Tasty, Easy to Overlook Restaurant in the Montrose Neighborhood. We went for lunch--around 1 p.m. The restaurant was not crowded and the service was very friendly. We were blown away by the salsa. I think its not overstating it that this is the best salsa I have had in Houston. Its spicy with a hint of roasted tomatoes and corn and just enough cilantro. I was a little let down by the entrees only because the salsa built me up so much. That isnt to say the entrees were bad, just average. Between the two of us, we had the green, red, mole, and spinach enchiladas. The mole was the clear winner--rich, chocolatey, spicy; its one of the best mole sauces Ive tasted. The green and red were tasty but not anything special. The spinach enchiladas were unremarkable, and the green sauce was very under seasoned. We didnt try the margaritas, but clearly the reviews here suggest we should go back for them. Im intrigued to try more of the menu and will be back.

This place is very expensive and not that good for the price. There are flies and my set of silverware was dirty!!. The salsa is ok but cold, chips are chewy, the enchiladas stink! And what i mean by that is they actually smell terrible! They do not even provide you with napkins! You gotta keep asking the weiters to bring some. I dined alone and my bill was over 25 dollars. What surprises me is that this restaurant has decent reviews, the reality is that the restaurant looks too dirty and there is absolutely no atmosphere in there! The place is always empty, not such a good idea to bring friends for a good time, the food is terrible and very overpriced. i wont be coming back thats for sure, there are many delicious restaurants in the montrose area to be wasting money on a dumphole like el paraiso.

This is a good restaurant. I especially enjoy the fact that it is in a still standing older house. The menu is extensive, featuring classic dishes from Tex-Mex and also from Mexico. I had come as part of my continuing research to locate restaurants in Houston that make a mole Poblano on premises instead of opening up a jar. I confirmed same and, though I did not have the mole enchiladas, that is, "tortillas enmoladas" as they would correctly be named, I will do so in the near future. Today, I opted for the vegetarian platter #5 which consists of an avocado stuffed hard taco, a cheese chalupa, rice, beans and a white cheese entomatada, that is, a tortilla rolled and covered with a tomato sauce. It was very good and I would order it again.

First visit here. Place was very clean, seat yourself. Plenty of windows for natural light. Quick friendly waiters. I ordered coffee(was ok not very strong) homemade tamales were very delicious and did taste homemade, charo beans were good. Salsa medium spicy with higher quality of chips than your normal thin tortillas. Price is a little higher than your normal mom and pop Mexican restaurant but it is in Montrose so it makes sense for the location. no loud music, clientele mostly whites.

Service with a smile and then a crooked total. Ordered 3 margaritas at 6.50. Then ordered carna asada and asked to make it for 2 - total 26.00 So the carna asada for 1 is 10.50 but for 2 is 26.00. With chips we got enough food for two so really a half ass effort to begin with. 46 before tip, it just felt like I was taken. Will not be going back, and strongly recommend not going here. If you do, double and triple check your bill. The food was ok -- not ok for the price.

Ive been going to El Paraiso for more than 30 years. Its like home away from home for me. Delicious and authentic food served by truly friendly people in a quaint old home in Montrose. Im a native Houstonian and I think El Paraiso has the best salsa in town. Carne asada is always delicious, as are the frijoles a la charra with fresh pico de gallo. Enchiladas en mole are great. Margaritas rock as well. Do yourself a favor and check out this overlooked Houston institution!

Tried this place last night, the food was great! It is the first place Ive found in Houston with truly delicious and authentic enchiladas. My boyfriend had the Tacos al Carbon which were also fantastic. Margaritas were a huge plus as well. Its easy to overlook, as the restaurant looks more like a run-down house from the outside, but it was surprisingly delicious food and I will definitely be going back many more times.

When not in the mode for something as heavy as El Real, this is a great spot. Dont expect anything fancy. I would almost call this place a hole in the wall, but it is pretty big inside. Great enchiladas, great prices, and fast service make this a favorite lunch spot of mine. Everything that I have tried I have liked. It isnt fancy by any stretch, but it is very good and well priced.

Probably my favorite chilaquiles rojos in town. When I tasted the chilaquiles, I felt home and I wanted to hug the cook haha. I also tried the Chile relleno and it was prepared exactly how it should be, something that rarely happens in Mexican restaurants in the US. The only problem is that they dont offer a kids menu for breakfast so its hard to find something for my son.

This place sounded good by the reviews, this is the first review Ive ever written because this restaurants reviews have never been so wrong. Dont come in here for lunch because our food was flavorless and tasted like it had been out for a while, there is literally nothing special about this place. Go to the other Mexican restaurant down the street.

El Paraiso is my local go-to Mexican restaurant when I get the biweekly enchilada cravings. It took me a couple tries when moving to the River Oaks/Montrose area to find a Mexican restaurant that wasnt overly expensive and odd tasting. I also like its homey feel, and the service is very polite and unobtrusive while still being great.

This is our favorite spot to have Margaritas after a long week. Once a month a few of the girls from the family get together to eat and have a couple drinks. It is very clean and staff is kind. Parking is never a problem when we go and the neighborhood is comfortable.

Very friendly staff. I usually go for lunch. When I sit down, my regular waitress is already setting my drink and chips down, (with my warmed salsa, as well). She is very sweet and always knows exactly what I want. Delicious food and excellent service.

Very authentic Mexican food....much better than down the street...been eating there for years and always consistent. Best hot sauce in town! Good margaritas. My favorite dish is the supreme burittos with chicken fajita!

Decent restaurant, nothing to wild. The food was decent and the restaurant itself is in an old house but still has some charm. I enjoyed myself, but I typically like more lively environments.

I gave it 2 stars for having great chips otherwise it would have been 1 star (which is The lowest) The rest of the food is horrible. Over priced nexcucsn food and not clean.
