the wharf.
