Merida is a Houston institution. I know I have been going there since the 70s. It was at one time the only place one could find several authentic Yucatecan dishes. And it houses one of the coolest murals in Houston of a mystical Mayan city. Today we enjoyed our very acceptable breakfasts. I opted for something simpler. And that would be a simple bowl of fideo. Sometimes that rib sticking pasta, a short vermicelli as it were, is all I want. The horchata that accompanied it was excellent. And my dining partners thought the coffee to be very good and also complimented the frijoles negros.

This used to be my favorite restaurant for 19 years. This year that is no longer true. My male server tried to say the Salbutes I ordered are the same thing as another dish. Yet Salbutes dont have beans stuffed inside. And didnt want to do anything about it until I told him to just take it away. Mind you, it was Mothers day and I didnt want an issue. Clearly he isnt as familiar with the menu unlike myself. Also I noticed the recipe has changed or the cooks. Its just not as tasty as it used to be. Luckily I learned to make them at home and they are better than theirs.

Its been over 15 years since I ate here, but it was one of my favorite restaurants for traditional Mexican (Yucatan style) in Houston. There was a steak on the menu that, when served, looked like a thin piece of shoe leather, but was the most tender and tasty beef I have eaten. It became my staple. The restaurant is convenient to downtown and across the street from Ninfas, but I would eat at Merida over Ninfas any time. Dont get me wrong, Ninfas is delicious, but Merida is a deliciously different food - a good change from Tex-Mex.

This is a homey restaurant, in an area of Houston which is being rebranded as a tourist area. The exterior looks like a plain house, but the interior is clean, neat, and nicely decorated. The staff are friendly. I ordered the lunch special Chili Relleno (Beef), which came with a big salad, yellow rice, and a delicious bowl of pork & bean soup. Every item had exceptional flavor, and the chips & salsa were far above the norm. Highly recommended! RJT

Sweet Jesus their delicious refried beans! Wow. Im sure they are full of lard and things which on their own are unappealing but whatever love they use to create their refried beans is amazing! Not sure if they are the same use they use in their bean and cheese breakfast tacos (if so, I am sure they would be a favorite) but regardless, go here for dinner, order the fajitas, make sure to get refried beans. Youre welcome.

Ive been here only once for breakfast, the salsa for the chips tasted like came from a bottle. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and they just poured more salsa (same as they use for the chips) in the eggs and thats it. But my girl had the machacado and was really good. The hot sauce was not hot at all but with good taste, coffee was also good. About the service it was good, the manager came a couple times to our table.

The good was ok. Our waitress may have woken up on the wrong side of the bed. No smile, looked upset. She made us feel like we were burdening her. I placed my empty glass on the edge of the table and she never offered me a refill. She sooner offered me a to go box than refill my drink. I really wasnt done eating, but that prompted me to call it. Wont be back.

service was good. had breakfast there yesterday. the beans tasted like they were straight from the can. the egg & chorizo was just that. no onions, no bell peppers, no tomatoes. the tortillas were store bought. the coffee so-so. the parking is off the street. theres a couple of breakfast taco places up the street. stick to them.

Big fat "meh". How can you name your place Merida and not serve habanero peppers? How can you serve cochinita pibil and expect people not to ask for habanero peppers. I got an "El Yucateco" bottle instead. Muh-fuggah for what? The juiciest item on my plate was the rabano that decorated the beans (which says a lot about the cochinita).

Absolutely legit taco shop in a strip mall. They even have pickled potatoes on the salsa bar. Its like I called ahead and said "Hey, can you make sure I love you? Can you just take one small extra step?" And they said "Oh, we can. Were putting pickled potatoes out."

Their breakfast deserves 5 stars! Very authentic and traditional, except for the chilaquiles that are really migas. From the rest of the menu I would order only the Yucatan specialties, I love them all. The rest of the food is just OK.

Pitifull third class Tex mex trying to compete with the best across the street Ninfas...you can get better queso on the top of your hot dog at a baseball game....dont waste your money! The owner brags he is from Colombia not Mexico...

Very authentic Mexican dishes. Home cooking friendly atmosphere. Large portions. You cant go wrong if youre looking for a taste of home (assuming home is rural Mexico).

We were served dry frijoles refritos that had the presentation of left over. Kitchen worker and servers should know if food they are serving are presentable or not.

Great service and reasonable prices. They are right across the street from the over-priced El Tiempo and Ninfas restaurants, so definitely eat there instead.
