My husband to me here on my birthday and this review is based on my first impression which sealed the deal for me. We walked in, there was only one table occupied with guest. We waited a few minutes, before a busboy I think seated us saying " you can sit anywhere you like." My husband and I ended up choosing a seat next to the window and this was strategically chosen due to the fact that it is VERY dark in there. The smell of the restaurant was not filled with delicious aromas of artisan cuisine, but more of the old building smell. Not a great smell. While we waited for our waiter, we listened to the overly excited waiter at the table that the other guests were seated. He was overly exaggerating his expressions when describing the meals and it became quickly annoying. We had the same busboy serve us waters. My husband is very picky when it comes to water and I could say he was very displeased with the water tasting overly purified where you can taste the chemicals. bleh. anyway... It was about 10-15 minutes before the waiter at the next table made his way to ours, which is good. And this is where it got irritating; He began describing the food and it was not an enjoyable experience. He was speaking fast and the thick accent was not helping. We politely asked him to repeat the specials but it didnt get any better. At this point I was too hungry and impatient to wait for any further explanation. We thanked him for his kindness and left the restaurant. I dont think Ill be coming back anytime soon.

Moxie, hands down, is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to in my life!!! If you ever go, make sure you visit in a party of four. Let me explain why....when you get there, totally ditch the menu and wait for the specials of the day. Our waiter was also one of the owners (I believe, could be wrong, either way hes always there) and he listed off like ten specials! I honestly have no idea how he remembered all of them, but props to him. Now, this is why you want to go in a party of four, its so you can each order a different entree and then, YOU SHARE!!!! For our party, we had the Lamb, Steak, Sea Bass, and Lobster. HOLY $@#*!!! EVERYTHING WAS SOOOOOOOOOO AMAZING!!! Its like orgasm in your mouth, roll on the floor, do a happy dance, sing at the top of your lungs amazing! I literally cant even describe what each dish was like because its indescribable. You seriously are just going to have to experience it yourself. Lastly, we were so full, we couldnt even eat any dessert, but we were given a shot glass of sipping chocolate. Hot damn, that was so delicious. Its this sweet, silky smooth chocolate that you drink and it was the perfect ending to a perfect meal! This place isnt cheap, but oh em eff gee, it was so worth it!!!!!

Jump off the beaten path and explore the unexplored part of downtown dining – Moxies will make you take notice. ;-) After frequenting this place for years, I felt it was time for me to express some gratitude for a real Sacramento gem and best kept secret. Immediately upon walking into this establishment, you get the feel of a chic San Francisco restaurant...a narrow, yet chic space with a hip vibe, which is romantic as well. And, to add a bit of Bi-coastal feel into the mix, you are, normally, greeted and seated by its very charismatic owner, whose wry sense of east coast humor and gruff delivery adds loads of character to the establishment reputation and uniqueness. And, if you never heard a server/owner rattle off 20 or so, detailed not-on-the-menu, delicacies, you will be impressed and overwhelmed in a good way. As for the most important ingredient of any truly successful restaurant, the food is OUTSTANDING and their generous portions even make a big boy like me blush with excitement! The prices are a bargain for the level of service and quality of food. So, take a chance on finding a gem in Sacramento. Bon Appetit Rob~

Great food, nice ambiance, attentive service. Would easily be a five star establishment and would have a line out the door if there was more warmth and humor from the wait staff. When we go to a quality restaurant such as Moxies, it is a brief vacation from our very busy world. This means the entire experience is a family getaway we look forward to with great anticipation. The entire restaurant experience should include a warm, friendly greeting and people who seem to love their work. This simply wasnt present. Perhaps they need a vacation themselves and to step back and realize what a great thing they have going.... Also, specials should be described to customers slower, with enthusiasm, and provide them in paper form as well. The food is so frickin good the specials and elegant cuisine deserves to be mulled over with joy not as a test of my attentiveness and memory. Otherwise, outstanding culinary experience. It just needs to be a total experience. This message is sent with good intent and without malice. Good luck Moxies.

Ive been a customer at moxie for over 10 years now. Over the years Ive made a point to explore what Sacramento has to offer in the way of fine dining, but since I found Moxie, Ive come up unexpectedly short. Like many others, when I go out to eat, its about both the food and the ambiance. I have always been pleased to be greeted at the door by either Bill or Adam, and usually they welcome me by first name. The atmosphere is always laid back, yet classy. I like to start by ordering the calamari, because its consistently the best Ive ever had. Pay no attention to the menu; either Bill or Adam will blow your mind with the specials as if they are closed until 5pm every day, just so they can memorize them to present to you later. Yes, Bill enjoys a few cocktails while working. To be quite honest, I wouldnt have it any other way. These two guys have created an atmosphere that gives you the feeling that youre at home for Thanksgiving dinner (if your parents were cool and your uncle could hold his alcohol).

Ive been a diner at many restaurants for many years and have never written a review for any. However, Moxie compelled me to comment with their excellent, yet subtle, attentiveness to us. The ambience was conducive to a relaxing meal - and even romantic, if that is your purpose. The food...AMAZING.. We had the lamb special and the encrusted salmon. The flavors just burst in our mouths and I believe my palate was hosting a party (complete with the Macarena!) Succulent meat and fish, crisp vegetables, creamy potatoes, perfect appetizers, warm bread, generous portions....we were prepared to take home a "doggie bag". No such thing this day....we ate EVERYTHING. The only drawback was that we were too full to have the dessert (a patron sitting next to us recommended the carrot cake she was gushing over!) As we left, we were thanked by name and the door held open. Hands down, this was the best birthday ever in terms of the meal. We will return.

I used to work for Adam at John Qs Restaurant on top of the Holiday Inn 16th floor,I had lost touch with Adam over the years, But 8 years ago I found out he had opened a Restaurant called Moxie and my wife and I went there 8 years ago Adam treated us like family and the meal was excellent!! I would encourage anyone that wants an incredible dining experience to go there the food & wine are second only to the service and atmosphere.. We try and go at least once a year!! Thanks Adam!!
