The best "homemade" Indian Cuisine in downtown Richmond. I have eaten at SOI numerous times for both lunch buffet and dinner selections for almost 2 years. The food is freshly prepared personally by the chef and owner. The buffet is always good but my favorite dishes are the Butter Lamb and Lamb Tikka Masala (mouth watering and licking my chops just thinking about it). The fresh homemade naan bread selection is to "die for". You could make a meal out of just dipping Naan in the various savory sauces from the buffet. The owner and his wife are hard working and very nice people and im always greeted with a smile and a "Hello my friend" when i walk in with mouth watering..If you like Indian Food then i highly recommend that you stop by the Spice of India and give it a try.

Horrible place. Smells so bad. Tables were not clean. And at lunch times 3 items were not available even after 1 hour wait. Rate is $12 and some change after tax. It doesnt look like restaurant in USA but old dhaba in India. I wonder how they pass their inspection coz it was not as clean as any restaurant should be clean. And yes they use disposable plates. And I think they reuse their spoons and forks I found couple of those having stains on them. So dont go there. And top of that I got food poisoning after lunch. One of the worst experience of having lunch at any Indian restaurant. Guy on register were more interested where I come from than to do transaction. I regret my decision, So dont go there.

Not ready on time Bad food I ordered 2 entrees for pick up on their website. Got the confirmation email saying it will be 30 minutes. I got there to pick it up 45 minutes later but my order wasnt ready. I waited for 20 minutes to pick it up. The order had some missing items, We only noticed on the way home and had to turn around ask for the missing rice dish. The food wasnt good. Just a lot of cardamom in both dishes, no flavor... We ordered both dishes Medium Spice but one was super spicy and the other was very mild. Spice levels seem to be very inconsistent. Next time, Ill stick to Lemon Indian Cuisine or Farouks, where the food is good and they dont waste my time

This place is bad. Was on a business trip, was out looking to grab something to eat, came across this place. Walked in, was empty, no greeting, had to ask if they were open, said yes, I sat myself, buffet food was....nah..,not fresh, out of the 10 items they had out, only 2 were alright... never got offered if I needed something to drink, got up and asked if I can have some water, lady brought it 10mns later...,this was in the late afternoon, maybe service & food is better during lunch times, IDK, but I def wouldnt go back, if you dont care for service and quality of food, then this place will be good for you , I wouldnt recommend it to anyone.

My office is right by here so Ive gone more than a couple of times to the lunch buffet as well as gotten take-out. The food is awesome and plentiful for the price. You can always count on a magnitude of vegetarian options during the lunch buffet as well. They change it up everyday but they will generally have an appetizer (like chili fritters), two vegetarian dishes, two different types of rice (plain basmati and lemon rice or biryani), naan and then an assortment of meat dishes. But for those vegetarians considering take-out, I recommend the butter paneer, malai kofta and egg biryani. All so good!

Price of buffet and the food served here is okay! But the Togo box from buffet is way too overpriced.. A small togo box with 3 compartments, I have ever seen is priced at a buffet price, that is $10 each. I am surprised they charge togo boxes like this, they should be priced per pound of food like other places. Update: their food is the worst tasting Indian food. Feels like every dish is yesterdays. I wish they can change the cook or provide some tasty food. Being the only Indian Restaurant in downtown they should make some changes to provide tasty Indian food. Will give zero stars if I can.

On my first pass at the buffet, I noticed a few of the dishes had run out (eg. butter chicken). The vegetarian balls were the best thing they had there, but I got the last ones, and they were not replenished for the remaining 30mins I was there. When the butter chicken came out I tried it, and the chicken was dry and firm. In all the other chicken dishes the chicken seemed low grade as it was mostly bone. This did not go well with the plastic knives and forks which had trouble pulling the gristle away from the bone. Considering the overall experience, the lunch buffet was overpriced.

The first Indian restaurant we have tried here in Richmond. The food is great, wonderful flavors wonderful spices. They have a great deal for $10.99 for an all you can lunch buffet I highly recommend that !! if you go in and order to take out at dinner time.. butter chicken and rice or butter chicken and non is almost $14... and the picture I took shows how much you get, great flavor but not good value.. The staff are very friendly!!! limited amount of seating, parking is as most places in downtown Richmond a hassle... but the lunch buffet is worth it!!

Absolutely pathetic in every respect! I am just glad no one has fallen ill in our group, yet. Old rice which you know is old as the color is brownish and there is nothing that remotely resembles anything Pakistani or Mediterranean (as stated in their menu) in their food. Its all heavy cream mixed yellow curry which they serve in square little dishes and if one wants chicken/lamb/goat etc. the sauce remains the same and they just swap the protein around. What a sad horrible place to rip people off.

I had high hopes, which were dashed. The positives: the can of Diet Coke was lovely and cold. The negatives: everything else. Worst lunch I have had in years, without question. While the naan, rice and hummus was plentiful, the buffet entrees were never refreshed while I was there. That may have been a good thing: whatever meat was in the butter chicken and chicken korma, it was mostly bone and gristle. A $10 ripoff. Unless they turn this around quickly, this place wont last long.

Stopped in here today for a quick lunch. I give this place 4 stars for the category I feel it falls under. This is definitely a "quick eats" type place. Most of the food items were tasty but the cauliflower and potatoes dish tasted off and was a bit lukewarm instead of hot. Overall I believe the lunch buffet was a good value. The host and cashier were both nice. This is a little "whole in the wall" type restaurant for sure. The interior is nothing special but the food was fine.

The food is always fresh and there is a great variety of vegetarian and meat dishes. I primarily ate meat dishes when I started eating here but now I love the vegetarian dishes so much that I fill up on those. I have to get tandoori chicken, though. Its always delicious. Theres always biryani on the buffet as well. I go at least once a week and am never disappointed.
