We discovered this place over a year ago after moving to the north end of Charlottesville near Hollymead/Forest Lakes! Up until then we were regulars of Guadalajara, and let me tell you, after comparing the two over several weeks I have to say that El Js (as we call it) TAKES THE CAKE! Now we have not obviously tried everything on the menu... but every single dish we HAVE tried is DELICIOUS, the staff is extremely pleasant & willing to modify orders (which is necessary for certain members of our family), the food is always fresh and comes out relatively quickly, the chips are pretty standard but the WHITE dipping sauce is incredible (and my family likes the cheese dip as well) and UNLIKE Guad they don’t charge extra for refills on chips!! Also, their prices seem slightly lower than the other Mexican restaurants in C’ville, and although we agree that the new Plaza Azteca’s food is good… we cannot afford to spend an arm & a leg on the same thing we can get at El J’s for much less! Overall we LOVE this place and recommend it to anyone who has not been there or for some reason was not impressed with their first visit, for we are pretty critical judges of “authentic” Mexican food, and El J’s is our spot when it comes to Charlottesville! :) Happy Grubbing & Many Blessings!

Dont go here! Im sick and tired of these incompetent people getting my order wrong time and time again. I use to go here because they were close. I went there well over 15 times and each time my order was incorrect and I had to send it back. I decided a few years ago not to go back to El Jaripeo. Today, I was hungry and I decided to go back there. I simply wanted the Vegetarian fajitas. I got home to fajitas smothered with chicken, beef and shrimp. I had to go back to them and tell them, once again, they had my order wrong. Because I didnt bring the beans back, they refused to give me a full refund. Are you kidding????? They are incompetent on all levels. How they stay in business is beyond me.

Good food; absolutely terrible service. I was in the Charlottesville area visiting my girlfriends family, and we stopped here for a late lunch. We were seated right away, but that was to be expected, as the building was almost empty. Our drinks were never refilled while we were there, and after 15 minutes of standing by the table, waiting for the waitress to take our bill, we ended up leaving cash on the table, and walking out. If we were supposed to take our bill somewhere we should have been informed, but I am not sure if that was even the case. The food was still pretty delicious, and if the service wasnt as bad as it was, I would give it another shot.

Go there weekly. Only complaint I have is when we ordered fajitas to go, they forgot the tortilla shells. We did not notice this until we were home. We called and they offered to give us free tortilla shells next time. We had to eat fajitas without an essential fajitas ingredient and they did not even offer a partial refund. Other then that we love it.

waitress stole my wifes iphone. our 2 year olds birthday party pictures are gone forever. the owner/manager and the waitress lied to the police. find my iphone showed the phone was still there but the police officer could not do anything. my wife showed them and they kept changing their story. none of us will ever go there again.

Authentic? What the store-bought pre-mix Marguerita (foul tasting)? The loaded with salt absolutely everything (even the rice!)? Overcooked beef. Overcooked shrimp. There were 2 things that were B grade: salsa/chips and the flour tortilla for use with their Fajitas. Everything else was C to F grade. Not going back for sure.

My family enjoyed this tex-mex style restaurant conviently located within walking distance of Forest Lakes North (albeit one is required to walk across at least one busy street and a parking lot to get there). The food is inexpensive and they have good specials; I would recommend this restaurant if you enjoy Mexican.

Ive been to El Jaripeo multiple times and I really enjoy their Enchiladas Texanas with a side of beans. They are really delicious! I completely recommend this place to anyone who loves great food and excellent service. The waiters / waitresses are very nice and very speedy with their service!

A local, no-frills Mexican restaurant with rib-sticking food. The staff is friendly & the food is pretty good. If you want a smaller dish, go for the quesadillas. The dinner menu has a good selection & you can order as hot (or not) as you want. Of course, free chips & salsa.

The chicken burrito a la carte is literally a flour tortilla with unseasoned shredded chicken breast, and canned tomato sauce. I was shocked. No rice, no beans, nothing but the chicken. This place gives Mexican cuisine a bad name.

Decent Tex-Mex, about as good as it gets on the East Coast (I grew up in the Southwest, so my ideas of good are somewhat different). Best thing is the Modelo Negra, but the chile rellenos enchiladas, and tacos are pretty good too.
