One of the prettiest restaurants at Berkeley. The inside is so clean and fancy! I love the atmosphere. The bread that they serve before the meal is really tasty, warm, and fluffy!! I probably would have been happy with just the bread. My friends and I ate too much bread that we werent that hungry once our meals came out. - Grilled Cheese: pretty good, fancy grilled cheese sandwich. It was fluffy (?), too. It came with potato chips and tomato soup. The tomato soup was much better than I expected! I thought it would be too salty and tomato-y for me, but it was just right. It tasted great with the bread. - Orzo Mac & Cheese: probably the best item that we ordered. It is small because its a starter, but it was very cheesy, tasty, and satisfying!! I didnt know that mac and cheese with organic tomato jam would make such a great combination!! Its pricey for its size ($8), but I highly recommend the mac and cheese. - Open Faced Sandwich: simple and good, but not amazing. My friend said that it got tiring part way through. The bread for the sandwich was great! - Five Burger: I got to try some of my friends, and it was juicy! I usually dont like burgers, but I liked this one! The fries that came with the burger were crispy and goood, but a little too salty. I came here once for my birthday, and I couldve gotten dessert on the house, but my friends and I were soooo full that we decided to skip out on that. Everything from food to service is great here. I highly recommend you check out this place!!

The hotel blew me away. It did that because this hotel is pretty much unlike most anything in the city of Berkley (well except maybe Chez Panisse). Berkeley is a dirty little city, with rift-raft everywhere, streets and people that are dirty/grungy (adds to the kookyness, yea yea) and restaurants that really are sub-par compared to say, well, any other city really. How do I know? Wellll maybe its because Ive stayed at places like the Four Seasons, Ritz and the Crillon in Paris- I know luxury and standards. However, the hotel is like walking into a cute, little oasis with very modern, clean, well-thought out rooms. A mini bar would be nice and a closer ice machine on the third floor to the north side of the building but its definitely not a deal breaker, especially for the price range of 100-200$. With all this being said, parking needs to be worked out for the customers. Hotels are full of people from out of town right? Not all of them take Bart and having a place where they can park for maybe even a discounted rate is wise. The suggestion by one of the reviewers below about an arrangement with some parking garages nearby would be benefcial. Moving on, stay here or at the Claremont when you come to Berkeley if you want something a tad nice.

Theres nothing wrong with five. But theres nothing impressive or interesting either. Started with the orzo Mac and cheese. Has a really tasty sauce and nice breadcrumbs but I wish the orzo had been more firm and the tomato jam was uninteresting (seemed like cooked down tomato sauce). I had the shortrib potroast which was decent, though the sauce had little flavor. My friend had the pork loin, which had a pretty good bacon jus. We had the chocolate torte for dessert. The torte was a reasonable execution of a classic, and the mint ice cream was decent. Overall the meal was competent but unremarkable. Good service. Id probably go back if someone else wanted to go and we were already nearby, but there are plenty of better options in the area.

Went here for lunch a while back. We started off with some onion rings. They had a great light texture, but that made them very difficult to handle/eat. I wish they were firmer so you could actually grab one without having to grab a greasy bunch of them. I got the burger. I have to admit, that burger was pretty tasty. Initially, I thought it was a little small, but midway through, I felt that I was pretty full. Perhaps its because its packed with chili and what appeared to be slaw. It was sweet and hearty, yet it had some tang that combined flavors that you dont generally see in a burger. Unfortunately it was served with MORE onion rings. By then I couldnt take any more so most of the rings on my plate werent touched.

With just a few tables and what seemed to be short staff, this place leaves a lot to be desired out of a weekend brunch. The bottomless mimosa actually has a bottom of 2 servings as you will be ignored after getting one refill. Portion sizes are for small kids. The fried chicken egg benedict tasted on par with other establishments, but was so tiny as a serving you could not really enjoy it. I suggest taking your wallet elsewhere.

Absolutely loved the room, with the red touches and the chandelier to die for, in the Shattuck Hotel. We dined early, so it wasnt that packed, but you could see how it could get noisy. Service was attentive and pleasant. Salads and ice cream were good but the chicken needed some salt. Pleasant option for Berkeley pre-theatre dining.

The server was so obviously stoned (or plain dumb) that he couldnt deliver drinks to the whole table. Half of our orders were wrong - and most came out over cooked or under cooked. One other server had the skillfulbess of a soviet waiter -dropping the wrong dish off to the wrong diner with a scowl. Dont go. Not even for a drink.

This is a great place for drinks and food before a show (or after if you like matinees like us!). They make very nice cocktails at the bar and the staff there is very friendly. And theyre very accommodating when you tell them you need to get out of there quickly to make your show.

Just came from mothers day brunch here, and it was phenomenal. There was a great selection of foods, but not so much to feel overwhelming or showy. And the atmosphere is closest on a way that you dont find in the hipster predominated Bay area dining scene.

This is the worst restaurant in all of Berkeley. My co-workers & I ordered Breakfast this morning & all of our food was overcooked, the cheese was the type that comes wrapped in plastic. Nasty!! Dried out omelets with plastic cheese. So not worth $14.00.

Decent bar program - they have classics and some of their own. If you need a cocktail and food, then grab a seat at the bar. The bar menu is fantastic as its pulls smaller items from the full menu. Dinner is fantastic here. Food is great.

A beautiful restaurant where I have never had anything but great food and Ive been there 7-8 times for an early dinner before theater or movie. How anyone can call their food "decent" is beyond me.

Great happy hour with a large bar and sitting area. I suggest sharing many small plates. The mac and cheese is delicious! Prices are on the higher side.

Excellent food, location, ambience and decor. Dessert was to die for and well forth the mid day calories. I will be going back!

Food was good but overpriced for what it was - space was stylish but too open and it was chilly most the time we sat there
