Updated Review: Great Improvement! Great Food, Great Service, Good Happy Hour! Im really glad I gave this place another few tries! The Carlsbad Beef Brochettes were wonderful, except that I will request next time that they not be prepared well done. The portion was huge - enough for two - and I loved the dipping sauces. The prickly pear margarita was delicious! Even better, everything was on Happy Hour prices! Ive had less than great experiences here in the past, but whatever was causing the issues has clearly been handled. We also loved the Filet Quesadilla which we had on a visit a few days earlier. Old Review: Great Ambiance, Inconsistent Food...” Ive visited The Carlsbad Tavern off and on over the years, and I REALLY want to be able to like it unconditionally. The drinks are good, I LOVE the ambiance, and the service, while varied, is generally good. This is a great place to have a drink or two and just enjoy being where you are. My challenge here has always been the food. I wont refer back to past food disappointments, but once again on my last visit during a busy happy hour, the meat in my Angus Beef Filet Mignon Tacos was dry, and in some instances hard. No matter how great the atmosphere, even if Im getting happy hour priced food, basic quality standards should be in place.

Summary: Take friends from out of town for the experience, but also make sure to take them to some great Phoenix Mexican while theyre here. Food - 3.5 stars I went alone and got stacked enchiladas. The sauce was really good, although the chicken had some tough, overly poultry-tasting bits. Rice was good, black beans (a personal favorite of mine) were somewhat bland and lacking. As this place is close to my house, I would probably come back to scratch a New Mexican itch, but I cant imagine driving far for the food alone. Price - 3 stars Food here is definitely on the costly end for Mexican food. Its not out of line for downtown Scottsdale, but then, the restaurant isnt downtown. Service - 4 stars No complaints here. I was in late, so it was super quiet, but the staff was friendly while not bugging me every two seconds. They gave me two optional checks (i.e. checking in on me without food or drink in hand), which is perfect in my mind. Decor - 5 stars There are not a whole restaurants in the Phoenix area that are legitimate tourist attractions. This is definitely one. Its kitschy, funny, and totally oddball, but I loved that. The restaurant has features sprinkled throughout it, with decor themes flowing one into the other.

The atmosphere is really unique but our overall experience was not great. The waitress was rude and snobby. The sliders were awful and she didnt think to mention how hot they would be (spice wise). As a waitress she should have at least mentioned that item was a 10 on the spicy scale. When we expressed our dissatisfaction with them she replied tartly with " there were warnings on the main menu.." well we ordered of the happy hour menu and there were not warnings on that menu. She laughed, didnt apologies for the confusion didnt take the item off the bill or give us anything to sub out for it. It was a bad first impression of a restaurant. On top of that the food was expensive and in my book if the food is expensive the wait staff had better be exceptional along with the quality of the food. I would NOT recommend this restaurant. Unless of course you like the wait staff treating you as if you were less then them, A+ for Snobbsdale!! WOOT WOOT

Cool atmosphere hiding in south Scottsdale. Carlsbad Tavern is a fun, local gem that is a perfect spot for locals & tourists alike. Modern, New Mexico entrees fill the menu. Each one is delicious & spicy. My personal favorite is the Enchanted Platter. Or go with Carne Adovada Plate. Both have great New Mexican flavors. The drink menu has beer, wine & hip/trendy cocktails. I enjoyed a few of the different "mule" drinks offered. My wife is a fried ice cream fan and loved the dessert here. The crispy outside included coconut shavings that added an extra layer of sweetness. The shell surrounded delicious dulce de leche ice cream. All around a great choice.

I found this establishment online looking for a place to grab some food after 11pm and was pleasantly surprised. The service was top notch and the bartender never let a glass go empty. The late night menu has a lot of good options. I had the Grilled Quesadilla and loved it. This is a great place with a relaxing atmosphere, that is if you dont mind eating in a cave like bar which I thought was a very unique and fun atmosphere. My only criticism would be to invest in a more visual sign. I had to do 2 passes to find it, but it was well worth the search All in all, a great place to eat late in Scottsdale with very reasonable drink and food pricing

Today my mother and I stopped in for a late lunch. I felt awful for the server because he was all alone and not able to provide the service to the patrons. Although the food was tasty, the service was terrible. The server was so stressed that he threw one of our meals on the table and we were thankfully not burned or covered in the food, but it did come off the plate. Once again, I felt bad for the server and the management did nothing to assist the server with the overload of customers. We tried to locate the manager and he was unavailable to speak to us. The food was good, but not that good. We wont be returning or recommending the restaurant.

On the recommendation of a family member who hadnt been here since the restaurant opened about 22 years ago, we made a point of visiting on our vacation to the Southwest. Very glad to have made the trip. Table favorites were the Habanero Sliders, Veggie Enchilada, Red River Chicken, and Sopapillas with honey. I enjoyed the Cavern Chicken Salad which was loaded with juicy cilanto-lime chicken and had a sweet barbecue drizzle that was a nice touch. A special thanks to Natalie for her hospitality! She went out of her way to make sure we were well taken care of. Good prices, good service, good food!

I usually take a group of people here so the service is very important. The ambiance is incredible but can be a little stifling in the summer as there is breeze because you are below the ground if you sit outside. I like the spin on the traditional Mexican and American foods because of the New Mexico flavors. Kids might think Mac and Cheese sounds good, but Carlsbads is spiced up with chiles and many kids arent happy with the new flavor. I recommend the nachos and the burgers. The spiced up ones are the best, but the traditional ones will not disappoint either.

JUDITH A. MERRITT, I HAVE GONE TO CARLSBAD OFTEN, BUT NEVER AGAIN!!! I MUST SAY THAT I WAS A HUGE FAN OF CARLSBAD TAVERN BEFORE MY MOST RECENT VISIT. FOOD TASTED NO BETTER THAN "TACO BELL"...HMMMM OK IT WAS A TAD BIT BETTER AT BEST. SERIOUSLY, DONT WASTE YOUR $ HERE. A CHEAP LUNCH IS GOING TO RUN $40 AND THE FOOD IS NOT PREPARED FRESH. MOST FOOD IS LEFT OVER, LIKE THE CARNE ADOVADA..THE CHIPS AND SALSA ARE GOOD , BUT BE PREPARED TO SHELL OUT SOME CASH...ITS LIKE PAYING FOR BREAD OR REFILLS....WHO CHARGES FOR THAT? CARLSBAD TAVERN THATS WHO
