Have I got a place for you un-health conscious, frugal foodies out there! Rocket Burger and Subs serves up huge sandwiches and fried delights for astonishingly low prices, and much of the food is home-made. There’s also an enormous section of unusual soft drinks; for instance, there’s over two dozen brands of root beer to choose from. Dennis, one of the owners worked for A&W for 8 years, so he probably has root beer running through his veins by now. I saw Rocket Burger in a listing of new valley eateries, then did a little research. The reviews I saw were all stellar, so I knew we had to give it a try. It doesn’t look like much, inside or out - it’s in a little strip mall tucked behind Churches Chicken at 35th Ave. and Cactus. But it’s clean, and everybody is helpful and pleasant. Ken gave a happy whoop when he saw Cheese Curds ($2.49/$4.49) on the menu. We decided to get an order while waiting for our friends Randy and Marty to join us. The curds came quickly out of the kitchen, piping hot, served with some tasty homemade marinara. They were a touch greasy, as they should be, and the oil was fresh. Marty and Randy arrived in time to save us from ourselves by helping to finish off the curds. Then we took a while trying to make our selections from the extensive menu. Eventually Randy and I both went for the New Yorker: pastrami with homemade slaw and thousand island dressing ($2.99, $3.99 or $4.99). Ken had a homemade-meatball sub, with more of that good marinara and some provolone. It was the same price structure as our New Yorkers and all the rest of the entries under Classic Subs and Sandwiches. Marty went with a double burger ($3.89, the singles are $1 less). He could have opted for a Rocket Burger - !0 inch sub with three burgers and the fixings in either plain, cheese, bacon, teriyaki, or chili style ($4.99 to $5.99). Of course we had to try the fries and onion rings. Again our food arrived quickly, served in plastic baskets. It became very quiet, except for the occasional growl of pleasure. The onion rings ($1.99) had been dipped in a thin cornmeal batter which made them nice and crunchy. The handcut fries ($1.49) were skinny, the way I like them. Randy thought they were undersalted, but I thought they were fine - our usual disagreement. At any rate, they disappeared quickly. Unlike the sandwiches. They were so big that we all ended up taking half of each sub home. The slaw on the New Yorkers was delicious, as was my whole wheat sub roll. The meat balls were nice and tender, and there was plenty of cheese on top. Randy had found a bottle of ginger beer imported from Australia that had a wonderfully refreshing true ginger taste. There seemed to be actual pieces of ginger in it - instructions on the label said to invert the bottle before opening. It never did tell you to turn it right side up again - the Aussies give us more credit than we deserve. Other food items available: Hebrew National hot dogs in several styles ($2.49), Pizza Bread with various toppings, Gyros ($3.69), salads ($1.99 - $3.99), a fish sandwich ($2.49) served with homemade tartar sauce. And lots more. I don’t know how Dennis and Steve manage to turn out food of this quality for so little money, but I surely do hope they continue and prosper!

Thought Id try something new and not too far away from home. Upon entering, the layout reminded me of old stores in Mexico. I was greeted be very friendly staff. I was amazed at the 9 refrigerators full of all types of bottles of soda. My sons would have a hay day there trying them. I almost bought a Butterscotch flavored soda called Rocket Piss just for the name. They even had fountain craft sodas in 5 different flavors such as black cherry and snozzberry. Tasty! The food seemed a little high priced, but the portions were big. I ordered a cheeseburger and the patty was too thin in comparison to the bun. The bun was tasty and soft. I tried their homemade "Rocket Sauce," which was thousand island dressing and IDK what else. Green spicy specks. Yuck! I didnt like it. My 17 y/o didnt like it. He thought the bacon in his burger tasted strange. He ordered fries which was a separate cost and the flavor reminded him of Wingstop fries. I ordered onion rings, which had some odd flavoring sprinkled on them and were super salty! Not recommended for those with high blood pressure! They smelled weird ( Im sure it was the flavoring). What I did like was that they cut holes in the containers to let the steam out, which kept them from getting wilty and wet. Great job there! When I got home I realized a sandwich was missing so I had to go back to pick that up. They were apologetic about that. Friendly staff made my visit better than if I would have based this solely on food taste. Will go back to try sodas, but will never order food there again.

Definitely a hidden food gem in the heart of Chandler worth exploring! I got a Gyro Burger with fries on the side and a bottle of ginger ale. This place lives up to its name; that burger exploded in my mouth with beefy lamb flavor when I flew it in! It also wasnt too overwhelming because the burger included tomatoes and cucumbers to cut back on the rich, savory explosion from the beef patties and gyro meat. Just when I thought the food in this restaurant is great, I also learned the atmosphere is friendly, too. Steve, the owner, approached my friend and me while we were chowing down. We had a really pleasant conversation, and apparently Rocket Burger has been open for only 4 months now. Yet this place was the first result when I simply Yelped for Food in Chandler, AZ. If you ask me, thats a pretty impressive feat, to say the least. When I come back, Im getting the Green Chile Burger. I gotta get me that extra crunchy, yet still juicy experience from the fried chili inside. Maybe Ill even get it Rocket-sized.

ALL THESE REVIEWS ARE LIES!! This stuff is NOT HOMEMADE, its LOCALLY MADE. This was the worst place Ive been to in my life. My husband got a New York pastrami sub and I got The Big Dipper. When they brought the food over it smelled weird. I took a bite and it tasted as bad as it smelled. I had to force down half my sub only because we spent 20 bucks on two 10" subs, fries, a soda and a slushie for my 3 y.o. The slushie (which was cherry) tasted like medicine. My daughter took a sip and said straight out "its awful!" Thankfully I was able to trade it in for a soda. Their coleslaw was edible, but not spectacular. The fries were the only thing that we actually liked, but big whoop. And the whole "1 order of fries is enough for two people" NOT if youre grown and hungry. Maybe to split between toddlers. I DO NOT recommend wasting your money here.

I was really surprised by this burger joint. The first thing that really strikes me is the visual appearance of the restaurant. There are soda bottles in the windows in a rainbow of colors. Its beautiful. The place is small, but this is a nice touch that makes it a little magical. My wife and I liked our food, but the thing that really impressed me with their to-go service: they cut a hole in the box that held the fries. This kept them from getting too moist while we drove home. Another nice touch thats so obvious, but no one has ever done before. Quality is high and the price is very agreeable. You wont spend much more than going to a commercial spot and youll get a better meal and a better experience. The only thing that kept it from 5 stars is that the place is small. Serious. its small. But its nice small. But still, its small.
