Im not quite sure where to start. Before tonights visit, I absolutely LOVED Sumos. Tonight we went to celebrate our moms birthday... normally we go to Sumos just because. There have been points since they opened where I was eating there almost weekly. Id say the longest Ive gone without eating Sumos is 60 days. Again, this has been one of my favorite restaurants for ages. Tonights visit: We made reservations at 5:45pm (which I never bother doing but since we were actually celebrating something I wanted to ensure we had a table). The waiter was very friendly and pleasant;however, refills were hard to come by. COMPLETELY forgivable, they were busy on a Saturday evening. The chef: this is when things took a troubling turn for the worse. I had ordered the Chateau Brianne, a temperamental piece of meat that truly has to be attended to properly. The rest of my family all ordered various cuts of meat, cooked rare (except my nephew and I requested medium). The chef argued with my sister and I telling us my 3 year old nephews meat should be prepared medium well, we said no, he prefers medium/medium rare. He argued with us for a few minutes. Next thing I knew I had meat on my plate (it looked pretty rare but I can tolerate rare to medium meat) I took a few bites and then looked around. My mom (the birthday girl) had no steak and then I looked at the grill (assuming hers would be on there) lo and behold it was my Chateau! Burning. I called that to the chefs attention. His remedy was to try and take the meat off my plate *that I had been eating* and give it to my mom. She made it very clear that was unacceptable. The chef walks away. Mom and I are just sitting there. He comes back with a bowl full of disgusting looking chopped up raw meat. He doesnt say a word, grabs my plate and throws the meat I was eating on the grill (that has to be some sort of health code violation) ... meanwhile my Chateau is smoking and burnt. He tosses the burned steak on my plate, throws away the meat I was eating, cleans the table and walks away. Guess who still had no food? Mom. She called him back over and said "wheres my steak?" He again, didnt say a word but slopped the bowl of cut up steak onto the clean (turned off) grill, no butter no oil just a tiny bit of salt and pepper. He flipped the steak twice tossed it on her plate and walked away. The meat was no where near rare. It was raw with a tiny hint of brown on each side. He didnt bother cleaning the grill again when he left. Ive never had a ruder person cooking my food at a Japanese restaurant. We were offered nothing but disgusting food to take home and feed to our dogs. Although Im still debating if Ill even feed it to the dog, I love her too much to put her through the suffering of eating sumos. My family and I will NOT BE returning. I will make sure to advise friends to stay clear as well. Its not worth it, youll be disappointed about the time and money you waste at this place. I had started my affair with Sumos since it is most convenient for me living out in Leon Springs. Im never taking convenience into consideration again. Ill drive further to be a satisfied customer. Other good Japanese steak houses in SA: Tokyo Steak House (a little run down but yummy, their house salad dressing is to die for). Shogun (again pretty run down but pretty good).

I had to think long and hard about what to write here. My family and I, 5 of us total, made reservations for Thursday, February 2nd at 7:15pm. We rushed to get to the restaurant on time so that we wouldnt miss it, as it was our 6 year-olds birthday and we wanted it to be special. When we first got there at a little before 7pm, we checked in with the hostess and she told us that it would be a few minutes before we were seated. Ok, well, Ive never had issues with reservations before, but it was fairly busy at the few tables near the door. After about 20 minutes, my husband got me a beer from the bar. The bartender was not exceptional, but it was fine. After about 45 minutes and watching some large parties get seated, we decided to move to the bar and have the kids try some sushi. The only good thing about this experience was the sushi chef. He was so sweet to our kids and kept them fed for another 30 to 45 minutes. We had asked the hostess what was going on during our stay at the bar and she said that they had some larger parties than expected and only 4 chefs. Ok. Well, we were finally seated around 9pm, yes, an hour and 45 minutes after our reservation and then the wait for the server began. He was a sweet enough guy, but we waited a good 20 minutes before he showed up to the table. After he comes and takes our order, we sit across from a table that is joking with their chef and having food flipped into their mouths, etc. and we are just starving. It was so bad that we actually applauded the salad and soup coming out. Then the wait was on again for the chef and we didnt see our server for a good 30 to 45 minutes. This is not an exaggeration folks, it was almost 3 hours from when we walked in until we started eating actual food. There were two moms and their two daughters at our table and we enjoyed conversation with them, but had we not promised our three kids the show, btw, 9, 6, and 3 years old, and we hadnt had a gift certificate, we would have left long before. The chef was ok, but he didnt do anything like we had seen other chefs doing and he seemed bored, tired, and ready to leave. Our server had even joked at one point that they lost our dinner ticket. Im not sure it was a joke. At the very end, we told our server how long we had been there and had to wait to even be seated and he said that he couldnt believe it because they had been slow that night. Wtf? He ended up going to the back and bringing us $10 in gift cards to come back. He also gave them to the ladies at our table. We were the last ones out of the restaurant at nearly 11pm and actually passed the staff eating their dinner at another table. I am willing to guess that they started eating before we did. Oh, and to add insult to injury, there was a mandatory 18% gratuity, so even with our $25 gift certificate, by the time we added the beer, a plate of sushi, and the meal, we were in about $150. It was not worth it and we wont be back. I hope that they can get their act together.
