FRUSTRATED...!!! I have been a customer for over 8 years, able to see their business growth, unfortunately the quality of their food in occasions very poor, including short handed personnel all the time, couple servers, 1 chef to attend customers its becoming an issue. For the last year or so regardless the hour or date it takes longer than usual to get your food served in your table. In occasions food was served cold or not hot enough including lack of ingredients. With 2 servers running back and forth to assist customers the best they can, literately you cant ask for anything else, they are to busy helping other customers they cant even look up to see if you need anything else, you must wait for an opportunity before they can help you again. If the owner (Manager) whoever he is, is not there preparing our Sushi, our food will be most likely served poorly, lack of presentation and most of all, lack of ingredients. Yesterday Tuesday 09th, we were there 6:30 PM to celebrate my wifes B-day, 8 of us waited about 10-15 minutes to be seated normal for a group that size, waited another 10-15 minutes to have some one to take our order. the server offered an apology for the wait and apology was accepted but we were told that Sushi orders will take 30 minutes if not longer, to many sushi orders for one chef. If I would known as soon as we arrived prior asking for a table, things could go different and may be willing to wait as long was needed but we were hungry and we didnt have plans to wait that long. *****Last time we waited over 1 1/2 hour prior getting food in our table***** We were force to leave, the server very politely excused her self but she could tell us that when we first arrived before making us all upset. It takes time to make a customer, minutes to loose one..!! I hope next time, If I go back will be a better experience..!!

With a new owner and a new menu, this is the best sushi place in Utah! Way better than Happy Sumo. The owner is from Korea and spent more than 10 years learning how to make sushi in Japan from the best. He is constantly looking to create new rolls, and jsut rolled out with a new menu! Our recommendations: 1) Vegas Roll (Thick piece of raw salmon, cream cheese, and asparagus; tempura fried on the outside) 2) White Roll (tuna in the middle with cucumbers and white cream sauce on top) 3) Yamato Roll (Tuna in the middle, tuna, salmon, and avocados draped on top) 4) Dragon Roll (California roll gone wild!) 5) Yam Roll (Surprisingly tasted roll with rams in teh middle and a sweet sauce; great for those who are afraid of raw fish) The sushi is made with a thin layer of rice and thick pieces of fish. I hate going to sushi restaurants and all they give you is rice with a little fish. That is not the case at Yamato. You get to tast the fresh fish with every bit and at a fair price. The Korean BBQ and Japanese dishes are flavorful and kick butt as well. Check it out! You wont leave disappointed!

Im not sure what to think. Our family has been to Yamato many times. Food is great, price is fair, and atmosphere is unique. My father and I went to Yamato last evening to eat. We arrived 25 minutes before they closed, and asked for a seat. The greeter refused to seat us. We told her we would eat quickly, and kindly tried to accommodate her concerns in every way (which we shouldnt have to do as reasonable customers), but she said, "I can make takeout for you." She was either ignorant of our efforts to resolve her concerns, or knew exactly what she was doing and refused to serve us despite our efforts. I can understand her reluctance if we burst in 5 minutes before closing when the entire place was shut down. However, we were well within limits, there were plenty of staff, and the sign said "open." Will we go again? Maybe, but the lack of consideration was pathetic. My father and I walked out very disappointed, proclaiming to the lady, "If you arent going to serve people, turn off your open sign." The food may be great, but we cant eat it if you refuse to serve us.

A few guys at work get Japanese food once a week, and told me this was their favorite spot, so I tagged along. One of my co-workers lived in Japan for two years, so I trust his judgment. I was not disappointed. I got a bento box with beef teriyaki and tempura shrimp. Both were excellent, and the portions were great for the price. We also got 3 sushi rolls. Now Im not the biggest sushi fan, but I dont mind it every once in a while. The sushi was pretty good, but take that with a grain of salt as I dont have a discerning sushi tongue as others seem to. The other 3 in my party seemed to really like it. I also have to comment on the ambience. Yamato is not much to look at from the outside, but step through the front doors and youll feel transported to another country. Its beautiful, peaceful, and clean. I will definitely be taking my family there in the future.

Like other reviews mention, we had very slooooow service. We were seated quickly and got water, but then it was 10 minutes to order, about 30 minutes for food to come, and 5-10 minutes of trying to catch the waitresss attention to get our check. We tried the Yamato Sushi roll which was an excellent choice. A little expensive but very good flavors. Then we had the Pork Cutlet (Tonkatsu) and had enough to take home for leftovers. Do they really think 1 person can eat 2 pork cutlets with a pile of sticky rice? Maybe if we hadnt had sushi as well I could have finished the pork. But the pork was a little dry so Im glad we had the sauce. If you have time to wait for slow service but want excellent food, give this place a try. Youve probably whizzed by it several times as you pass by the Orem mall nearby.

This place is really good. The service is fast and the prices are reasonable for what you get. I recommend trying something other than chicken, because its not the highest quality Ive ever had, but I also wouldnt discourage someone from getting the teriyaki chicken. The rice holds its form which is great when eating with chopsticks. Other places, the "sticky" rice falls apart. I also love the location. Its not like its the nicest part of Orem, but the fact that it is right next to Asa Ramen is great. When I need Japanese food, I NEED IT! And if Yamato is too full, I can go to Asa or visa versa. If youve had a bad experience here, Id say you should give it a second shot and see if you just chose the wrong meal. いただきます!^_^

Let me just say that I LOVE Yamato. Not only is the food superb every time (one time I came in for dinner after having nothing but a Dr. Pepper all day and it literally left me weeping with how good it taste), but the staff is excellent and very professional. The restaurant has a very real Japanese feel, and tastes just like the food I had in Japan when I went there. It is also very affordable for the quality. Not ONLY that, but the staff sometimes lets me speak with them in my broken Japanese. What more can I say? Yamato is good enough that sometimes I come in on an afternoon by myself and just enjoy the atmosphere. I love this place. My favorite dishes: Beef Udon, Agedashi Tofu, and the Katsu Donburi.
