Planned a special weekend trip to Winchester for my husbands birthday mainly because of what Ive read about the restaurant on their website and the idea that they serve fresh ingredients bought at local farms daily. I guess we had our table reserved quite early (6:30PM on a Saturday night) because there were no other guests present. The hostess who was also our waiter was polite but not genuinely nice and accommodating. We ordered two appetizers but she brought us just one. When we asked her if the other appetizer is coming out soon she looked at us like aliens and said that we only ordered one. Might I add- she was not apologetic for her mistake at all which to us seemed a little odd but we gave her benefit of the doubt. All this time other staff members were standing at the bar area and talking in hushed voices and looking in our directions which made us feel very uncomfortable. Now, when the entrees came out my husband took one bite and realized that that is not at all what he ordered. He called the waitress over and again, without any apologies she said: I though you ordered Bison! My husband looked at me and asked me if he really is crazy and ordered something that he was not even considering when we looked over the menu. I confirmed that Bison was most certainly not what he had ordered! Waitress grabbed the plate and just darted to the kitchen. The chef came out to the bar area and stared at us whispering and looking our way. The bottom line is that the staff and even the chef himself is beyond horrible and are not meant to work in food service industry. They made us feel uncomfortable, talked about us behind our backs, messed up our order twice and made us feel like were the ones who didnt order correctly. They did not once ask us if the food was ok and didnt say anything when we were leaving. The food was ok- it was not as spectacular as I thought it would be and I felt so bad that I gave my husband such a HORRIBLE birthday gift. We for sure will not be going back there ever again!!!

The wait staff was very helpful, showed my wife and I to a very romantic nook for our anniversary dinner. Table bread was delightful and warm. Wait staff and menu were very accommodating to my wife who has a gluten allergy. We had heard rave reviews from locals and tried One Block West with great expectations of fine dining with local ingredients. Being a wine bar I was not surprised at the small beer menu, though still very surprised that no VA beers were available. Food was good, but not great. The price may have matched the ingredients but for the taste and ultimate product we both found the entrees over-priced. I had the local rabbit, which came served as a pasta. The dish had the taste and texture of tuna casserole with high end noodles. Not bad, but disappointing. Wait staff also insisted on calling the dish "bunny" both upon table service and written on the check, which honestly is a somewhat less than appetizing choice of names. Id rather not feel like I had ordered a childs stuffed animal. My wife had bison ragu which, similarly, was not bad but also quite a standard Italian dish. At the end of the day we both felt duped by the headline ingredient and wished we had chosen an outdoors spot at a cheaper restaurant on the pedestrian mall one block over. Would have been a better match to price and expectations.

I was very excited about this place after reading the reviews, but after my recent dinner experience, Id have to say I wouldnt return. Most of the food was actually quite tasty, although the mushroom appetizer was inedible due to the fact that it tasted as though I was eating dirt and sand. Forgot to wash them perhaps? Anyway, as I was saying, most of the food was tasty, and the wine which was suggested was very good. The atmosphere was advertised as quiet, which is one of the reasons I chose it, but it was TOO quiet. I felt as though I had to whisper during the meal. Also, the seating was incredibly uncomfortable, and since I have a spinal injury, this made the experience even worse. The interior was dated, and could use some enhancements. My main complaint however, is with the lack of value. We ordered the scallops as an appetizer, and out came TWO scallops, leaving the rest of the plate looking bare and our stomachs empty. The meal was over $100, and it wouldnt have bothered me to spend that much if the food and atmosphere were worth it, but sadly, they were not. It is true that the menu changes, and that the staff are accomodating, but if the value isnt there, it just falls flat when the check comes.

I usually do not write reviews, so that should be an indicator how amazing this restaurant is. My husband and I went there last night for my birthday. It was quiet, but it was also a Wednesday night. We ordered appetizers, glazed brussel sprouts and fried green tomato BLT. They were amazing, perfectly seasoned and the chef even brought them to our table for us. So nice to meet the person cooking your food. Dinner was the squash cakes and short ribs. I took a whim on the squash cakes and would go back again. They were served with two different sauces, and the tomato one was a perfect combination. My husband doesnt typically eat beef but cleared his plate. And since it was my birthday we splurged and got dessert. I must say I have been disappointed by creme brulee, but this Pumpkin spice one was outstanding! I truly have nothing negative to say about this place, accept maybe that I didnt see a Moscato wine on the list. One Block West is a hidden gem, a fantastic place to spend an adult night out. Only wish wed found it sooner!

We have dined at One Block West in Winchester many times and each one a fantastic dining experience! I wish we lived closer so we could come weekly! We have always chosen the Chef’s Whim with wine pairing so we can enjoy his innovative, seasonal dishes. Every experience has been fabulous for our taste buds. Everything is sourced from local farms and growers (including Chef Ed’s backyard) and is fresh and wonderfully creative. Chef Ed is eager to make your meal special. Ed will take your party’s dietary requests into consideration and gladly accommodates sensitivities and allergies – so be sure to let him know when making your reservation. Ed and the team are hospitable and eager to ensure your experience is the best. One Block West is a jewel. Anne and Dave Jennings

For the second time, my wife and I had dinner at One Block West, and for the second time, we had a fabulous experience. From the decor to the live solo guitarist to excellent, attentive wait staff, our experience was superlatively memorable. Oh, and wait, the food! Careful preparation, great portion sizes, and never-overcooked plates make this place a gem. Excellent variety of dishes that doesnt overwhelm the diner with too many choices, but provides menu item after menu item of interest. I dont think there were any dishes or drinks that I wouldnt have tried. May we dine again with you soon!
