Not coming back Tried year and half ago to get take away. Service was poor but the lamb was excellent. Tried again couple months later and the people answering the phone were so incredibly rude that we ended up ordering from somewhere else. Hanging out downtown and decided to give them another chance. Service is among the worst we have ever experienced and it could have something to do with all the different waiters. One for ordering, one for water, one for the food, and one for the drinks. No wonder they had to come back to the table 10 minutes after we ordered to confirm it. My partner ordered white wine and we had to send the waiter away with the red he brought over, then we were charged for the wrong glass and given no apology. In fact the wine waiter argued with us about the order, and we had to show the permanently affixed menu on the table and that there was no white wine for the price we were charged! The waiters would drop the food and drinks and just walk away. No one came to ask how the food was or if we needed refills. We ended up cutting our trip short instead of staying around and ordering dessert or additional rounds of drinks. They lost an extra $30 from the bill and We flat out refused to tip, which We have never done before anywhere. We tried to get the waiters attention and were ignored. They offered nothing off the bill or a gift certificate for next time; they really dont care about their customers. On the way out, I could hear the waitress/hostess arguing with a customer on the phone and telling them that they picked up the wrong order to go. Given our experience, I highly doubt her version of events. There are too many good restaurants that deserve our business. This place is not one of them.

Be happy at least you have one star from me. This is the worst restaurant in town, not just because their taste is worst but also their service. Its a bunch of racist Indian people working there who dont respect Indian people. I have heard this from lots of Indian guys who used to go their for lunch and they were not treated good. I was there with some of my friends and my friend experienced the same thing. I will never appreciate such thing in my life. The food they serve you is not even close to regular Indian food, I dont know why they say its an Indian restaurant. If anybody likes Indian food and want to see how real authentic Indian food tastes; go to "Thulasi" in westside, I gurantee you that youll always go there. Maharani staffs are racists their food sucks and their service as well.

Have been meaning to post this for about two years so am sorry it is not timely, however...I got so violently ill here on what I believe was a poisonous dessert sitting in some heated liquid that I felt I had to post a review. I was meaning to report this restaurant to the health authorities but was so ill that I didnt manage that and was traveling to boot, so it soon became a bad memory. Fortunately, my boyfriend was with me the night we ate at this restaurant and he did not eat the dessert. So he was wide awake at 3:00 am when I actually had a seizure after throwing up all night and he says my eyes rolled back in my head. He was about to call 911 but that was apparently the worst of the bout of illness and after that I recovered. Be warned. They should have been shut down.

I have lived in several large cities in the country and can confidently say that the food here is above the "average" mark, although not at or near the top. I would have given this restaurant a higher mark but for two things: the service, which is tepid at best, although our water glasses were filled often, but the thing that I can not and will not excuse is the black mold that is EVERYwhere in the first room, near the entrance, and in the main dining room. By the time we finished our meal, my head was pounding and 24+ hours later my sinuses are still plugged. If you go there, ask to be seated in the back room, or at least away from the windows, where the mold is most prevalent. HINT: you can NOT bleach away black mold. The place should be refurbished.....

I agree when other users say that Maharani has great food at a great price (especially for their lunch buffet), BUT I am so fed up with consistently being insulted by the host that Im quitting this place altogether. He rolls his eyes anytime we pull out our student IDs for the discount, he snapped at my family when they visited town, and he acts like a busy day at the buffet is everyone elses problem (he threw our napkins and silverware on the table, for Petes sake). So although Im aware there are bound to be cultural differences in customer service, this guys attitude goes way too far.

Honestly, the Indian cuisine in Madison is good and its really hit-or-miss sometimes (not just talking about Maharani). I like Maharani as its the most consistent, its busy, clean, and the food is pretty good, but its not excellent nor is it even really good. When I was in California, there were a wide variety of Indian restaurants and the food was spectacular and I guess I sort of miss that here... I feel like its good, but could definitely be better. Come for the buffet - you get a variety and the prices are the most reasonable this way too.

I actually went here with my Urdu (language) class. The waiter who was with us was very nice and attentive. We introduced ourselves in Urdu and he even got permission from the chef for us to go into the back kitchen to see the Tandoori oven and saw them make the bread. The food was very fresh, tasty, and spicy :) I recommend going there with a group and just sharing food around the table so you can taste a little of everything. There is a wide variety and the food is authentic. Overall it was a very good experience; I would go there again.

Very disappointed . I saw it had won awards so I was exited for a good meal. I love indian food. Iam use yo atlanta little India area in decatur with amazing indian. This place was not even close . The veggie pakora was the worst I ever had. The Aloo tikki Was Very greasy and not good. The paneer tikki masala said it was grilled but was just plain paneer in a jar tasting tomato sauce and though I asked for hot it was not even mild. I would never eat here again. I got it to go and we threw most if it away. A waste of $27

Love the food, but the service here is weird. The waiters are pleasant, but they disappear for long periods of time. Your food arrives in a timely fashion, but it often takes a VERY long time to get the check. Last time I went it took nearly 45 minutes to chase someone down and give us our check after we had finished our meals. Itll be a while before I come back. IMO the food is excellent, the waiters and ambience are nice, but you will probably end up staying longer than you want to, especially if they are busy.
