Visited The Main Street Mill because it was lunch time and we avoid fast food. We dont live in the area and didnt research Front Royal for the best food places. My wife and I were both pleasantly surprised on entering the restaurant. We remained on the lower level and did not visit the upper floor. The ambience (on the lower level) was appealing and old-worldly with the heavy aged wood beams and uprights, and murals including that of a morose bull and inquisitive looking horses face. The service, by what seemed to be at the time an all female staff, was prompt and courteous. I ordered the Cajun Chicken Salad and my wife got the Chicken (not fried) Ceasar. Our waitress was dressed as a milkmaid and she was extremely welcoming. We were surprised at how inexpensive the dishes were on the menu but were exceedingly delighted with their presentations and taste. I expected rubber chicken but the seasoning was perfect and in both cases the chicken was moist and delicious. My reason for visiting the area was to see the fall colors on Skyline Drive and I was afforded a fine preview of it on my plate. There were quite a few dishes on the menu I would have liked to try. The crab and corn soup was very tempting but reluctantly I wasnt inclined to over eat. Both my wife and I agree that The Main Street Mill was more than a worthy place and deserving of a return visit. We congratulate the chef and service staff. We consider our visit as excellent value for money. One minor negative issue was that the toilet seat in the male bathroom could use a facelift.

Im a D.C.suburban transplant that moved near Front Royal about 12 years ago. I dine at the Main Street Mill approximately 6 -10 times a year. In comparison to most of the non-chain restaurants in town, the food is fairly good. Selections are a bit limited, but the pricing is not bad. "The Mill" Ive found is consistently better than most of the other places in town. The atmosphere is Old Virginia touristy, set in a 100+ year old building that started life as a grain mill. The building and furnishings certainly look aged, but not bad enough to earn any negative points. Ive had many of the selections on the menu. I cant say any of them are "wow" outstanding, but Ive never had a terrible meal at the MSM. Some complaints written about restaurants involve the wait staff. I quickly learn who are the best servers, and that certainly has played a part in my review here. The meals just turn out better, when the servers are older and more experienced. I notice that some of the younger servers we have had, seem to be irritated, and act like its a bother to wait on the table. However, that is not exclusive to the Mill, its pretty much the same way throughout Front Royal. In contrast, older servers are usually pleasant, accommodating, and always nearby in short order to take care of any needs. In summary, the Main Street Mill is a worthwhile place to eat when visiting Front Royal.

I had a meal at the bar upstairs. It was a busy Friday night at the MSMR and the bartender was a bit preoccupied by what appeared to be the local drunk. She cheered up a bit but was not unpleasant but she was also not engaging. I was impressed with the range of menu items. Some seemed original created for the menu and I honestly had a struggle deciding. I had the filet with a lobster Newburg sauce, the onion rings and coleslaw. The meal was served promptly but it was evident the server did not know whose meal it was and it was placed on the bar and the bartender gestured that it was for me. Luckily it was in reach and I began to sample it. The coleslaw almost had more sauce than slaw and was not at all unique. Very bland and actually a bit warm. But the full-sized onion rings were very good and the filet was perfectly cooked as ordered, medium rare. The Newburg sauce was very good and some subtle flavours were evident. The atmosphere is very family oriented that night and there is a smattering of TVs around the 2nd floor but I have to admit I was expecting some HDTVs and they had older technology. Not a big deal but generally the standard is to have better TVs in a roadhouse like this is. Overall an good meal. Service could have been more friendly but I suspect it was an off night for the staff member serving me.

Probably the biggest draw is the fact that they have a smoking section thats sanctioned under the new Virginia law that requires smokers to be cloistered in a closed area with a separate ventilation system. The food is nothing special. Its typical salad/sandwich-type stuff. My biggest gripe is the fact that the last time I went, I was with some friends and we had separate checks. Each of us payed cash, but I needed change. The server came and took our money and we sat and talked a while longer. Finally someone asked, "What are we waiting for?" "My change," I said. We all became keenly aware that the waitress had given herself a $5 tip on a $10 check. It might even have been OK, except that she was rather gruff and not particularly attentive. A word of advice: use a card when you go here, or very specifically say "I need change" when you pay.

Passing through town, and thought Id try a pub resturaunt with a bar for beer and some food. I was directed upstairs to the tavern area and found a seat at the bar. The portly bartender person never acknowledged me even though I was a new smiling face. The local bar fly group to my left got his attention and had orders filled. Another local came in, sat to my right, was immediately acknowledged and the bartenter had a whole Im out of your favorite, heres what we have conversation...and heres me invisible to this stalwart of customer service...needless to say, I went unnoticed, unacknowledged as I slid off my stool and wandered on out. There are too many places to spend hard earned money. Unless you are part of the bubba brigade that apparently calls this place home, dont expect to be treated any better than I was...

We thought the server and service were excellent. Tanya made our visit special and responded to our special requests promptly, graciously and with a smile. The homemade veggie beef soup was excellent! My husband ordered spaghetti with meat sauce (after asking to sample the 2 red sauces to see if he liked them) and was very pleased. He did ask for extra sauce. I had the Black and Bleu Filet. The seasoning was perfect, but they had run out of bleu cheese, so I substituted blue cheese dressing. Worked out well! My green beans were canned, but the chef added just the right touches to bring out a great taste that was not greasy or overpowering. Only real negatives were the cocktails which tasted diluted and were very weak. Next time Ill order the wine. Overall, an excellent experience!

Okay. Let me just start by saying this place is FILTHY. The workers are RUDE as can be. I used to work here, the food is not fresh whatsoever. My first night the owner, Alice, picked up a piece of rib and asked the cook "are these from last night"? This is NOT HEALTHY. The reason I no longer have a job there, is because everyone is rude as hell. The workers there are THEIVES and Alice REFUSES to do anything about it because she knows no one else would wanna work there. Almost every worker is on some type of drug, and thats the reason why some of them wear long sleeves under their work shirt. Not only that, theres rouches and me and several other have even seen rat/mouse droppings on the floor.
