Place has gone downhill. I dont plan to return. Was hassled by management for no good reason today about multiple aspects of my order. One similar to I what have been making for years now. I only go there for the VIP program which has been recently watered down and does not allow for discounts on nigiri, only for maki rolls. This is their 3rd chance. A few years ago my daughter and I would go there about once a week and one time she found a hair complete with some sort of hide or flesh attached (human or otherwise) in her miso and we received no apology, no refund for the miso and not even a replacement of the dish. We started calling them the "harry sumo" and vowed not to return. Then my son started going to the U and wanted to go there for sushi so we gave it another try. Things were great until they changed the VIP program. We vowed not to return again but thought we would try other things on the menu instead. Now the service is generally not as good as it used to be with many new waitstaff that dont know us or our needs. It was painfully obvious that the manager would prefer that we dont return and is not interested in our business. Without the VIP program this place is way overpriced for the quality of the sushi. Its just an average place. The other food there is also just average.

Overpriced- and the food was bad. I paid for a $20 new york steak- "samari steak" and got a steak so fatty and tough that trying to chew a tiny piece made my jaws sore- couldnt eat it. It was also freezer burned. I talked to the waitress and she said "well our steaks arent high quality, maybe if I put more sauce on it?" This after she reccomended it as the best they had. I sent it back and asked for more sauce if that could help- and it was actually worse this time! Both of our dished had BURNED and uncooked rice parts. Rice- you know its so hard to make. We wasted $50 at this place which had lower quality food than and $1 menu fast food out there. Dont waste your money! My husbands sushi was only so so. Service: Our waitress hung out talking to friends right behind us but didnt refill drinks. Atmo: given bad seating and loud. Value: $50 meal for 2 with as noted by the waitress and observed by us- worse quality food than its $4 counterparts elsewhere. They ruined the overpriced food and didnt even apologize for it. Never coming back. Ruined our night. Subsisted on water and what not burned rice bits and veggies I could find. Maybe our dog might eat it....

I love the sushi Yummy sushi and its very reasonably priced (half price) if you get on their VIP e-mail list (dont worry its only one e-mail a month, no newsletter or any sushi updates). They took my favorite roll off the menu but every time I go, they are kind enough to make it for me. It was the Mojo roll, mmmmmmmhhhmmmm. The service is always friendly and nice, sometimes bordering on smug and the atmosphere seems ripped out of a magazine. The tables are quite close together and its pretty loud when the house is packed. Its best to get a booth for a party of people but prepare for a wait. The bar is very nice to just hop on up to and down a couple rolls before a Jazz game or Movie. Bottom Line: Love the food, dont mind the service, atmosphere needs work and make sure to print out the VIP coupon so your bill isnt astronomical. (I believe you have to ask for the VIP menu as well)

Im pretty disappointed with the management here and how they treat customers. We were told we had a table at 8:15PM and they seated us slightly before. Not usually something to complain about, but the manager informed us after being seated and served water that we couldnt use the VIP coupon as it could only be used after 8PM. We said that wed just wait the 7 minutes to order (it was 7:53 at that point). First, she told us that the time we put in our order would have to be after 8, but later changed her story and said it was based on the time we were seated. The manager told us wed have to leave and be re-seated after 8PM to use it. Rather than jump back in line to be seated again, we opted to leave. That kind of customer service is just sad. Takashi was way better, anyway.

Their appetizer of freshly cooked Soy Beans is amazing, for those that havent tried it.. Its worth it and definitely flavorful. Everything I have eaten there has been amazing. The only downside is the fact that they changed the way they make their green tea. It used to be much more flavorful and fresh. Now it seems they order pre-sealed tea bags rather than filling their own. Definitely worth the wait. IF YOU GO WHEN ITS BUSY, READ THIS: Call ahead. If you enjoy walking around the mall, which many of us do, walk up if they are busy and get your cell number put on their waiting list. They will call you when your table is ready, which I find very convenient since you dont have to wait in the crowd for 10-45 minutes if its busy.

I went here for my friend’s birthday because Takashi could not fit the party of 10 in that night. Happy Sumo got us in even though it was a busy night and were great to us we had a couple late arrivers and the waitress was very nice about it. Some of the girls were new to sushi and the waitress was great to educate them and make suggestions that would be good to their tastes. Everyone enjoyed their meals and I had the Baked Lobster Roll and I thought I had died and gone to heaven it was so delicious!! I am going this Saturday for my birthday with the same girls plus a few more and I cannot wait! We are going to the Cottonwood Heights location so I really hope they are as great as the one at Gateway!

Easily some of the best sushi I have ever had. Excellent variety of different rolls and if you belong to their club, the prices arent bad either. Tempura vegetables are good and the miso soup is really tasty as well. I have dined at the Provo and SLC locations and both have superb chefs and well trained and friendly wait staff. I would not recommend going on a Friday or Saturday however because it can get extremely busy and youll have to wait a long time for your rolls.

Im currently sitting in the restaurant and have been for 10 minutes. My waitress has yet to come to my table, but its not even busy night currently. As ive seen 3 waitress standing around waiting to help all the other tables except mine. A table of 4 was just sat next to me and the waitress came and took drink orders for them but didnt even greet me. This is absolutely a joke because i love Happy Sumo and have never had an experience like this before.

We went here last weekend for our anniversary date and we loved it! We have been to the Provo one before, and it was 5 stars too. The service was really great, they didnt bug us too much, but also attended to our needs really well. The food was delicious and very well-prepared, especially with how much care they take in making the plates look really nice! They fill up your place, and the pricing is great. My husband loves their sushi!
