My girlfriend at the time and I were eating at the lunch buffet one Sunday morning when the following incident took place. I had to use the restroom, so I excused myself (spicy=lots of water=bathroom break), I came back and my girlfriend had a face that was on that was usually reserved for funerals. "Whats wrong, baby?" "The manager said that I was eating too much and that he didnt like that," she sobbed. Let me stop here to fill you in with a couple crucial details-- My girlfriend at the time was all of 110 lbs, 5 4" tall, a person who was Anti-War and Vegan, one of the most peaceful people Ive ever had the pleasure of being with. If anything, Im the bottomless pit that dragged her along so that I could eat food in bulk, asI could (and routinely did) outeat her 3 fold. But I digress.. "Uhhhh...this is a buffet, the whole idea is to eat as much as you want," said I, alternatively baffled at how she could take such a comment to heart and why the manager (undeniably standoffish and rude though he was) would say such a thing. These words did not comfort her though, so I came up with an idea that would please her and keep the peace as well-- The last thing I want on a Sunday afternoon on a full stomach is a screaming match with at a restuarant with someone who speaks English as a 2nd language in front of my crying girlfriend. So I went and grabbed a bunch of Samosas from the buffet and wrapped them up and stuffed them in her fanny pack (another story), we payed our bill, went to the movies, left and walked around, then went home and made love (hey, sometimes there are happy endings). The moral of this story is that Kashmir is a lesser version of the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. Ignore the rudeness, eat the food and leave. Unfortunately, they seem to have stopped putting Samosas on the buffet though, which makes me wonder... They have a gift certificate available at restaurant dot com which gives you $10 off of a $20 bill, which usually means business is flagging-- I do remember when I was on my way one Sunday morning to the other Indian buffet on Bardstown road, Sitar, which had just opened up and I was stopped at a light and I saw that same manager/ owner? in the incident above come outside and look around, as if to wonder where everyone was and quite literally scratch his head. Youd think that an Indian restaurant owner would understand the basic concept of Karma.

After sampling every Indian restaurant in Louisville, I can tell you that Kasmir is the cheapest (by a small margin) and the best in town. The digs have a great patio for warm weather, although the interior of the restaurant betrays that it used to be a house and, unfortunately, not much has been done to hide this fact. It could definitely use a remodeling. However, the food is outstanding. The mango lassis are always the perfect amount of sweet and tart. The samosas never get too dry inside, the filling always has the consistency of mashed potatoes and sticks to the crust when you bit it. The naan is always BIG (a problem Ive run into at other restaurants) and easily distinguishable from other flavors, since they fill them to the brim with whatever you ordered. The entrees come with buttery, fragrant rice and you never feel stiffed; theres plenty of sauce for dipping, but you also get lots of meat (or cheese or vegetables, depending on what you ordered). The korma is their specialty- spicy and creamy, although I would like more raisins. If there is one thing I will say, no matter what you order, it seems to have cream added to it. I cant think of anything Ive gotten that didnt have a rich consistency and slightly creamy taste. Believe me, Im not complaining. Desserts leave something to be desired, but the food is so plentiful, I never have room for it anyways. Heres the best review I can give: I moved to Washington DC about a year ago. Since then, I have eaten at every Indian restaurant I can find (and even some mixed South Asian eateries, in desperation). NO ONE has food like Kashmir. Really. I have visited every Indian restaurant on the Washingtonians top 100, nothing can compare to Kashmir. I miss it desperately and am actually thinking of making up an excuse to come to Louisville just so that I can order some Shahi Paneer Korma and stop these cravings. Yum, Yum, Yum!

After a movie, my partner and I decided to try out this restaurant nearby, having read some of the reviews online touting it as a great Indian restaurant. From the moment we walked in, I didnt have a good feeling about it. It was obviously run on a budget, from the thrift store-decorations to the stained tablecloths that looked like they hadnt been washed in weeks. Still, Ive been in many restaurants like that, and know that often times they can be some of the best kept secrets in town. Kashmir, however, is being kept secret for a reason. The "hostess" was timid and quiet, and seemed apathetic about having to serve us. She spoke in hushed tones and didnt seem eager to help us. Still, a bad server has never stopped us from eating good food, so we pressed on. Sadly, the food was an even further letdown. Nothing spectacular. We had a couple of the dishes recommended on various user reviews, and werent impressed. To be fair, the chicken curry was delicious, but that was the only saving grace on an otherwise bland meal. Ready to cut our losses, we handed over our Highlands VIP card and asked for the check. This card has an array of members around the area that offer special discounts to cardholders. The website said that Kashmir offered 20% off our ticket Monday through Thursdays, but EVERYONE that worked there swore they had never seen the card before, and that if we wanted the discount, wed have to come back and talk to the manager--who was, of course, not there. Weve NEVER had a problem with the card at any other restaurant, so we were pretty upset that this was going on. Nevertheless, we paid our bill, left our tip, and got out of there as quickly as possible. Needless to say, we wont be going back. I urge anyone interested in some fine Indian cuisine to go elsewhere. And if you manage to find a good spot, be sure to let us know, because Kashmir just wont cut it for us.

It has been a few years since I ate at this restaurant and I think it has really gone downhill. The atmosphere is dismal; the entrance is unimpressive and the staff are dour and sourfaced. After we were seated our server was impatient with us because we didnt know what we wanted right away; then after we placed our order he never once returned to our table. Other staff members brought us our food, refilled our water glasses and even brought us our check. The food was tasty, but the chicken curry was lacking... as in there was very little chicken. We had told the server that we were going to look at the wine list but we never had an opportunity to order any because he didnt come back (despite my attempts to gain his attention.) There is no baby changing station anywhere so I had to leave my 6-month old sitting in a dirty diaper until we could get the check, pay and leave. When we did get the check I discovered a $5 charge added after tax. I finally flagged down the server to ask what the charge was for and he told me that it was his tip. The nerve! He didnt deserve a 10% tip much less the 20% that the $5 represented. I have to wonder how many people have paid the "suggested tip" without paying attention to it and then tipped after paying as is the usual practice. It was such a disappointing visit that I regret returning.
