my wife and I had dinner here just now and now we are sick. the chefs were very nice and good but they need to find a better place to work. the food quality is very cheap. this is the worst sushi I have ever had. the squid salad was fishy and left a nasty taste in our mouths. the fish was bad and smelled. even the avacado was bad. the seaweed that was used was both dry and chewy at the same time. got a spider role and that even stunk and taste fishy. the roles are half the size of actual roles and half way through the night they ran out of rice. my Wasabi that was given to me dried into a play dough in less than 45 seconds. I ordered ice water and got water from a tap, not even filtered. they used tap water for my wifes green tea and that was not even tea, they used a powder mix that stuck to her straw. those who say this place was good dont know what sushi is. smaller and more expensive does not better or higher quality. not ever going here again. dont blame the chefs because they are working with what the owners give them. one more thing for the owners... when you blowtorch your sushi, it just tast like gas fumes. what person does not know that uncooked fish captures the flavors of everything? why the hell are you gas lighting anything that has to do with sushi? totally wasted my money on poor food that I now am sick because of. avoid this place. it looks pretty but it comes with a price.

I frequent many sushi bars in the area and I would not recommend this place at all. My usual meal at every sushi restaurant is a chirashi bowl and a spicy tuna roll. A chirashi bowl is a bowl of mixed sashimi on a bed of rice. For me it is always a good way to determine just how good the sushi restaurant because this bowl has almost every type of sashimi you find on their menus - albacore, tuna, salmon, squid, egg, yellowtail, tuna belly, fish eggs, etc. Now concerning Shimogamo, not only were the portions very small for both the chirashi bowl and the spicy tuna roll, there was absolutely no flavor in the fish, neither did it look fresh. They charge high prices here -the chirashi bowl was $25, the spicy tuna roll was $6.25. The rice in the chirashi bowl was also dry, hard, and not cooked properly to be sushi rice I would recommend going to Sakana, specifically the location in ahwatukee. Portions are good sized, the fish is fresh, has flavor, and prices are reasonable. A chirashi bowl at Sakana is $16 while a spicy tuna roll is about $6. Also they are always consistent here, which is a huge factor in Japanese restaurants. If you dont believe give Shimogamo a shot, Sakana in ahwatukee a shot, and then youll realize how much time, money, and effort youve wasted.

I have been here twice for their happy hour. I will have to say it is one of the best sushi I have ever had. I went there with a group of friends so we had an opportunity to try a bunch of food. The Japanese fried chicken was very good. The pork belly appetizer was also very good, it was very moist and sweet. For those that dont enjoy raw sushi then the Vegas roll is a very good option. The fatty tuna sushi was pretty good but was simply not as satisfying as the salmon sushi, it had a good portion of fat that just melted in my mouth. The home-made ice-cream was a mix of coconut and another flavour I dont quite recall. The ice-cream was a very great way to end the meal. I also got to try the custard filled crepe and was also pretty good just not as great as the ice-cream.

I saw all the good reviews about this place and mention it to the girls since we were planning a sushi girls night. We all agreed we like to try something new. My sister, best friend and I arrived there first around 6:45 pm. We went in and waited for a few awkward minutes. We then saw an older Asian man coming from the back to seat us. He asked if it was for 3 and I informed him no 4 more friends were coming. He looked at me and said "sorry no room" I was in shock because I have never heard this before. He said next time call for a reservation. We said thank you and left. Didnt get to try the sushi everyone was raving about. Just wanted to let you guys know if its more the 3 people its best to call a save a spot.

Not sure what KosherRiceBuritos motive was in leaving that review. If hes suggesting this is not authentic maybe he went on the one day out of the year that the place isnt full up of Japanese Americans. Judging this restaurant based on one dish seems loony. The food here is wonderful. Thats why guests can see all the "Best Of" awards on their wall. The ambiance is the closest thing to metropolitan in feel that Ive found anywhere in the Valley. The fish is fresh, just take a look at the daily, flown-in specials. My Husband and I drive 40 miles to have sushi here. The sushi might be a dollar more per roll here, but once youre here, you understand why.

Ill get to the point, food here is okay. You wont be impressed, you wont be disappointed. The place is small so you might have to wait to be seated. The art on walls has so much dust and dirt that I dont think its ever been cleaned since this place open. Service is okay, if you need something chances are youll be waiting 5-10 minutes for server to come back. All in all the sushi wasnt terrible, I would call it mediocre, but Im sure some rolls on the menu I didnt try could have been good. The menu has no images so you better know what different rolls are with your own research. Im not a sushi pro so it was a guessing game for me.

I stumbled across this establishment while searching for another great sushi bar to enjoy and had a sour experience from the moment I sat down. The place is loud and cramped even at half occupancy. The sushi chefs wore gloves, but constantly touched his face, glasses or other things completely destroying the purpose. I ordered several nigiri and found the amount and quality of the rice to be severely lacking. Everything was overpriced for the quality and amount of the food. The two good things this bar had going was the quality of fish and location.

If a particular fish isnt fresh at the market that day then the owner wont buy it. He is a man that takes pride in his restaurant and only the best will be selected to represent him. I never knew I was eating mediocre sushi before because I hadnt tasted REAL QUALITY. That was until I discovered this inconspicuous gem and learned what sushi is SUPPOSED to taste like. This place has ruined me for sushi because no other place can compare. I highly recommend the escolar if they have it. There is no finer cut of fish.

The service from the staff was great, very friendly. The chefs were doing the best they could with the low quality ingredients at their disposal. The soft shell crab in my spider roll tasted fishy and charred. The water used for my iced green tea was tap water with a powder mix. My husbands rainbow roll is not sitting well with him now. And to top it all off, they ran out of rice! I feel bad for the staff, bad owners. Being stingy to make a buck makes quality drop.
