I have a friend from England visiting this week, so my boyfriend and I wanted to try a Madison restaurant that wed never been to before. We decided on North and South. I was very surprised upon arrival. It wasnt quite what I expected, but it was fantastic. The waitress we had was fantastic. I missed her name, but she had purple hair and long black nails- she was awesomely fashionable. I ordered the nachos with chicken, they were amazing. Smokey and flavorful with heaps to eat. Both of my guys got fish dishes and loved their meals. My visitor had never tried squash before and that was one of his sides- he ate everything on his plate! We also got cheese curds- our visitors first taste of them. I think hes hooked, we may start a trend in England! It was my birthday yesterday, as well as my friends, and my boyfriend asked the server if they do anything special. They do! We had the BEST fried ice cream ice ever had (and my friends first try of it, ever) the chips served with the ice cream were scrumptious- super flaky and cinnamon/sugar coated. We also got the.. Muddy pie I think it was called. Both the boys loved it, it was too rich for me, but I was glad to sacrifice it for more icecream, haha. Im typing this as I snack on my leftover nachosin the back seat of my car- theyre just as good cold! I wanted to thank our server for being so awesome, and the restaurant for their great atmosphere. Well definitely be visiting again soon!

A couple weeks ago I found Joeys looking for some fresh fried seafood in Madison WI. I was greeted and seated by Julianna, who steered me to just the right dish I was looking for. I travel quite a bit and eat mostly organic and or natural foods so you can imagine how few restaurants meet those criteria or come close with freshness and flavor. I also enjoy a meal whose size portions dont make me loose my appetite when brought to the table. Im not looking for a Man vs Food battle, just a meal thats pleasing to the senses before it meet the pallet. And for me Joeys was that place Sept 22. I had wild rice with a salad that I couldnt keep my fork away from, fried shrimp and a delectably breaded fillet of Haddock I believe. The portions were perfect, seasoned just right, fresh and delicious. I promised Julianna I would write a review so other travelers who are looking for wonderfully done seafood are also informed of whats happening at Joeys. So heres to Joeys and Julianna..., thanks for the best meal I had in Madison WI!

We did go try out the DeForest location about a week ago. I was very happy to see broasted chicken on the menu. The choices were either 2 or 4 piece. I ordered the 4 piece for an extra $3.50. When it arrived I was somewhat surprised as I received a thigh, drumstick, and two wings. No breast. It is pretty much an unwritten restaurant rule that a 2 pieces is either a thigh/drumstick combination, or a wing/breast combination and a four piece is one of each piece. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she went and checked with the kitchen and was told that it goes by weight. If that was the case, a breast would never be sold. I hope this was a mix up of some sort or just a new location getting going issue, as I am looking forward to the 10 piece carry out option on Sundays, but I am worried I will get 10 wings in the bucket. But besides that item, it is a very nice restaurant and atmosphere and I do plan on going to try some other entree items. I hope they do well in DeForest.

We came in for appetizers - we got crab cakes ($11.00) and fried pickles ($7.00) and a couple cocktails. The service was great, you are greeted by several people and everyone seemed energetic. Id give the pickles a 7 out of 10, and the crab cakes a 4 out of 10. Pickles were pretty good, but there is no way those are fresh crab cakes, they are incredibly flat and look as though they came right from a box. I would give customers at least 3 crab cakes for $11.00 if I continued to serve those ones specifically- the taste as a whole was okay, but having the word "Seafood" in your restaurant name, they may want to look at upping their quality on that item. My fiance asked for a second cocktail and the bartender made my drink for him instead so I ended up drinking it, no biggy - she was very nice about it and removed it from the bill. I would likely come back to try a meal of some sort in the future.

Food was very good. I had the fish and chip (cod) with red beans and rice. The fish was not oily or soggy. Nor was it over cooked. It was a nice suprise to find a place that knows how to make fish and chips right. The fries were not season in the kitchen, but that is fine. So used to having fries (chips) being overly salty. So this was very nice. The red beans and rice was delisious...like a vegitarian chilly. Wish they would have taked the bay leaf out befor serving it. The waiter, who was very attentive, was super kind and curtious and not pushy. Would I recomend them? Oh, HECK YES! As I said, it is nice to have a place in town that isnt all about frozen, under preparied, imporperly cook fish and a wait staff that actualy knew how to be curtious, attentive, and not pushy or overly baring/rude.

My girlfriend and I went here for lunch on Valentines Day. Enjoyed it so much that we decided to come back for dinner with my parents the next Saturday. Our first time out we tried "The Austin" which is a combo of ribs, brisket and pulled pork and the breaded "firecracker" shrimp which has an absolutely mouthwatering sweet sauce. Next time I had the New Orleans jambalaya which was excellent and my parents each had the prime rib. They both enjoyed it and I will defer to their judgement since they are prime rib connoisseurs. They also pay attention to the side items here, the seasonal vegetables were cooked just right and they do the mashed potatoes right with bits of skin and chives. No excuses. GO HERE!!!

Since moving to Madison last summer Joeys was our favorite place to eat (emphasis on was). They recently introduced a new menu which seems to be more about reducing portion sizes than anything else. They no longer offer cornbread muffins with your meal. The ahi tacos no longer come with 2 sides but rather with some chips and some chopped up tomato and onion which I guess they think is salsa. The tacos used to be packed with ahi now you get one or two small pieces. We used to leave filled up. Now its like you just had an appetizer. Raising prices would have been a better option than this drastic cut back. Sorry Joey we wont be back.

Overall poor experience. There seemed to be a general lack of caring going on by Host, Server, and the Kitchen Staff. A friend had the grilled halibut, and it came out looking a mess. The fish was cut in small pieces, and was thrown on the plate with no real care. The taste didn’t help the fact, as there was a general lack of seasoning. As for starters, the Caesar Salad was edible but could be done better at home, and the croutons didn’t add anything. As for the clam chowder, that was actually pretty good, although thick. All in all, I won’t be returning, which is a shame after what Joey’s used to be.
