Good sides to point out are the good waitress service and the clean bathroom. Sometime they can be pretty hard to come by. Bad sides that actually stand out from all the Japanese place I went to over the year, are: 1, Price of the food. I have no problem with paying for higher price for better products, i.e, better fish, better representation etc. Thats one of the reason people eat at Japanese restaurant, But what I got is grocery level products. The genki deluxe is a joke. not only the fish has been cut into half piece size and half of the thickness, also the amount as well. Even the daikon garnish underneath the sashimi has been replaced by shred cabbage. And thats $19 deluxe. 2. Quality of the food. The type of sashimi fish is average everyday fish you will find in any lower-end average sushi establishment. Beside the 4 pieces salmon belly cuts (really only 2 pieces compare to average) is somewhat up to the standard, the 1 Hamachi, 1tuna, 4white tuna (again, 2 pieces really), and 1shrimp is really no special. Let along the thickness. The teriyaki beef I ordered is also a joke. The only thing you probably can not do at home is the sizzling plate that dish comes out on. Even that sizzling plate is cheap thin metal plate that came lukewarm. The beef was a 6oz steak been cut horizontally into two pieces, the 2 steamed broccoli, 4 carrots and the 2 water chestnuts was used as garnish. The teriyaki sauce is same as the one you bought from Kroger, beside the sesame was roasted in house,(because some of them were burned) it is really no brainer. The so call miso soup that came with the meal has dominated taste of salt due to over use of it. The type of the miso was used in this soup is undescribable. I couldnt remember if there is any Kombu or Tofu, but only cloudy half dissolved pale miso hover at bottom of the bowl, not even a drop of soy, or anything else. The rice that came with the meal is OK. They are mixed long, medium and short grain rice, may be mix of long and medium. Only thing is if you have patience, you probably can count out how many pieces of rice was in that tiny bowl. The Nabeyakiudon is just plain as soysauce plus warm water. Dont believe me? Try that yourself. I first thought it might be accident that only mine didnt came out right, only until I read some of the reviews online. The 6-8 piece of shrimp it came with are frozen, shell less, imported, rubber-ish shrimp you will find in a shrimp fried rice from a Chinese take out place, and the seafood section of Kroger. The chickens in the soup was chicken bits, like the one that McDonald used for fried pop corn chicken cup. The whole bowl were full of jumbo onions, the only positive element of this udon is the few fish cakes and its udon noodle, which both are made elsewhere,(you can get them at Oasis World Market located across street) hard to screw up something is pre made. And this bowl will cost you $11.45? The décor of the restaurant? There were décor? I didnt see anything beside the paint job. I must be missing something, help me out here. Oh yeah, the hand sinks in the bathroom is nicer than Walmarts hand sink, but the brown paper towel beside it took the points away. In other Japanese restaurant, they use those cheap brown paper towel to clean furniture, glasses etc. And the hand soap, at least get something average... They had cut so many corners, I dont felt like its a Japanese restaurant. Felt more like a place try to lower the cost in every possible way, and increase the profit margin by disguise behind the name. And I heard about this crazy Mondays after I read other reviews, suppose have some cheap promotion of sushi that excites a lot of customers. But I wonder what type of sushi is on SALE for A DOLLAR? You know a business is in trouble when you see discounts flying around. I know Blacksburg is a college town, but come on, how low the standard can you lower it to? (Their "automatic-added-18%-gratuity-to-the-bill-for-party-of-6-or-more" is very up to the standard.)

The worst Japanese restaurant ever. I have visited many Japanese restaurants and experienced good and bad ones but this was the worst and made me to write a review. I wish I had a choice for no star. When I walked in I saw a sign saying the #1 sushi place in blacksburg by CollegeateTime. After having sushi, I was suspicious the sign was made by the restaurant. The fish on sushi and sashimi were as thin as it could be. I guess they could not make Shrimp thinner, but if there was a way, I have no doubt they would. Nabe udon was warm. I assumed, they were waiting for other dish get prepared and brought all together. They do not know what Nabe means in Japanese. Nabe means a metal pot in Japanese. The Nabe udon supposed to be hot and served in a metal pot itself. Their Nabe udon was brought in a bowl and it has mostly carrot and veggies and imported frozen shrimp to cut cost. I would not mind paying high price for good food but I wish they had a return policy like Walmart. All the signs on wall were for excellent services not for good food so do make those sign fool you.

Rudeness is not appreciated, but the food is great. This is probably my 5th or 6th time visiting Sake House. I have always had wonderful sushi there and I have met the owner on various occasions and she is wonderful. However, this is the third time that I have had Christie (sp? Kristie?) as a server, and each time, my overall experience has deteriorated. The other hosts/hostesses are always very nice and seating is never a problem, and many of the wait staff are great! The sushi is top-grade and Ive never known anyone to have been served something they didnt love. Unfortunately, service is a big part of how I view a restaurant. Christie has been rude to not only me, but many of the people I have visited with. And even worse, when I have described my experience to others, they always ask "Oh! Did you have Christie (or they would describe her)? Shes so rude." So this is not something that only I have experienced. I would suggest the Crunch and Alaska Rolls, as these are a couple of my go-tos; however, I would also suggest to avoid this particular server.

If your in Blacksburg and you must have Sushi, then ok this is the place since according to the staff there is only (1) other sushi joint...and they think theyre the best. Perhaps for the locals they are. But if you travel and have tried sushi in other places....beware. Be afraid, be very very afraid...unless you have a wad of cash and dont really care about how much you spend on Mediocre sushi. The Big Easy was a joke. Six small pieces that dont even measure up to the local grocer. And they call it a "specialty roll". The owner would not stand behind their product and instead kept saying, "You ordered it....and the price is right there in the menu." Bad value...bad sushi...but excellent service. If the help would only quit and find work elsewhere.
