Its unfortunate that some people translate the owners Japanese stoicism as his being a jerk. Hes not a jerk or a "dick" - he is just a man of few words. And thats perfectly fine because the food is awesome and authentic. I grew up in Japan and I guarantee that the food here tastes exactly like what I grew up eating. Its not gourmet cooking - its more like home cooking which is perfect. When I get home sick and I just dont have the time to cook at home, this is where I go. The price isnt bad at all. If you want to know whats real Japanese food tastes like (no, we dont eat raw fish everyday), you need to check this place out. All those so called fast food Japanese restaurants like Kyoto Bowl or Tokyo Express? Theyre not Japanese food but rather what foreigners would perceive Japanese food to be. Seriously, if you go in understanding that the owner does not talk a lot, youll be able to focus on the taste of the food, which is awesome!!

I severely disappointed in myself for not coming sooner, like 4 years ago sooner when I moved. I live 1000 ft from the place and pass by it every day. I got a craving for noodles and this place came up in my search. The beef udon is delicious and the tuna roll was perfect. The owner is very polite and super nice. I just found my new favorite Japanese restaurant. The prices are great and I am all around completely satisfied. Zero complaints. Thank you Toh Zan. If you want delicious Japanese food and youre in this area, look no further. Do not judge the building /location, just go and enjoy.

I had lunch here today with a friend around 1pm, and it was empty, except for one or two parties. However, I felt reassured when I realized the owner was Japanese. I ordered the Katsu-don and my friend ordered the unagi don off the lunch menu, so both of our orders were each under $10. Really reasonable, especially with the addition of miso soup, salad, and dumpling & chicken skewer. We both ate everything - we were super hungry but the meal was also really good. Decor is alright - pretty outdated, but the food was great, so I cant complain too much. I would definitely come back!

This place should be recognized more. For the ones that say he has an attitude, its merely just his age and the lack of business. Think of it as your grandfather. Out of all the Japanese restaurants Ive been to in Arizona, this is probably the one I like most. Makes me feel like im back in San Jose, Cali with my family. I come from a japanese family, so the food i tasted here felt homemade. Miso soup didnt taste like the pre-made package crap either. I would recommend this place to anyone. This man seems to be loosing a lot of business, and i think he deserves more.

Nice service and all, food is nothing really special. Ive been here 3 different times and tried 3 different dishes. Spicy ramen, miso ramen, and seafood crockpot. Food tasted plain, no flavor unless you bite down on the shrimp,Good part about it I still got full from the whole meal and it comes with this rice dessert. Place is small and old, hot no air conditioning inside. tables booth is uncomfortable. Not sure if Ill come back

Service was not friendly or helpful. Many items have no description. The sushi was very average and there were minimal options. The calimari in the calimari salad had a very odd texture, unlike any calamari I have ever eaten. Left me wondering what I had really eaten. How on earth did this place get such high ratings? I chose this place based on past ratings and was sorely disappointed. I can normally rely on google ratings.

The food is ok but the man who took my order is EXTREMELY RUDE!!!! I felt very rushed when ordering and was made to feel like was somehow bothering him by dining in. It was to the point that when I was leaving I said to him with enthusiasm "have a nice day" just to see what his response would be He literally just grunted back at me. I just stared at him with the look of a deer in headlights in disbelief.

I am not Japanese but I lived in Tokyo for some time so I am probably spoiled... Had the Gyudon. It was pretty good. I travelled from Phoenix so it was a total of 1 hour driving. I make a much better Gyudon homemade so I would only return here if I was in the area because the meal comes with gyoza, salad, and miso soup, so its a very good deal. But the food could be better if I am honest.

The place has not been upkeep since 1983, the guy behind the counter was NOT friendly, barely greet us when we came in not even cracked a smile, very impatient, he asked whether we are ready to order within 2 minutes. We probably put up with him if the food was good, it was not. It was an okay food, definitely not authentic. We will not come back.

Tucked away in an unassuming building, is great authentic Japanese food! It truly is a hidden gem. You wouldnt expect it from the building, or the furniture/decor inside, but this is truly fresh and delicious. The owner is getting older and was talking about retiring soon, so go local and support this amazing little restaurant before its gone!

My girlfriend went here today for lunch, and they self-tipped themselves to the tune of $13.79 on a bill of $19.45 - a 70% tip!!! That is !@#! ridiculous!! Where do they get off thinking they can charge whatever amount they want for the tip. If I could give negative stars I would. Hope they enjoy the extra money they swindled from me.

Great Japanese food. Has home style dishes. Husband and wife team run the place. Husband runs front of house and helps in the back while wife handles back of the house. Since husband does dual service you may need to walk by the kitchen to ask for more water. Food is 5 stars. Service is 2 to 3 stars. Ambiance is 3 stars.

I have never had such a poor experience. Very dirty and unclean building. The food was gross, the drinking water had the worst smell and was served in old stained plastic cups. I paid for my meal and my sons after about 3 bites taken and left. I dont know how it has so many positive reviews, this blows me away.

I have been eating here since it was Happy Bowl Samurai in Tempe. It is a hole-in-the-wall mom and pop shop with fantastic food. They also serve food at the Matsuri every year. Definitely worth a visit if you like teriyaki chicken, ramen, udon, that sort of thing.

This place is awesome! The food is superb and always made fresh. A small mom and pop shop! Love the couple who run it ^,^ Only complaint I have is the atmosphere, its always too quite I feel like I have to whisper when im there. Get some music playing!

Like others have mentioned there are no servers here and the 2 polite quiet employees spend most of their time keeping to themselves in the back cooking or cleaning so the service can be a little lacking, but the food is still good.
