Our latest visit was just bad all around. First of all, for someone new, the menu is TOO big! Too many choices and not enough pictures...and the pictures posted dont have the dishs name on it. Our server didnt know the specials but he found out and got right back to us (kudos to him). My friend ordered the BBQ ribs and a loaded baked potato. What the server failed to mention was that "loaded" meant bacon, broccoli and sliced American cheese - also the ribs were pork although pictures of ribs in the menu were of beef ribs. I ordered the Lumberjack Special which included pancakes - I asked if I could get the Banana Nut pancakes instead of plain and he said yes. The eggs and ham were tasteless, even after covering them with salt and pepper. The main reason for our visit that night was for the dessert case. So many awesome-looking desserts! How disappointing it was to get those to our table to find them cold, stale and tasteless except for the dollop of whipped cream they added before bringing it to our table. When the bill came, I had been charged $1 for bananas and $2.05 for pecans. When I asked my server about it, he said that I was charged because I substituted flavored pancakes for plain. I expressed to him that extra charges for substitutions were not listed in the menu, nor did he mention it AT ALL when I asked if I could get the Banana Nut pancakes instead. He just looked at me and said that of course there was a charge because I substituted, and I said again that he should have told me when I ordered it. I can understand paying more for substitutions (IHOP has it right in their menu...but they charge one rate for substitutions, not an extra charge per ingredient!) but what I couldnt stomach was the servers haughty looks and attitude when we had this discussion. To top everything off, we got to enjoy the ending of our meal and conversation while talking over the vacuum cleaner in the dining area! At least they didnt vacuum at our table but they were at the next table over. So frustrating to have such a bad experience in a place that seems to be getting great reviews...

AMAZING! So happy we found this place in our new neighborhood! Were from NY. Moving down to Virginia weve had to retrain ourselves to the slower pace, but City Diner is a true taste of home. The menu is what you would expect of a good diner, its huge and full of every option. You could walk in thinking of what you want to eat and most likely, its on the menu already. Inside the diners perfectly weird and eclectic decor, if I shut my eyes, it feels as if I could be in a diner Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. • Staff: Always friendly and fast. • Prices: Weve never spent more than $40 here for dinner for 2. This seems like a spot for the older, social security collectors in town, not an overpriced place by any stretch of the imagination. I dont know what people are talking about when they say its overpriced for a diner. • Food: Excellent every time weve been! The coffee is delicious, the french fries are crunchy and amazing, their sandwiches are great. The potato salad and cole slaw Im going in to order to-go, if I ever have a bbq...just everything is great. As far as peoples poor reviews, OBVIOUSLY, its a diner aka "greasy spoon." Dont expect a 5-star steak house dining experience, its perfect the way it is. If youre looking for a reliably delicious, quick bite to eat while shopping in the area, etc., skip the slower, usually disappointing chain places and come here.

I walked in on my lunch break. I had been at work since 4am. I stumbled upon this place after getting gas and I love supporting local businesses. The owner was greeting and seating customers. He gave me the biggest and warmest smile. He sat me and personally took my order when my server was busy. Within 5 minutes to my surprise my food came out. I was shocked lol I wondered was it premade or did someone have magical powers. The food was excellent with huge portions. I ordered the eggs, keilbasa, creamy grits, Belgian waffle. Yeah I know I couldnt help myself lol after a few minutes the owner came over and asked did I want my waffle warmed. I didnt expect such a hospitable experience but I received more than just a meal, I received dedication from a business owner to keep his customers coming back and keeping them satisfied. I will be bk, with friends. So if your reading this, spend your money here. It will be well spent!

Ive been here probably about 10 times, and City Diner has never let me down. My kids loved the food, my ex wife loved the food, my Peruvian girlfriend loved the food, my best friend who grew up in Germany ate here with me a couple of times and loved it every time, and lastly my parents enjoyed the food and waiting service. Broad menu like any other diner, but every single dish I tried seemed on point. Anytime anyone comes here to stay with me from any part in the world, I take them to City Diner as it is a sure and easy hit. Thanks to City Diner for the military discount, and I never get bored of looking at the different gadgets and toys on display to look at while I eat and converse with my family and friends!

Meh. Spent $20 on brunch consisting of so so eggs Benedict, slimy potatoes, and only ok coffee. I was disappointed because I had come to the diner that promised "all-day breakfast" because I was craving a muffin...and they were all out by noon. The one shining star was the fresh fruit salad that I had in place of the muffin I wanted--it was great! Lots of different perfectly ripe fruits in a cereal bowl-sized portion; no hints of bruising or discoloration as you often see in fruit salads. The guy who im guessing to be the manager? was also very friendly and attentive and service was decent.

City Diner is way over rated. Im from out of town and stopped by for breakfast a few days ago on a family trip. We arrived on a weekday at about 9:00am and we were the only customers in the place for the first 15min. Food was ok. Def not 5 stars. Service was less than ok. The waiter was impatient and seemed rushed. By the time we were ready for the check he was quick to return with coffee refills. If I lived in the area I would look for aonther place for food & better serice (with or without family). I would give City Diner 2-1/2 stars if I could.

The food was delicious. I ordered the Jalapeno Hell Hole omelette, which was fluffy and packed with bold flavor. The grits were surprisingly delicious - at first sight I wondered if I was going to be able to eat all the grits they provided, but after the first few bites somehow the grits simply disappeared :) Our table also ordered the strawberry pancakes, which were equally delicious, fluffy and flavorful. I deducted 1 star for a few waiter-related issues we experienced, but nothing that wasnt eventually corrected. Overall, a great experience.

First and last visit....NOT IMPRESSES! the waitress dropped off the menu and we didnt see her again until it was time for the check. I order of French toast it was enough to feed an entire family. the food was not that great and the service ....No comments to describe it. the manager came over to the table to ask if we wanted something else instead of rhe giant size french toast. ughhhhh NO, I want the check to get out of here. Needless to say I left the restaurant hungry. McDonalds is across the street. Thank God !
