Im sorry to give any restaurant one star, but I really thought about this and didnt feel it deserved more. My husband and I have been looking for a good Chinese restaurant here in Mesa since we moved down here from Laveen. We used to go to Sun Asian in Phoenix and they are fantastic. Ill preface this by saying Im from New York originally and nothing out here matches the Chinese food back in NY, so Im always on the quest for good Chinese food. We went to Golden Gate because we read so many good reviews of it on Google. The decor is very pretty and its a nice, sit down Chinese restaurant. Its dimly lit and they have nice little booths and tables. Its got more of an intimate setting. I wasnt very hungry so I ordered some wonton soup, an egg roll and a spare rib appetizer. My husband ordered the Szechuan Chicken. My wonton soup came out first. A tiny cup with what was pretty much just hot water with a few small wontons in it and.....canned mushrooms. The soup had absolutely no taste and was nearly colorless. I really think it was hot water. I couldnt believe they had canned mushrooms in it. What good restaurant uses canned mushrooms? They cant even slice a fresh mushroom? After a few tastes of the completely tasteless soup, my egg roll arrived. Burned on both ends and completely overcooked. I was barely able to cut it. I will say that the filling wasnt terrible, but it wasnt great either. Mostly chopped Chinese cabbage and bean sprouts. That was also tasteless. My husband was still waiting for his dinner when the ribs arrived. Four large spare ribs covered in an orange sauce, lying on a bed of shredded lettuce with a few sesame seeds sprinkled on top. The ribs were also very over cooked and tough. The first bite I took I was barely able to tear the meat off the bone. Although the taste wasnt bad....it wasnt great either. Basically other then the orange flavored sauce on top, they were tasteless. My husbands dinner arrived and it was all orange also. It had slices of chicken, large pieces of green pepper, pea pods and bamboo shoots. It came with a container of steamed white rice. He dished himself up some rice and there was a pea in it. Hmmmm, did they reuse someone elses rice or did the pea accidentally get in there? Anyway, on to the Szechuan Chicken. After a few bites my husband said it was "ok, not great". My husband will eat pretty much anything, so I was surprised to hear him say this. He did eat quite a bit of it (not unusual for him, lol) but at the end of the meal he said he really didnt like it. He said the chicken was basically tasteless (there seems to be a recurring theme here). He said he was eating it waiting for the taste to get better, but it never did. He said the sauce was basically an orange sauce that they put a little bit of red pepper in to spice it up. He said it didnt taste home made, it tasted like it came out of a jar. For dessert, when you get your check, they bring you two fried little flat wonton wrappers with a bit of banana inside and some confectioners sugar on top. I will say that those were good. The service was very good, wait staff very friendly and kind, and atmosphere was nice, but due to the lack of flavor and freshness in the food and the burnt food, I have to only give them one star. Sorry Golden Gate!

The service was excellent and the waitresses were beautifully dressed and surroundings were clean and tastefully decorated. We were served hot tea and water immediately. They have very reasonable lunch specials that are served on Saturdays. Shortly after ordering, our soup, fried wontons, and egg rolls arrived. The fried wontons were a bit overdone for my taste, but the egg roll fillings tasted very fresh...kind of like a fried spring roll. I had Kung Pao chicken, my husband had Yu Shang chicken, and both daughters had Orange Chicken. I thought the Kung Pao chicken was very good. My husband liked the Yu Shang chicken, but thought it could have been spicier (he likes his food very spicy). I had a taste of the Orange Chicken and thought it bland, but our daughters said they liked it. Servings were ample and our daughters only ate about half of theirs. Very nice dining experience for an excellent price!

I LOVE this place! Ive been eating at Golden Gate for years and they never disappoint. Theyre really reasonably priced and give you a lot of food. Much better than P.F.Changs (not that PF Changs is bad but theyre a little overpriced and you get less food, youre paying for atmosphere imo). Golden Gate is a bit outdated on the inside and most of their waitresses dont speak much english, but dont let that stop you from going! The waitresses are really nice and always quick to refill drinks. The food is amazing, Ive never had anything there I didnt like. Ive taken all of my friends there and they love it as well. They also have really good/fun alcoholic drinks. If youre looking for great chinese that wont break the bank this is definitely the place for you!

I called to place an order 45 minutes in advance. When I got there I gave them my name & 14 minutes later I was asked again after 2 orders were filled after my arrival. So I sent in my fiance in who happen to be white and then the order was filled in 3 minutes! Hate the service! Not a friendly place for dark colored people. Do your self a favor & time & spend your $$money & time elsewhere! Update : We opened the bag and it was all wet and soaked with the sauce from the BBQ pork dish! What an awful way to celebrate New Years with such a bad meal. The fried rice has no taste, the puff wonton s a horrible. Geez! And the food was cold when I arrived home, which is less than 10 minutes away.

Amazing service. Great food. You really cant beat the lunch prices for what you get. With lunch you get HotSour Soup or Egg drop soup along with fried wontons while you wait for your meal. Tub of rice. Hot Tea. Entree is served on a plate all by itself. This allows you to put a small portion on to your plate along with the amount of rice you would like. then you can share it with whomever you go to lunch with there. Sue the owner is awesome. Every time we have been here for dinner, Sue is sure to stop by our table to say hello. Nice atmosphere to take the wife for a quiet chinese dinner. Really tough to find these smaller shops that offer such great food and service.

Definitely would go again. The staff goes above and beyond to accommodate various needs without extra charge and are sweet as can be. I love Lemon chicken but cant have breaded foods so I was a little disheartened but the hostess (we ordered take-out) suggested I get steamed chicken and veggies and they would but the lemon sauce on the side for me. I have never been to a restaurant that cares more for their customers than Golden Gate. The order was ready in 10 minutes even with the customization and their food is excellent! I 100% recommend this place for both sit down and take-out, I know it is my favorite.
